Electrodes are placed deep in the brain and are connected to a stimulator device. Similar to a heart pacemaker, a neurostimulator uses electric pulses to regulate brain activity.

How successful is deep brain stimulation?

CONCLUSIONS: DBS for PD is associated with a 10-year survival rate of 51%. Survey data suggest that while DBS does not halt disease progression in PD, it provides durable symptomatic relief and allows many individuals to maintain ADLs over long-term follow-up greater than 10 years.

Does deep brain stimulation hurt?

This part of the procedure is not painful, as the brain does not feel pain. Being awake allows the surgical team to interact with you when testing the effects of the stimulation. However, some patients who cannot tolerate the procedure while awake can have the electrode and lead placed under general anesthesia.

What type of therapy is deep brain stimulation?

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions.

How long is deep brain stimulation effective?

Associated with several positive outcomes in patients with PD, including decreasing risk of disease progression, researchers say that STN-DBS has been shown to maintain efficacy in patients up to 11 years after surgery.

Is deep brain stimulation used for depression?

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been shown to be a viable option for some people who have depression. Doctors originally used it to help manage Parkinson's disease. In DBS, a doctor implants tiny electrodes in the part of the brain that regulates mood.
