Hypertrophy: Enlargement or overgrowth of an organ or part of the body due to the increased size of the constituent cells.

What are the causes of hypertrophy?

The most common cause of LVH is high blood pressure (hypertension). Other causes include athletic hypertrophy (a condition related to exercise), valve disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and congenital heart disease.

What is hypertrophy an example of?

Hypertrophy is an increase in the size of cells (or tissues) in response to various stimuli. A typical example is muscular hypertrophy in response to exercise. Exercise stimulates skeletal and cardiac muscle fibers to increase in diameter and to accumulate more structural contractile proteins.

What is the cardiac hypertrophy?

Cardiac hypertrophy is the abnormal enlargement, or thickening, of the heart muscle, resulting from increases in cardiomyocyte size and changes in other heart muscle components, such as extracellular matrix.

What is hypertrophy and hyperplasia?

Hypertrophy refers to an increase in the size of the cell while hyperplasia refers to an increase in the number of cells or fibers. A single muscle cell is usually called a fiber.

Is hypertrophy good or bad?

While hypertrophy can eventually normalize wall tension, it is associated with an unfavorable outcome and threatens affected patients with sudden death or progression to overt heart failure.

How serious is thickening of the heart?

The thickened heart muscle can eventually become too stiff to effectively fill the heart with blood. As a result, your heart can't pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. Sudden cardiac death. Rarely, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can cause heart-related sudden death in people of all ages.

What is hypertrophy in pregnancy?

Cardiac hypertrophy and reversibility of cardiac hypertrophy during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the heart develops mild eccentric hypertrophy¹⁰ characterized by an increase in chamber dimension or physiological hypertrophy characterized by a proportional increase in chamber dimension and wall thickness.

What medications should be avoided with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?

Agents to reduce pre- or afterload (such as nitrate, ACE inhibitors, nifedipine-type calcium antagonists) are contraindicated with HOCM due to possible aggravation of the outflow tract obstruction. This often impedes therapy of coexistent arterial hypertension.

What are the 2 types of hypertrophy?

• myofibrillar: growth of muscle contraction parts.
• sarcoplasmic: increased muscle glycogen storage.

Is an enlarged left ventricle to heart life threatening?
