Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening syndrome resulting from the breakdown of skeletal muscle fibers with leakage of muscle contents into the circulation. The most common causes are crush injury, overexertion, alcohol abuse and certain medicines and toxic substances.

How do you get rhabdomyolysis?

1. High-intensity exercise: Jumping into an exercise program too fast can lead to rhabdomyolysis when muscles don't have time to heal after an intense workout.
2. Severe dehydration and overheating: Heat causes faster muscle breakdown.

How easy is it to get rhabdomyolysis?

Any intense exercise can cause rhabdo, but recent case studies suggest it's more likely to strike when someone dives right into a form of exercise they're unaccustomed to. High intensity interval training, or HIIT, is incredibly effective in providing long term health benefits.

What movements cause rhabdo?

Eccentric motion is very demanding on muscles. Stretching muscles under a load with lots of repetition can cause the muscle breakdown that triggers rhabdo. Jumping pull ups, GHD sit ups, and walking lunges are examples of exercises with a strong eccentric phase.

Can running cause rhabdomyolysis?

Strenuous exercise, including marathon running, can result in damage to skeletal muscle cells, a process known as exertional rhabdomyolysis. In most cases, this damage is resolved without consequence.

How does Rhabdo feel?

The “classic triad” of rhabdomyolysis symptoms are: muscle pain in the shoulders, thighs, or lower back; muscle weakness or trouble moving arms and legs; and dark red or brown urine or decreased urination. Keep in mind that half of people with the condition may have no muscle-related symptoms.

Can Covid cause rhabdomyolysis?

COVID-19 can present with a variety of complications during the course of infection. Rhabdomyolysis is characterized by muscle necrosis and the release of intracellular muscle constituents into the systemic circulation. A prompt diagnosis is a prerequisite for successful treatment and avoiding complications.

Can Rhabdo be treated at home?

Most cases of rhabdo are treated at home simply by increasing fluid intake. If muscle enzyme levels are high, or if there are signs of kidney problems, IV fluids may be needed. In some cases, we have to admit patients to the hospital and even to the ICU for close monitoring and further treatment.

Can too much exercise cause rhabdomyolysis?

However, excessive or intense exercise beyond the extent of one's personal or physical limits may induce various types of musculoskeletal damage, including exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis (EIR), a pathophysiological condition of skeletal muscle damage.

Which class of drug can cause rhabdomyolysis?

Statins are the only class of drugs that commonly lead to skeletal muscle injury, in particular when combined with drugs interacting on the level of pharmacokinetics.

How do I stop rhabdomyolysis?

Drinking water and taking breaks can help prevent rhabdo. Be aware that job or recreational activities involving exertion and/or heat exposure could increase your risk for rhabdo and try to avoid these risk factors if possible.

Can lifting weights cause rhabdomyolysis?

Rhabdomyolysis is the result of massive muscle destruction, and there are many causes such as: Extremely aggressive workouts lifting weights, extreme workout videos, or extreme cross-training.

Can you get Rhabdo from stress?

When your body temperature is out of control (hyperthermia), it puts extra stress on your system, and can lead to exertional rhabdomyolysis.

Has anyone died from rhabdomyolysis?

Patients using illicit drugs or on prescribed polytherapy are at risk for rhabdomyolysis. The absence of urine myoglobin, by qualitative assay, does not exclude rhabdomyolysis. With appropriate care, death is rare.

Who is at risk for rhabdomyolysis?

Anyone can get rhabdo, but some workers are at a higher risk than others. People who work in hot environments and/or perform strenuous physical tasks have a higher chance of getting rhabdo. Some of these groups include: Firefighters (both structural and wildland)

Can ibuprofen cause rhabdomyolysis?

In cases of prolonged and supratherapeutic ingestion of ibuprofen, renal tubular acidosis (RTA) with profound hypokalemia may occur. Although hypokalemia is known to cause rhabdomyolysis, rhabdomyolysis occurring in the setting of ibuprofen-induced RTA is rare.

Why do Crossfitters get Rhabdo?

Rhabdomyolysis, or “rhabdo,” is a rare condition that can occur from exercising. Muscles become so overworked their cell contents are released into the blood stream, causing injury to the kidneys.

How is rhabdomyolysis diagnosed?

The only way to know you have rhabdo is through a blood test that checks for the presence of a muscle protein, creatine kinase (CK), in the blood. If you suspect that you may have rhabdo, ask to have your CK levels checked. Symptoms can appear any time after muscle injury.

How long does it take to recover from rhabdomyolysis?

If the condition is recognized and treated early, you can avoid most major complications and expect a full recovery. Recovery from exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis, with no major complications, can take several weeks to months for the patient to return to exercise without recurrence of symptoms.
