What cellular process occurs on the infolded membranes shown at B? The folded membranes that comprise the cristae and the gel-like fluid between them (the matrix) are the locations of cellular respiration.

What major function occurs on the specific membranes indicated by a?

What major function occurs on the specific membranes indicated by A? Structure A is the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The figure illustrates how proteins are synthesized on ribosomes bound to the rough ER, sorted in the Golgi, and delivered to the plasma membrane for secretion or packaged into lysosomes.

Which organelle is responsible for processing and packaging proteins destined for export from the cell quizlet?

What is the major function of the Golgi apparatus? Modify, concentrate, and package the proteins and lipids made at the rough ER and destined for export from the cell. What are the steps in the Golgi apparatus process of sending proteins and lipids on their way?

Why is it necessary for glucose to be pumped into the cell?

Why is it necessary for glucose to be pumped into the cell rather than diffusing in? Glucose may have to be moved against a concentration gradient. ... During exocytosis, substances from inside the cell are moved outside.

During which phase of the cell cycle does DNA duplication or replication take place?

During which phase of the cell cycle does DNA duplication, or replication, take place? DNA replicates during interphase. This process provides each new daughter cell with a full complement of genetic material. When a double helix of DNA is replicated, two complete helices are formed.

Inside the Cell Membrane

What is the cell doing during G1 and G2?

Initially in G1 phase, the cell grows physically and increases the volume of both protein and organelles. In S phase, the cell copies its DNA to produce two sister chromatids and replicates its nucleosomes. Finally, G2 phase involves further cell growth and organisation of cellular contents.

What happens in G2 phase?

Gap 2 (G2): During the gap between DNA synthesis and mitosis, the cell will continue to grow and produce new proteins. ... Mitosis or M Phase: Cell growth and protein production stop at this stage in the cell cycle.

How does glucose transport across the cell membrane?

A glucose molecule is too large to pass through a cell membrane via simple diffusion. Instead, cells assist glucose diffusion through facilitated diffusion and two types of active transport.

How does glucose pass through the cell membrane?

For glucose

Since glucose is a large molecule, its diffusion across a membrane is difficult. Hence, it diffuses across membranes through facilitated diffusion, down the concentration gradient. The carrier protein at the membrane binds to the glucose and alters its shape such that it can easily to be transported.

How do glucose molecules enter a cell?

Glucose enters most cells by facilitated diffusion. There seem to be a limiting number of glucose-transporting proteins. The rapid breakdown of glucose in the cell (a process known as glycolysis) maintains the concentration gradient.

Which organelle is responsible for processing and packaging proteins destined for export from the cell peroxisomes lysosomes endoplasmic reticulum Golgi apparatus?

Golgi apparatus (aka Golgi body aka Golgi)

It is responsible for packing proteins from the rough endoplasmic reticulum into membrane-bound vesicles (tiny compartments of lipid bilayer that store molecules) which then translocate to the cell membrane.

Which organelle is responsible for processing and packaging proteins destined for export from the cell group of answer choices?

The Golgi apparatus, or Golgi complex, functions as a factory in which proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted for transport to their eventual destinations: lysosomes, the plasma membrane, or secretion. In addition, as noted earlier, glycolipids and sphingomyelin are synthesized within the Golgi.

Which organelle is responsible for processing and packaging?

The Golgi apparatus is responsible for transporting, modifying, and packaging proteins and lipids into vesicles for delivery to targeted destinations.

Do phospholipids provide cell specific functions of the plasma membrane?

Phospholipids provide the cell-specific functions of the plasma membrane. flase, Proteins, not phospholipids, carry out most of the specific functions provided by the plasma membrane.

What does passive membrane transport processes include?

Three common types of passive transport include simple diffusion, osmosis, and facilitated diffusion. Simple Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. A couple of common examples will help to illustrate this concept.

Which of the following is a characteristic of the cell membrane quizlet?

Which of the following is a characteristic of the cell membrane? The cell membrane is semipermeable, or selectively permeable, because some things can easily pass through it while others cannot. You just studied 15 terms!

Is cell membrane permeable to glucose?

The plasma membrane is a selectively permeable barrier between the cell and the extracellular environment. ... The phospholipid bilayer — the basic structural unit of biomembranes — is essentially impermeable to most water-soluble molecules, such as glucose and amino acids, and to ions.

How does glucose get into cells ks3?

Glucose is formed by the breakdown of carbohydrates in the small intestine. Glucose is then absorbed into the blood from the small intestine via the villi by active transport. Glucose and oxygen travel in the bloodstream and are taken up into cells. Respiration takes place in the mitochondria, producing energy.

Why does glucose transporter cross the cell membrane?

Glucose serves as a major source of energy for metabolic processes in mammalian cells. Since polar molecules cannot be transported across the plasma membrane, carrier proteins called glucose transporters are needed for cellular uptake.

How does glucose enter the cell with insulin?

Cells obtain energy from glucose or convert it to fat for long-term storage. Like a key fits into a lock, insulin binds to receptors on the cell's surface, causing GLUT4 molecules to come to the cell's surface. As their name implies, glucose transporter proteins act as vehicles to ferry glucose inside the cell.

Why can't glucose pass through the cell membrane?

Although glucose can be more concentrated outside of a cell, it cannot cross the lipid bilayer via simple diffusion because it is both large and polar, and therefore, repelled by the phospholipid membrane.

What happens in the G2 phase of the cell cycle quizlet?

The cell's DNA is copied in the process of DNA replication. What happens during the G2 phase? ... This phase includes both mitosis and cytokinesis, during which the chromosomes are sorted and separated to ensure that each daughter cell receives a complete set. After this, cytokinesis divides the cell in two.

What does the G2 checkpoint do in the cell cycle?

The G2 checkpoint prevents cells from entering mitosis when DNA is damaged, providing an opportunity for repair and stopping the proliferation of damaged cells. Because the G2 checkpoint helps to maintain genomic stability, it is an important focus in understanding the molecular causes of cancer.

What happens during the G2 phase of the cell cycle to prepare a cell for mitosis?

During the second gap phase, or G 2start subscript, 2, end subscript phase, the cell grows more, makes proteins and organelles, and begins to reorganize its contents in preparation for mitosis. G 2start subscript, 2, end subscript phase ends when mitosis begins.

What happens in G1 of the cell cycle?

G1 phase. G1 is an intermediate phase occupying the time between the end of cell division in mitosis and the beginning of DNA replication during S phase. During this time, the cell grows in preparation for DNA replication, and certain intracellular components, such as the centrosomes undergo replication.
