A “high stepping” type of gait in which the leg is lifted high, the foot drops (appearing floppy), and the toes points downward, scraping the ground, when walking. Peroneal muscle atrophy or peroneal nerve injury, as with a spinal problem (such as spinal stenosis or herniated disc), can cause this type of gait.

What causes a stepping gait?

Most people assume an issue with the foot causes this condition, but it's actually caused by an underlying condition or injury to the spine. Common causes of drop foot and steppage gait include: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Multiple sclerosis (MS)

How do you treat high steppage gait?

Treatment for a high steppage gait pattern involves focusing on the anterior tibialis muscle. Specific ankle exercises can help strengthen your anterior tibialis, and stretches for your calf can help ensure that your ankle range of motion (ROM) is well maintained.

What is Hemiparetic gait?

The most common pattern of walking impairment poststroke is hemiparetic gait, which is characterized by asymmetry associated with an extensor synergy pattern of hip extension and adduction, knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion and inversion.

Is foot drop serious?

Is peroneal nerve damage painful?

Mild peroneal nerve injuries can cause numbness, tingling, pain and weakness. More severe injuries can be characterized by a foot drop, a distinctive way of walking that results from being unable to bend or flex the foot upward at the ankle.

What is high gait?

A “high stepping” type of gait in which the leg is lifted high, the foot drops (appearing floppy), and the toes points downward, scraping the ground, when walking.

How many types of gait are there?

What muscles are affected by foot drop?

Definitions: When there is paralysis of the dorsal extensor muscles of the foot and the toes (tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, and extensor hallucis longus), which are innervated by the deep peroneal nerve, foot drop occurs.

What is abnormal gait?

What is Trendelenburg gait?

Trendelenburg gait is an abnormal gait resulting from a defective hip abductor mechanism. The primary musculature involved is the gluteal musculature, including the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles. The weakness of these muscles causes drooping of the pelvis to the contralateral side while walking.
