The kidneys can regulate water levels in the body; they conserve water if you are dehydrated, and they can make urine more dilute to expel excess water if necessary.

What part of the nephron conserves water?

The kidney conserves water by first diluting urine as it moves through the loop of Henle and then concentrating urine in the distal tubules and collecting ducts (the latter under the influence of antidiuretic hormone or ADH).

Which excretory organ helps to control the water potential of the tissue fluids?

Excess water, electrolytes, and wastes are transported to the kidneys and excreted, helping to maintain osmotic balance. Insufficient fluid intake results in fluid conservation by the kidneys.

Why do kidneys act both Osmoregulatory and excretory organs?

Kidneys: The Main Osmoregulatory Organ. ... Oxygen allows the kidney cells to efficiently manufacture chemical energy in the form of ATP through aerobic respiration. Kidneys eliminate wastes from the body; urine is the filtrate that exits the kidneys.

Which organ of the excretory system stores urine until the body is ready to eliminate it?

Bladder: Your bladder holds urine until you're ready to empty it (pee). It's hollow, made of muscle, and shaped like a balloon. Your bladder expands as it fills up.

What vessels absorb the solutes and water from the nephron?

In the renal system, peritubular capillaries are tiny blood vessels, supplied by the efferent arteriole, that travel alongside nephrons allowing reabsorption and secretion between blood and the inner lumen of the nephron.

How does the Vasa recta reabsorb water?

The vasa recta capillaries are long, hairpin-shaped blood vessels that run parallel to the loops of Henle. The hairpin turns slow the rate of blood flow, which helps maintain the osmotic gradient required for water reabsorption.

How does the kidney conserve water?

Either the kidneys can conserve water by producing urine that is concentrated relative to plasma, or they can rid the body of excess water by producing urine that is dilute relative to plasma.

What is water homeostasis?

Water homeostasis is achieved by regulation of water intake and water loss by the kidneys. The former is achieved by sensations of thirst that motivate water acquisition, whereas the latter is regulated by the antidiuretic action of vasopressin.

What factors decrease your fluid output?

Environmental temperature and humidity, altitude, volume of air inspired, air currents, clothing, blood circulation through skin, and water content of the body can all affect insensible water loss (15).

How do the kidneys function in maintaining homeostasis in fluid volume?

The kidneys maintain homeostasis by controlling the amount of water, ions, and other substances in the blood. Kidneys also secrete hormones that have other homeostatic functions.

How does the vasa recta concentrate urine?

Vasa Recta Function

As with the loop of Henle, the vasa recta form a parallel set of hairpin loops within the medulla (see Chapter 2). ... As a result, the medullary interstitial osmotic gradient cannot be maintained, which also reduces the ability to concentrate the urine.

Does the loop of Henle reabsorb water?

This part of the nephron is called the loop of Henle. Its main function is to reabsorb water and sodium chloride from the filtrate. This conserves water for the organism, producing highly concentrated urine.

Which solutes are reabsorbed from the nephron loop?

Substances reabsorbed in the PCT include urea, water, potassium, sodium, chloride, glucose, amino acids, lactate, phosphate, and bicarbonate. Since water is also reabsorbed the volume of fluid in the loop of Henle is less than the PCT, approximately one-third of the original volume.

What is reabsorption in urine formation?

Reabsorption Moves Nutrients and Water Back into the Bloodstream. The glomerulus filters water and small solutes out of the bloodstream. The resulting filtrate contains waste, but also other substances the body needs: essential ions, glucose, amino acids, and smaller proteins.

What structure carries urine out of the kidney?

The center part of the kidney, the medulla (meh-DUH-luh), has fan-shaped structures called pyramids. These drain urine into cup-shaped tubes called calyxes (KAY-luh-seez). From the calyxes, pee travels out of the kidneys through the ureters (YUR-uh-ters) to be stored in the bladder (a muscular sac in the lower belly).

Where does the Vasa recta arise from?

The ascending vasa recta originate from capillaries at any level of the medulla and ascend without joining together towards the intrarenal veins at the cortico-medullary border. They are capillary vessels with wide lumina.

What is the role of loop of Henle in the reabsorption of water?

The principal function of the loop of Henle is in the recovery of water and sodium chloride from urine. This function allows production of urine that is far more concentrated than blood, limiting the amount of water needed as intake for survival.

What is the function of DCT?

The distal convoluted tubule (DCT) is a short nephron segment, interposed between the macula densa and collecting duct. Even though it is short, it plays a key role in regulating extracellular fluid volume and electrolyte homeostasis.

Is water reabsorbed in the collecting duct?

Water reabsorption takes place in the cortical collecting duct (CCD) cells, induced by the peptide hormone vasopressin. An increase in 3'5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels in these cells leads to an increasing permeability of the CCD apical membrane to water.

What makes urine concentrated?

When water intake is large enough to dilute blood plasma, a urine more dilute than blood plasma is produced; when water intake is so small that blood plasma is concentrated, a urine more concentrated than blood plasma is produced.

What controls the concentration of urine?

Urine volume and concentration is regulated through the same processes that regulate blood volume. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)—produced by the posterior pituitary gland —increases the amount of water reabsorbed in the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct.

Where does concentration of urine takes place?

The glomerulus is the filtering unit of blood. These are present in the network of capillary. Hence, the concentration of urine depends upon the loop of henle. The concentration gradient occurs in the medulla of the kidney.

What carries urine to the urethra?

ureters: two thin tubes that take pee from the kidney to the bladder. bladder: a sac that holds pee until it's time to go to the bathroom. urethra: the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body when you pee.

What are some examples of factors that can affect the amount of urine excreted each day?

• The consumption of certain types of food.
• The amount of liquid consumed.
• The amount of food consumed.
• The amount of fluid lost through breathing and perspiration.
• Medical conditions.
• Certain medications.
