What does Infrasternal mean?

Below or deep to the breastbone.

What is Intrasternal?

What is a wide ISA?

A wide infrasternal angle (usually over ~110 degrees), is reflective on an indvidual who has a compressed axial skeleton. ... A narrow ISA (under ~110 degrees but usually much less) is an individual who has an overly-inflated ribcage, and their diaphragm is especially descended.

What is Costoxiphoid angle?

the angle formed between the right or left costal arch and the long axis of the xiphoid process (usually identical to the midline); it is one half of the infrasternal angle.

Where is the Manubrium bone located?

The manubrium (Latin for "handle") is the broad upper part of the sternum. It has a quadrangular shape, narrowing from the top, which gives it four borders. The suprasternal notch (jugular notch) is located in the middle at the upper broadest part of the manubrium. This notch can be felt between the two clavicles.

What is manubrium bone?

The manubrium is the most massive, thickest, and squarest of three main sternal elements. It is the superior-most element of the sternum and is the widest part of this bone. ... Clavicular notches occupy the superior corners of the sternum. It is here that the manubrium articulates with the right and left clavicles.

What is the purpose of the manubrium?

The manubrium is the most superior region of the sternum and articulates with the clavicles or collarbones and the first pair of ribs. The manubrium is the thickest portion of the sternum as it carries the greatest physical load.

Can you feel your manubrium?

At its inferior end, the manubrium meets the body of the sternum at the joint with the costal cartilage of the second ribs. Here it forms the sternal angle, a slight posterior bend in the sternum that can be felt through the skin and serves as an important anatomical landmark in the medical profession.

What is Xiphisternal angle?

The xiphisternal joint (or more rarely, the sternoxiphoid joint) is a symphysis between the inferior margin of the body of the sternum and the superior margin of the xiphoid process. In most people it ossifies with age, usually becoming fully fused by the age of 40 years, forming a synostosis.

Where are the Costovertebral joints located?

The costovertebral joints are the joints that connect the ribs to the vertebral column. The articulation of the head of the rib connects the head of the rib to the bodies of the thoracic vertebrae.

What is your xiphoid process?

The xiphoid process is a tiny bone structure located at the center of the chest, just below the lower part of the sternum. At birth, the xiphoid process is formed from cartilage that eventually develops into bone.

Are costovertebral joints synovial?

The two facets articulate with the vertebral bodies above, and below, to form the costovertebral joint. This surface on the tubercle of the rib articulates with the tip of the transverse process, to form the costo-transverse joint. These two joints are synovial joints.

What kind of joint is costovertebral joint?

The costovertebral joints describe two groups of synovial plane joints which connect the proximal end of the ribs with their corresponding thoracic vertebrae, enclosing the thoracic cage from the posterior side. Head - Two convex facets from the head attach to two adjacent vertebrae.

What is Costovertebral pain?

Costovertebral pain is pain originating at the articulation of the head of the rib as it meets the vertebral body. The costovertebral joint is a synovial joint with a synovial cavity that contains innervations. Costovertebral pain often mimics cardiopulmonary-related pain.

What type of joint is Xiphisternal?

The xiphisternal joint (or xiphisternal symphysis) is a location near the bottom of the sternum, where the body of the sternum and the xiphoid process meet. It is structurally classified as a synchondrosis, and functionally classified as a synarthrosis.

What is the Manubriosternal angle?

Anatomical terminology

The sternal angle (also known as the angle of Louis, angle of Ludovic or manubriosternal junction) is the synarthrotic joint formed by the articulation of the manubrium and the body of the sternum. The sternal angle is a palpable clinical landmark in surface anatomy.

Are there 12 pairs of ribs?

In humans there are normally 12 pairs of ribs. The first seven pairs are attached directly to the sternum by costal cartilages and are called true ribs. The 8th, 9th, and 10th pairs—false ribs—do not join the sternum…

Why does my Manubrium stick out?

Pectus carinatum is a childhood condition in which the sternum (breastbone) sticks out more than usual. It is believed to be a disorder of the cartilage that joins the ribs to the breastbone.

Is it normal to feel xiphoid process?
