The carpogonium is the female organ in the Red Algae which have a highly specialized type of reproduction. It contains the reproductive nucleus. It may contain a number of cells usually without chloroplasts. It shows an elongated process which is the receptive organ for the male gametes.

What are carpogonia in example?

: the egg-bearing portion of the female reproductive organ in some red algae.

What is the function of a trichogyne?

The trichogyne functions as a receptive organ. As the spermatium comes in the vicinity of the carpogonium, it gets attached to the trichogyne. Common walls dissolve at the point of attachment.

What is a Carposporangium?

Carposporangium – (plural: carposporangia) in red algae, the cell in a carposporophyte that produces carpospores. ... Carposporophyte – formed by the union of haploid gametes in red algae; diploid (2n) stage of the life cycle that is carried by the haploid female gametophyte in the cystocarp; produces carpospores.

Where is carpogonium found?

carpogonium (pl. carpogonia) The female gametangium of the red algae (see Rhodophyta). Carpogonia, which are found at the tips of the female gametophyte, are flask-shaped structures from which protrudes a slender elongation called a trichogyne.

Who is popularly known as father of phycology?

History of phycology

Harvey has been called "the father of modern phycology" in part for his division of the algae into four major divisions based upon their pigmentation. It was in the late 19th and early 20th century, that phycology became a recognized field of its own.

Why Polysiphonia is so called?

The genus Polysiphonia derives its name from the polysiphonous nature of its thallus. The central siphon is surrounded by 4–24 pericentral siphons. Polysiphonia is commonly found as an epiphyte on plants and lithophyte on rocks in brackish estuaries in the intertidal and sublittoral regions.

What is the nature of carpospores?

A carpospore is a diploid spore produced by red algae. After fertilization, the alga's carpogonium subdivides into carpospores, and generally the largest type of spore (larger than bispores, which are larger again than tetraspores).

What is trumpet hyphae?

: one of the conducting cells in the tissues of the stems of brown algae of the family Laminariaceae that resemble sieve tubes and are long with swollen ends.

What is the meaning of Thalloid?

: of, relating to, resembling, or consisting of a thallus thalloid liverworts.

What is a Trichogyne?

: a slender terminal prolongation of the ascogonium of a fungus that may serve as a fertilization tube also : a similar reproductive structure in a red alga.

How Trichogyne are formed?

Trichogyne is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family, Asteraceae. In the fungal phylum of Ascomycota, trichogyne is what is formed by the fusion of the "male" and "female" hyphal strands.

What is Tetraspores in biology?

Tetraspores are red algae spores produced by the tetrasporophytic (diploid) phase in the life history of algae in the Rhodophyta as a result of meiosis. The name is derived from the 4 spores that form after this meiosis, the division is of three kinds: cruciate, zonate and tetrahedral.

What is the study of algae called?

phycology, also called algology, the study of algae, a large heterogeneous group of chiefly aquatic plants ranging in size from microscopic forms to species as large as shrubs or trees.

Are Algin and carrageenan products of algae?

Complete answer: - Algin is obtained from brown algae and carrageenan is obtained from red algae. - Carrageenan is present in red seaweeds. It is used to thicken a variety of foods, ice cream, salad dressings, chocolate milk, and jellies.

How is red algae different from green and brown algae?

The main difference between red brown and green algae is that red algae contain chlorophyll a, chlorophyll d, and phycoerythrin, while brown algae contain chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c, and fucoxanthin and green algae contain chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and xanthophylls.

Which of the following are Phycocolloids?

The three major phycocolloids are alginates, agars, and carrageenans.

What is meant by Diplobiontic life cycle?

This is the life cycle in which the haploid phase is followed by two successive diploid generations. In plants like Polysiphonia the haploid plant (gametophyte) produces diploid zygote after gametic fusion. This is called the diplobiontic life cycle. ...

Which phase of the Polysiphonia life cycle is completely parasitic?

A complex series of fusions and developments follow as the diploid zygote develops to become the carposporophyte, this is a separate phase of the life-cycle and is entirely parasitic on the female, it is surrounded by the haploid pericarp of the parent female plant.

What is the type of life cycle in Polysiphonia?

In life cycle of Polysiphonia two diploid phases carposprophyte and tetra sporophyte alternate with one haploid gametophytic phase. The life cycle of Polysiphonia can be called as triphasic diplobiontic with isomorphic alternation of generation (Figs. 8, 9).

Why is Polysiphonia red?

Polysiphonia, a common genus of marine red algae, is red in color because of the pigment phycobilin, which masks the green color of the chlorophyll responsible for photosynthesis.

What is the meaning of Polysiphonia?

: a large genus of red algae (family Rhodomelaceae) having usually a filamentous much-branched thallus variable in shape and size but in cross section showing a single axial cell surrounded by a sheath of tubular cells at least in the axis and main branches.

What is pericarp in red algae?

The cystocarp has an external layer called the pericarp that is formed from the female gametophyte's tissue (meaning it is haploid). Within the pericarp, the zygote has grown by mitosis into a carposporophyte making elongated carposporangia. Inside each carposporangium, diploid carpospores are produced by mitosis.

How do I become a Phycologist?

There are four common steps to become a psychologist: earning a bachelor's degree; obtaining an advanced psychology degree (i.e., a master's, doctorate or both) from an accredited program; completing at least a one-year internship or postdoctoral program to gain experience working with patients; and obtaining a license ...

What are algae and phycology?

Psychology also involves the study of some prokaryotic forms such as blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. Psychologists mainly focused on freshwater, ocean algae, or those areas where diatoms or soft algae are present. Algae are considered as important primary producers in aquatic ecosystems.
