A jibe (US) or gybe (Britain) is a sailing maneuver whereby a sailing vessel reaching downwind turns its stern through the wind, which then exerts its force from the opposite side of the vessel. For square-rigged ships, this maneuver is called wearing ship.

What is the difference between tacking and gybing?

What is the difference between a tacking and a jibing? Tacking is how you head upwind, pointing as high into the wind as possible, to keep the sails full. A jibe is conducted when you are heading downwind.

What do you say when gybing?

When the crew has readied (prepared) the sheets the crew will yell, “Ready”. The helmsman will then say, “Gybe Ho” or “Gybing” to notify the crew that he has started to make the turn down through the wind.

What is a GYBE and tack?

If the turn changes the wind from one side of the boat to the other, you will have tacked or jibed. It will be a TACK (also called coming about) if you turn the bow of the boat through the eye of the wind, and it will be a JIBE if you turn the stern through the eye of the wind.

Can a boat tack faster than the wind?

True wind always pushes a boat. If a boat sails absolutely perpendicular to true wind, so the sail is flat to the wind and being pushed from behind, then the boat can only go as fast as the wind—no faster. ... But when the boat travels at an angle to the true wind, the apparent wind suddenly generates a powerful force.

How do you tack a genoa?

Run a light line from it forward to a block at the bow, and aft to the cockpit. During the tack, once the sheet's released, pull the line to get the bulk of the sail forward of the mast, once the sail's 'blown through' release it (making sure it can run free) and sheet the sail in as normal.

How do you gybe safely?

1. The jib is the clue to a successful jibe.
2. Once the jib comes across on its own, trim the new jib sheet and hold a steady course while bringing the mainsail across by hand.
3. Use a slow turn.
4. Keep control of the mainsail so the boom will not fly across. ...
5. Ease the main quickly.

What does hard a'lee mean?

hard-a-lee. The situation of the tiller when it brings the rudder hard over to windward. Strictly speaking, it only relates to a tiller which extends forward from the rudder-head; now many extend aft, in which case the order remains the same, but the tiller and rudder are both brought over to windward.

What is a port gybe?

In simple terms, when you 'gybe' a boat you are doing the same as you did when you tacked. In other words, you are changing the side of the boat that is presented to the wind. But instead of turning the front (or bow) of the boat through the wind, you are turning the back (or stern) of the boat through the wind.

What is it called when a sailboat leans?

Heeling: This is the term for when a sailboat leans over in the water, pushed by the wind. Tack: This term has two meanings, both of them important. To tack is to change direction by turning the bow of the boat through the wind. Your tack is also the course you are on relative to the wind.

What is it called when you sail into the wind?

Tacking is a sailing maneuver by which a sailing vessel, whose desired course is into the wind, turns its bow toward and through the wind so that the direction from which the wind blows changes from one side of the boat to the other, allowing progress in the desired direction.

What is a chicken gybe?

The safe manoeuvre is called the chicken gybe. The chicken gybe replaces the conventional gybe in high winds, particularly if you have a rookie crew. It's mostly done when the skipper is uncomfortable about the conditions for the gybe for some reason, and most likely this will occur if the winds are high.

What is the number one way sailors are injured when gybing?

More sailors are knocked overboard by gybes than anything else on a sailboat. High stresses on the rigging and sails occur when the mainsail snaps into its new position across the boat. Rigging or the sail may be damaged, including breaking a shroud or stay-which could even cause a dismasting.

What's the difference between a jib and a genoa?

Jibs are typically 100% to 115% LP and are generally used in areas with heavier winds. ... Typically a jib will be no greater than 115% of the fore-triangle dimensions. A genoa is similar to a jib but is larger and reaches past the mast. It will typically overlap a mainsail to some extent.

Is a jib a staysail?

On a boat with two staysails the inner sail is called the staysail, and the outer (foremost) is called the jib. This combination of two staysails is called a cutter rig (or in North America a yankee pair) and a boat with one mast rigged with two staysails and a mainsail is called a cutter.

How do sailboats move against the wind?

But this reverse movement is possible because a moving boat's sail is shaped as an airfoil like the wing of a plane. ... On a sailboat, wind blowing against the boat at an angle inflates the sail, and it forms a similar foil shape, creating a difference in pressure that pushes the sail perpendicular to the wind direction.
