What is corium in histology?

The corium is a highly vascular nerve-rich tissue consisting of a dense matrix of connective tissue. ... Context 4. ... cells within the germinal (or basal cell) layer are in a constant state of proliferation and differentiation into keratinocytes or basal cells.

What is corium medical?

Corium is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company that is leading the development and commercialization of central nervous system (CNS) healthcare therapies that provide clinicians with important treatment options for patients, their families, and their caregivers.

Where is corium located?

This is a layer of the skin that is referred to as either the dermis or the corium, It is located under the skin in between the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissues, which is mainly connective tissue that is dense and irregular.

What is corium made of?

The Chernobyl corium is composed of the reactor uranium dioxide fuel, its zircaloy cladding, molten concrete, and decomposed and molten serpentinite packed around the reactor as its thermal insulation. Analysis has shown that the corium was heated to at most 2,255 °C, and remained above 1,660 °C for at least 4 days.

How many times has corium been made?

Corium has been created outside of the lab at least five times: Once at the Three Mile Island reactor in Pennsylvania in 1979, once in Chernobyl, and three separate times during the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant meltdown in Japan in 2011.

What is subcutaneous tissue?

Subcutaneous tissue is the deepest layer of your skin. It's made up mostly of fat cells and connective tissue. ... The subcutaneous layer acts as a layer of insulation to protect your internal organs and muscles from shock and changes in temperature. It also provides your body with an energy reserve.

What does Tegument mean?

Definitions of tegument. a natural protective body covering and site of the sense of touch. synonyms: cutis, skin.

What happens to epidermal cells as they undergo Keratinization?

Explain what happens to epidermal cells as they undergo keratinization? Keratinocytes thicken and develop many desmosomes and begin to harden. As a result, many layers of tough, tightly packed dead cells accumulate in the epidermis forming stratum corneum.

What do dead Keratinized cells form?

Hair is made of dead keratinized cells, and gets its color from melanin pigments. Nails, also made of dead keratinized cells, protect the extremities of our fingers and toes from mechanical damage. Sweat glands and sebaceous glands produce sweat and sebum, respectively.

Are collagen fibers found in the epidermis?

The dermis connects the epidermis to the hypodermis, and provides strength and elasticity due to the presence of collagen and elastin fibers. It has only two layers: the papillary layer with papillae that extend into the epidermis and the lower, reticular layer composed of loose connective tissue.

Why did Chernobyl explode?

The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the environment, with the deposition of radioactive materials in many parts of Europe.

How long until Chernobyl is safe?

“The amount of radiation you're exposed to is similar to on a long haul flight. Some scientists state the estimated time that has to be passed until it will be safe to be around Chernobyl us 20,000 years — but it's true only for the places near the radioactive remains.

How hot is elephant's foot?

Reaching estimated temperatures between 1,660°C and 2,600°C and releasing an estimated 4.5 billion curies the reactor rods began to crack and melt into a form of lava at the bottom of the reactor.

Where on the body can thick skin be found?

Thick skin is present on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. In addition to differing thicknesses, the skin also differs in what is present in the layers. For example, thick skin has no hair follicles or sebaceous glands, whereas thin skin does.

Is the medical name for the fat in subcutaneous tissue?

The fat layer of skin is located in the subcutaneous layer of tissue called the hypodermis.

How deep is the subcutaneous?

In the body's abdominal area, which often has more fat, the subcutaneous layer reaches up to 3 centimeters in depth. The thickness depends on someone's overall body fat composition. In other areas, such as the eyelids, the subcutaneous layer has no fat and may be as thin as 1 millimeter.

How do you stop corium?

The standard technique for dealing with corium is to try and cool it with water. However, this approach typically works too slowly, allowing the disaster to continue evolving and letting radioactive contaminants escape into the surrounding area.

What can corium be used for?

Corium liquids are therefore capable of traveling large distances within a reactor vessel during meltdown, independent of the amount of cladding incorporated into the molten fuel. Such high fluidity can be beneficial for spreading and cooling core melts within suitable core-catcher designs.

How hot is Fukushima?

Temperatures inside the reactors skyrocketed to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 Celsius). Fuel rods became molten puddles of uranium that chewed through the floors below. They left a radioactive heap of concrete, steel and melted debris.

Is Chernobyl core still burning?

The team estimates half of the reactor's original fuel is still locked up inside 305/2, so it's not great news that neutron levels have doubled in the past four years. Reactor 4 several months after the disaster.

How long until Fukushima is safe?

About 900 tons of melted nuclear fuel remain inside the three damaged reactors, and its removal is a daunting task that officials say will take 30-40 years.
