Is Mirach a binary star?

2.06) is sometimes mentioned as the brightest star in the constellation, but as the brightness of Mirach varies from magnitude 2.01 to 2.10 and the value cited for Alpheratz is the combined apparent magnitude of the Alpha Andromedae binary star system, both stars have a claim to the title of Andromeda's brightest star.

Why is Arcturus so bright?

Arcturus is roughly 25 times greater in diameter than our sun. Because of its larger size, in visible light Arcturus radiates more than 100 times the light of our sun. If you consider infrared and other forms of radiant energy, Arcturus is about 200 times more powerful than the sun.

What is the brightest star in Andromeda?

Andromeda, in astronomy, constellation of the northern sky at about one hour right ascension and 40° north declination. The brightest star, Alpheratz (from the Arabic for “horse's navel”; the star was once part of the constellation Pegasus), has a magnitude of 2.1.

What is the story behind Arcturus?

The ancient Greeks named the star Arcturus – which translates to “bear guardian.” The Greeks chose to name this star as such because they saw Arcturus as the guardian of both Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, who are constellations closely positioned near the constellation of Boötes, where Arcturus is located.

Where is Arcturus tonight?

Tonight, at mid-northern latitudes, look for the brilliant star Arcturus to climb over your eastern horizon around 9 to 10 p.m. local time. That's the approximate time on your clock, regardless of your longitude. South of the equator, this northerly star rises considerably later in the evening.

How many light years away is Arcturus from Earth?

Years later, measurements refined the distance to Arcturus as 37 light-years away from Earth. So, the light that was used at the Chicago's World Fair actually began its journey to Earth in 1896, not in 1893.

When can you see Arcturus?

What color is Almach?

The primary component, formally named Almach (Gamma¹ Andromedae), has the stellar classification K3IIb, indicating a bright giant star appearing orange in colour. The star has a radius 80 times that of the Sun. With a surface temperature of 4,500 K, it is 2,000 times more luminous than the Sun.

What is the temperature of Mu Andromedae?

The star is radiating about 21 times the luminosity of the Sun from its outer envelope at an effective temperature of 7,959 K, giving it the characteristic white glow of an A-type star. It is estimated to be about 600 million years old, with a relatively high projected rotational velocity of 75 km/s.

What constellation is Almach in?

Almach is one of the brightest stars of the constellation Andromeda, the princess.
