Complement component 3, often simply called C3, is a protein of the immune system. It plays a central role in the complement system and contributes to innate immunity. In humans it is encoded on chromosome 19 by a gene called C3.

What does a C3 complement test for?

Complement C3 is a blood test that measures the activity of a certain protein. This protein is part of the complement system. The complement system is a group of nearly 60 proteins that are in blood plasma or on the surface of some cells.

What does low C3 complement mean?

If only your C3 complement level is low and all other complement components are normal, it's usually because of an inherited component deficiency. This makes it more likely that you will develop certain autoimmune disorders. More often, you will have low levels of several complement components at once.

Why is C3 low in lupus?

Lupus patients usually have low C3 and C4 levels during disease flares because of activation of the complement system by immune complexes (ICs) [1].

What disease can cause a high complement level?

If your results show higher than normal amounts or increased activity of complement proteins, it may mean you have one of the following conditions: Certain types of cancer, such as leukemia or non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Ulcerative colitis, a condition in which the lining of the large intestine and rectum become inflamed.

Hypocomplementemia (Low Plasma Complement Level)

What is C3 and C4 blood test for?

C3 & C4 Blood Test measures the levels of Complement component 3 and Complement component 4 in the blood. The complement system comprises of more than 30 proteins in the blood, that play a significant role in the body's immune system.

What causes high ch50?

Increased levels of complement may indicate: Acute-phase immune response. Cancer. Ulcerative colitis.

What can lupus be mistaken for?

• Rosacea and other skin rashes. ...
• Dermatomyositis. ...
• Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease. ...

What are the 4 types of lupus?

When people talk about lupus, they may be referring to the most common form—systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, there are actually four kinds. Click or scroll to read more about each of them: SLE, cutaneous lupus, drug-induced lupus, and neonatal lupus.

Is C3 and C4 always low in lupus?

In certain diseases, both components are low. But in others, only 1 component is low. In lupus, both C3 and C4 levels are usually low. If your healthcare provider suspects lupus, you may have a number of other blood tests to see how your immune system is functioning.

What causes low C3 and C4 complement levels?

Both C3 and C4 levels are typically depressed in lupus while C3 alone is low in septicemia and infections caused by fungi or parasites such as malaria. If the deficiency is due to an underlying acute or chronic condition, complement levels will usually return to normal if the underlying condition can be resolved.

What does high C3 and C4 mean?

It seems that elevated C3 and C4 are likely to result of increased synthesis in the liver in response to cytokines e.g. IL-1β, IL-6 or tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which are increased in active CU and are known to control synthesis of the APR proteins [9].

What are normal C3 and C4 levels?

The University Reference Laboratories normal range for C3 is 80–178 mg/dl, for C4 is 12–42 mg/dl, for CRP is 0.0–3.0 mg/l, and for ESR is 0–14 mm/h for males under 50 years old, 0–19 mm/h for females under 50 years old, 0–19 for males between 50 and 80 years old, and 0–29 mm/h for females between 50 and 80 years old.

What is normal C3 level?

The normal range is 88 to 201 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) (0.88 to 2.01 g/L). Note: Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your provider about the meaning of your specific test results.

What is a normal CH50 level?

Adult reference range is 42 to 95 U/mL. A low CH50 suggests the possibility of a complement factor deficiency.

Can you have lupus with normal C3 and C4?

Low C3 and C4 levels, below 60 for C3 and 15 for C4 (in the usual American measure), occur in active lupus, especially in the setting of kidney disease or immune breakdown of blood cells (autoimmune hemolytic anemia, AIHA). Some types of lupus, such as brain disease, do not cause low complement levels.

Which is worse MS or lupus?

In general, lupus does more generalized damage to your body than MS, which primarily damages the nervous system.

Is lupus classified as a disability?

For Social Security's purposes, lupus qualifies as a disability when it meets these conditions: It involves two or more organs or body systems. It includes at least two major signs or symptoms, such as severe fatigue, fever, malaise, and involuntary weight loss.

Does lupus cause weight gain?

Weight changes — Lupus can sometimes cause weight loss or weight gain. Weight loss may be unintentional and due to decreased appetite or problems with the digestive system (see 'Digestive system' below). It can also be a side effect of some medications used to treat lupus.

What are other autoimmune diseases that mimic lupus?

Some of these "SLE mimickers" are very common, such as rosacea which can be mistaken for the butterfly rash, while others such as Kikuchi disease, type-1 interferonopathies, Castleman's disease, prolidase deficiency, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, Evans' syndrome in the context of primary immune deficiencies and ...

What does lupus do to your hair?

Unfortunately, yes. Lupus causes widespread inflammation that usually involves your skin — particularly on your face and scalp. Lupus can cause the hair on your scalp to gradually thin out, although a few people lose clumps of hair. Loss of eyebrow, eyelash, beard and body hair also is possible.

Is Fibromyalgia a form of lupus?

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that involves widespread inflammation and impacts many organs throughout the body. Fibromyalgia a disorder that causes widespread chronic pain and tenderness. Unlike lupus, fibromyalgia is not an inflammatory or autoimmune disease.

Is CH50 high in lupus?

The CH50 is typically below normal. Up to 25% of patients with SLE, however, may have much more dramatic reductions in C4 levels, typically associated with significantly subnormal C3 levels and CH50.

What is ANA with titer?

The level to which a patient's sample can be diluted and still produce recognizable staining is known as the ANA "titer." The ANA titer is a measure of the amount of ANA in the blood; the higher the titer, the more autoantibodies are present in the sample.

What does high C4 complement mean?

Higher-than-normal complement C4 values may be a sign of cancer, ulcerative colitis, and inflammation in general. Lower-than-normal complement C4 values could indicate: bacterial infections. hepatitis. malnutrition.
