What is arching effect in soil?
Gabriel Cooper Arching occurs when there is a difference of the stiffness between the installed structure and the surrounding soil. If the structure is stiffer than the soil then load arches onto the structure.
Why arching in soil is important?
Soil arching plays a very important role in reducing the embankment load shared by the weak soil between piles, which is essentially a stress redistribution phenomenon caused by the pile-subsoil relative displacement (Δs), and has been proven to be a key load-transfer mechanism in embankments.
What is active arching?
➢ Active arching occurs when the structure is more. compressible than the surrounding soil. ➢ If the structure deforms uniformly on plane AA and. BB, the stresses on it tend to be lower toward the. edges due to mobilized shear stresses in the soil.
What is passive arching?
The opposite condition, known as passive (or negative) arching, occurs when the buried structure yields less than the surrounding mass, resulting in an increase in the stresses acting on the structure relative to the initial stresses.
What are the assumptions of Rankine's theory?
The Rankine's theory assumes that there is no wall friction , the ground and failure surfaces are straight planes, and that the resultant force acts parallel to the backfill slope. In case of retaining structures, the earth retained may be filled up earth or natural soil.

What do you understand the by arching of soils give examples?
Soil arching is a phenomenon describing pressure redistribution due to relative movement between adjoining portions. It commonly exists when soil interacts with structure elements, for example, tunnels, retaining walls, buried structures, and piles in pile-supported embankments.
What is soil bearing capacity?
In a nutshell, bearing capacity is the capacity of soil to support the loads that are applied to the ground above. It depends primarily on the type of soil, its shear strength and its density. It also depends on the depth of embedment of the load – the deeper it is founded, the greater the bearing capacity.
What is the difference between compaction and consolidation?
Compaction is the compression of soil by the expulsion of air from the voids of the soil. Consolidation is the compression of soil by the expulsion of water from voids of the soil.
How do you strengthen weak soil?
The following techniques can be used for improving bearing capacity of soil as per the site condition.- Increasing depth of foundation.
- Draining the soil.
- Compacting the soil.
- Confining the soil.
- Replacing the poor soil.
- Using grouting material.
- Stabilizing the soil with chemicals.
What are different types of slope failures?
Types of slope failure in geotechnical engineering- Rotational failure. When rotational failure occurs, the failed surface will begin to move outwards and downwards. ...
- Translational failure. ...
- Compound failure. ...
- Wedge failure.
When the retaining wall moves into the soil the lateral earth pressure is called as?
(ii) Soil exerts a push against the retaining wall by virtue of its tendency to slip laterally and seek its natural slope or angle of repose. Thus making the wall to move slightly away from the backfilled soil mass. This kind of pressure is known as "active earth pressure".
Which of the following pile is best suited to clay soil?
screw pile is very difficult to drive in dense sandy soil conditions..also, driven pile is not suitable in top soft clay layer..so the best option is bored pile..
What are the uses of vane shear test?
Vane shear test is used to determine the undrained shear strength of soils especially soft clays. This test can be done in laboratory or in the field directly on the ground. Vane shear test gives accurate results for soils of low shear strength (less than 0.3 kg/cm2).
How deep should piles be?
Piles were typically concrete, installed to a depth of 300 mm or more. Houses could be supported fully on piles, or have internal bearer support only provided by piles.
Which of the following is exhibited by collapsible soil?
Explanation: As the common Feature exhibited by collapsible soil is capillary stress, the loose bulky grains in the soil are held together by it.
How deep are clay soil foundations?
Minimum depths
That's why there are minimum foundation depths for each type of clay. Strip, trench fill or pad foundations must be cast at a minimum of 750mm in low plasticity clays, 900mm in medium, and 1000mm in the highest risk areas.
What is KA and KP in soil mechanics?
Ka = Active Earth Pressure 3. Kp = Passive Earth Pressure (Passive is more like a resistance) Earth Pressure At Rest At rest earth pressure occur when there is no wall rotation such as in a braced wall. (
When wall moves away from backfill earth pressure is?
Active state is developed when the wall moves away from the back fill. The active earth pressure is less than pressure at rest because the internal resistance is mobilize in the soil of back fill when wall moves away from the back fill.
Which of the following soil is highly permeable?
Sandy soils are known to have high permeability, which results in high infiltration rates and good drainage. Clay textured soils have small pore spaces that cause water to drain slowly through the soil.
What are 4 types of slopes?
From the previous section, you have discovered that there are four types of slope.- postive slope (when lines go uphill from left to right)
- negative slope (when lines go downhill from left to right)
- zero slope (when lines are horizontal)
- undefined slope (when lines are vertical)
What is soil slope?
The slope of the soil is an important soil property to consider when building or planting. The slope gradient is the angle of incline or decline, expressed in the percent of rise or fall of the soil surface from horizontal over a distance of 100 feet. Soil slope affects the flow of water that can erode the soil.
What are the causes of slopes?
Slope movement occurs when forces acting down-slope (mainly due to gravity) exceed the strength of the earth materials that compose the slope. Causes include factors that increase the effects of down-slope forces and factors that contribute to low or reduced strength.
How can you increase the strength of soil for cohesive soil?
Techniques of Soil Improvement- Surface Compaction.
- Drainage Methods.
- Vibration Methods.
- Precompression and consolidation.
- Grouting and Injection.
- Chemical Stabilisation.
- Soil Reinforcement.
- Geo textiles and Geo membranes.
