The pharynx, commonly called the throat, is a passageway that extends from the base of the skull to the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. It serves both the respiratory and digestive systems by receiving air from the nasal cavity and air, food, and water from the oral cavity.

What are the three parts of the pharynx and their functions?

These parts include the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. The nasopharynx is the most superior, or uppermost, part of the pharynx that works with the nasal cavity during breathing. It provides a passageway for air moving from the nose.

Which organs are located in the pharynx?

pharynx, (Greek: “throat”) cone-shaped passageway leading from the oral and nasal cavities in the head to the esophagus and larynx. The pharynx chamber serves both respiratory and digestive functions.

What gland is in the pharynx?

Beneath the mucous membrane are found racemose mucous glands (Pharyngeal glands); they are especially numerous at the upper part of the pharynx around the orifices of the auditory tubes.

What Cartilage is found in the pharynx?

The epiglottis is an elastic cartilaginous leaf-shaped flap covering the opening of the larynx. It is attached to the internal surface of the thyroid cartilage and projects over the pharynx, allowing the passage of air into the larynx, trachea, and lungs.

The Pharynx

Which region of the pharynx contains the tonsils?

The oropharynx contains two distinct sets of tonsils, the palatine and lingual tonsils. A palatine tonsil is one of a pair of structures located laterally in the oropharynx in the area of the fauces. The lingual tonsil is located at the base of the tongue.

What are the 3 parts of the pharynx?

The throat (pharynx) is a muscular tube that runs from the back of your nose down into your neck. It contains three sections: the nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharynx, which is also called the hypopharynx.

What are the lymph nodes of the pharynx?

The lymph nodes in the neck are called cervical lymph nodes. There are many cervical lymph nodes, including some around the pharynx. The cervical lymph nodes are grouped into different groups (called levels) depending on their location in the neck. There are 6 levels of cervical lymph nodes on each side of the neck.

Where is your larynx and pharynx?

The throat (pharynx and larynx) is a ring-like muscular tube that acts as the passageway for air, food and liquid. It is located behind the nose and mouth and connects the mouth (oral cavity) and nose to the breathing passages (trachea [windpipe] and lungs) and the esophagus (eating tube).

What is pharynx in digestive system?

Also called the throat, the pharynx is the portion of the digestive tract that receives the food from your mouth. Branching off the pharynx is the esophagus, which carries food to the stomach, and the trachea or windpipe, which carries air to the lungs.

Where is the posterior pharynx?

The pharynx is located posteriorly to the nasal and oral cavities and functions as a cavity through which food and air pass to the esophagus and larynx, respectively.

Where is the larynx located?

Your larynx is in your neck, above your windpipe (trachea). It is also called the voicebox. The larynx is also called the voicebox. It is in the neck, above the windpipe (trachea) and in front of the gullet (oesophagus).

What are the 3 parts of the pharynx quizlet?

What three regions is the Pharynx or throat divided into? Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, Laryngopharynx.

What is located in the pharynx that traps large airborne particles?

The mucous membrane that lines the trachea is ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium similar to that in the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Goblet cells produce mucus that traps airborne particles and microorganisms, and the cilia propel the mucus upward, where it is either swallowed or expelled.

Is the pharynx part of the respiratory system?

The pharynx is part of the digestive system as well as the respiratory system because it carries both food and air.

How many openings are in the pharynx?

The pharyngeal cavity has seven (7) openings which are: 1-The paired posterior nose –rostrodorsally which connect nasopharynx with nasal cavity. 2-The paired eustachian tube –dorsolaterally, opening of the auditory tubes, connect the nasopharyngeal with auditory tubes and then middle ear.

Is the pharynx in the neck?

The pharynx is a conductive structure located in the midline of the neck. It is the main structure, in addition to the oral cavity, shared by two organ systems, i.e., the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and the respiratory system.

Which lymph node drains the pharynx?

The upper portion of the pharynx drains directly to the upper cervical lymph nodes along the internal jugular chain. The oropharynx and tonsil drain through the peripharyngeal space to the midjugular region, particularly to the jugulodigastric nodes.

Which region of the pharynx contains the tonsils quizlet?

The palatine tonsils are found in the part of the pharynx that is shared with the oral cavity and is known as the oropharynx. Which of the following is NOT a function of the nasal conchae? While the nasal conchae are used for routing air, they are not involved in routing food.

Which part of the pharynx contains openings for the right and left auditory tubes?

Unlike the other two portions of the pharynx, the nasopharynx remains open all the time. On each lateral wall is the pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian (auditory) tube. The nasopharynx functions as an airway in the respiratory system. Also contained within the nasopharynx are the adenoids, or pharyngeal tonsils.

What are the seven openings found in the pharynx?

Seven cavities communicate with it, viz., the two nasal cavities, the two tympanic cavities, the mouth, the larynx, and the esophagus. The cavity of the pharynx may be subdivided from above downward into three parts: nasal, oral, and laryngeal (Fig. 994).

What separates pharynx from larynx?

The pharynx extends from the caudal end of the nasal cavity/oral cavity to the larynx and is divided by the soft palate to form the nasopharynx dorsally and the oropharynx ventrally. Starting at the base of the epiglottis and extending caudad to the arch of the cricoid cartilage is the laryngopharynx.

What is the gross anatomy of the pharynx?

The pharynx is a funnel-shaped, fibromuscular tube that extends from the base of the skull to the cricoid cartilage, where the pharynx continues as the esophagus. The pharynx is commonly called the throat and serves as a common pathway for food and air.
