In software engineering, blue-green deployment is a method of installing changes to a web, app, or database server by swapping alternating production and staging servers.

What is meant by blue green deployment?

Blue green deployment is an application release model that gradually transfers user traffic from a previous version of an app or microservice to a nearly identical new release—both of which are running in production.

What is a blue green deployment in AWS?

A blue/green deployment is a deployment strategy in which you create two separate, but identical environments. One environment (blue) is running the current application version and one environment (green) is running the new application version.

What does blue Green mean in technology?

A blue/green deployment is a change management strategy for releasing software code. ... The process reverses when the next software iteration is ready for release. If problems are discovered after the switch, traffic can be directed back to the idle configuration that still runs the original version.

Why is it called blue Green?

They finally settled on using colors instead, which didn't have a natural order. Thus, they planned names like blue, green, or orange (they avoided red because it implied danger). In the end, it turned out they only needed two environments. And so the term blue-green was coined.

Blue / Green Deployment Explained

What is bluish green called?

Cyan (aqua)

Which of the following statements are true about the concept of Blue-Green deployment?

Which of the following statements are true about the concept of blue/green deployment regarding development and deployment of your application? It allows you to shift traffic between two identical environments that are running different versions of your application.

What is blue Green database?

Blue-green deployments have two identical production environments, one is labeled Blue and the other is labeled Green . Only one of the environments is ever live, and deployments are always done to the inactive environment.

What's the difference between a blue green deployment and a rolling deployment?

The difference between the rolling and blue/green strategies is that in a rolling strategy, the infrastructure is not in a separate network or environment like in blue/green. Like in-place deployments, rolling deployments suffer from a risky rollback if issues occur during deployment.

How do you automate blue green deployment?

1. DNS switching of load balancer. You can use DNS switching between the two environments.
2. Load balancer switching. You can switch the target of the load balancer.
3. Approach using physical / virtualised machines.

What is Red Black deployment?

Red-Black deployment is a release technique that reduces downtime and risk by running two identical production environments called Red and Black. At any time, only one of the environments is live, with the live environment serving all production traffic.

How do blue-green deployments work?

Blue-green deployment is a technique that reduces downtime and risk by running two identical production environments called Blue and Green. ... Once you have deployed and fully tested the software in Green, you switch the router so all incoming requests now go to Green instead of Blue. Green is now live, and Blue is idle.

What is AWS blue?

When an application is developed and deployed to an AWS Elastic Beanstalk environment, having two separate, but identical, environments—blue and green—increases availability and reduces risk. In this Quick Start architecture, the blue environment is the production environment that normally handles live traffic.

What is a canary deployment?

A canary deployment is a deployment strategy that releases an application or service incrementally to a subset of users. ... A canary release is the lowest risk-prone, compared to all other deployment strategies, because of this control.

What is a rolling deployment?

A rolling deployment is a deployment strategy that slowly replaces previous versions of an application with new versions of an application by completely replacing the infrastructure on which the application is running. ... Rolling deployment strategies can be used with most deployment solutions.

Is Blue-Green deployment expensive?

Sudden Delays: If users are suddenly switched to a new environment, they might experience some slowness. Expenses: Compared to other methods, the blue-green deployments are more expensive. Provisioning infrastructure on-demand helps. But when we're making several scaled-out deployments per day, the costs can snowball.

Is Canary deployment the same as blue-green?

Canary deployment is like blue-green, except it's more risk-averse. Instead of switching from blue to green in one step, you use a phased approach. With canary deployment, you deploy a new application code in a small part of the production infrastructure.

Why is it called Canary deployment?

If you're wondering why it's called a “canary deployment,” that's a good question. Back in the day, miners would put canaries into coal mines as a way to measure the amount of toxic gases that were present. As you can imagine, things didn't always work out in the best way for the canaries.

What is blue-green deployment vs canary?

Canary deployment works similarly to blue-green deployment, but uses a slightly different method. Instead of another full environment waiting to be switched over once deployment is finished, canary deployments cut over just a small subset of servers or nodes first, before finishing the others.

Which is better flyway or Liquibase?

Liquibase seems to have everything Flyway has and more flexibility when it comes to rollbacks. The main advantage of just Flyway seems to be not having to use XML, but Liquibase allows you to specify an SQL file in their XML.

How do you do blue-green deployment in Kubernetes?

1. Version 1 of your application is already deployed.
2. Push version 2 of your application to your container image repository.
3. Deploy version 2 of your application to a new group of pods. ...
4. Run internal testing on version 2 and make sure it is ready to go live.

Who invented blue-green deployment?

History of Blue-Green Deployment

In 2005, two developers named Daniel North and Jez Humble were tackling problems with their e-commerce website. Even with a good testing system in place, errors were still being detected in production, much later than they desired.

What does Cloud Foundry do?

Cloud Foundry is an open source cloud Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) on which developers can build, deploy, run and scale applications. While other cloud platform services are tied to particular cloud providers (such as Amazon, Google or Microsoft), Cloud Foundry is available as a stand-alone software package.

What is CD and CI?

Definition. CI and CD stand for continuous integration and continuous delivery/continuous deployment. ... In the software world, the CI/CD pipeline refers to the automation that enables incremental code changes from developers' desktops to be delivered quickly and reliably to production.

What are canary releases?

A canary deployment, or canary release, is a deployment pattern that allows you to roll out new code/features to a subset of users as an initial test.
