Ataxia means without coordination. People with ataxia lose muscle control in their arms and legs. This may lead to a lack of balance, coordination, and trouble walking. Ataxia may affect the fingers, hands, arms, legs, body, speech, and even eye movements.

What do u mean by ataxia?

Ataxia is typically defined as the presence of abnormal, uncoordinated movements. This usage describes signs & symptoms without reference to specific diseases. An unsteady, staggering gait is described as an ataxic gait because walking is uncoordinated and appears to be 'not ordered'.

What is ataxia and what causes it?

Ataxia is usually caused by damage to a part of the brain known as the cerebellum, but it can also be caused by damage to the spinal cord or other nerves. The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves that runs down the spine and connects the brain to all other parts of the body.

What are the 3 types of ataxia?

There are 3 types of ataxia, namely proprioceptive, cerebellar and vestibular.

What is ataxia in biology?

Ataxia is a neurological disorder characterized by loss of control of body movements. Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), previously known as autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia, is a biologically robust group of close to 30 progressive neurodegenerative diseases.

What is ataxia?

What are the symptoms of ataxia?

• Balance and coordination are affected first.
• Poor coordination of hands, arms, and legs.
• Slurring of speech.
• Wide-based gait (manner of walking)
• Difficulty with writing and eating.
• Slow eye movements.

What does ataxia look like?

A sign of a number of neurological disorders, ataxia can cause: Poor coordination. Unsteady walk and a tendency to stumble. Difficulty with fine motor tasks, such as eating, writing or buttoning a shirt.

How serious is ataxia?

Life expectancy is generally shorter than normal for people with hereditary ataxia, although some people can live well into their 50s, 60s or beyond. In more severe cases, the condition can be fatal in childhood or early adulthood. For acquired ataxia, the outlook depends on the underlying cause.

Is ataxia a symptom or a disease?

Ataxia is a degenerative disease of the nervous system. Many symptoms of Ataxia mimic those of being drunk, such as slurred speech, stumbling, falling, and incoordination. These symptoms are caused by damage to the cerebellum, the part of the brain that is responsible for coordinating movement.

Can ataxia be cured?

There's no treatment specifically for ataxia. In some cases, treating the underlying cause resolves the ataxia, such as stopping medications that cause it. In other cases, such as ataxia that results from chickenpox or other viral infections, it's likely to resolve on its own.

How do you test for ataxia?

Genetic testing involves taking a sample of blood and testing the DNA in it for any genetic mutation known to cause ataxia. Currently, tests can detect the mutations responsible for Friedreich's ataxia, ataxia-telangiectasia and most of the spinocerebellar ataxias.

What are the types of ataxia?

There are several types of ataxia, including: ataxia telangiectasia (AT), episodic ataxia, Friedreich's ataxia, multiple system atrophy (MSA) and spinocerebellar ataxia. This condition happens when the part of the brain called the cerebellum is damaged. There is no cure for ataxia, but the symptoms can be treated.

Can ataxia be caused by stress?

Episodes of ataxia and other symptoms can begin anytime from early childhood to adulthood. They can be triggered by environmental factors such as emotional stress, caffeine, alcohol, certain medications, physical activity, and illness. The frequency of attacks ranges from several per day to one or two per year.

Can ataxia cause pain?

Damage to the nerve endings can result in nerve pain.

What kind of doctor treats ataxia?

It is therefore crucial that patients with ataxia consult neurologists with a special expertise in the field of ataxia. Doctors collaborate with other health care professionals with expertise on ataxia.

How does ataxia affect everyday life?

Ataxia signifies a loss of the ability to execute coordinated voluntary movements. This trouble can afflict the limbs, the trunk, the neck, the head, breathing, swallowing, language, the pharynx, the larynx, and other structures. These troubles evolve progressively.

Does ataxia affect memory?

Patients with cerebellar atrophy may have impaired recall of newly learned information or difficulty with “executive functions” such as making plans and keeping thoughts in proper sequence.

How long can ataxia last?

People who have EA experience episodes of poor coordination and/or balance (ataxia) which can last from several seconds to several hours. There are at least eight recognized types of EA. All are hereditary, though different types are associated with different genetic causes, ages of onset, and symptoms.

Does ataxia affect breathing?

The weakness of these muscles provokes in an ataxic person a respiratory difficulty which manifests itself by breathlessness, even for moderate work. Ataxic persons show difficulty to accomplish several actions while maintaining their breathing. To converse, to walk and to breathe simultaneously becomes difficult.

Is ataxia a disability?

Ataxia can be disabling, and if you are unable to work and earn a living because of the severity of the condition, you may qualify for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Is ataxia a chronic disease?

Overview of the progressive ataxias

The types of ataxia discussed here are chronic conditions that progress slowly and often result in people losing their ability to walk. Another common symptom is slurring of speech. Depending on the type of ataxia and its severity, many other symptoms can occur (box 1).

Is ataxia a symptom of Parkinsons?

Uncoordinated movement can be a symptom of many underlying causes, from viral infections to head injuries to Parkinson's disease. Symptoms of ataxia can be a sign that you may have a disorder of the nervous system or a part of the brain that coordinates movement (known as the cerebellum).

What is ataxia in stroke?

When a stroke affects the cerebellum, it can result in a secondary effect known as ataxia. Ataxia involves a lack of coordination and muscle control due to neurological dysfunction. This means the nervous system struggles to coordinated movement.

How does alcohol affect ataxia?

Damage from alcohol is a common cause of cerebellar ataxia. In patients with alcohol related ataxia, the symptoms affect gait (walking) and lower limbs more than arms and speech. It can also cause associated signs of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the body's peripheral nervous system.

What is ataxia or Dysmetria?

Diseases affecting the cerebellum typically cause ataxia, coupled with dysmetria and tremor. Dysmetria is a condition in which there is improper measuring of distance in muscular acts; hypermetria is overreaching (overstepping) and hypometria is underreaching (understepping).
