Network load balancing is the ability to balance traffic across two or more WAN links without using complex routing protocols like BGP.

What do network load balancers do?

The Network Load Balancing (NLB) feature distributes traffic across several servers by using the TCP/IP networking protocol. By combining two or more computers that are running applications into a single virtual cluster, NLB provides reliability and performance for web servers and other mission-critical servers.

What is network load balancer and how it works?

Network Load Balancer overview. A Network Load Balancer functions at the fourth layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. It can handle millions of requests per second. After the load balancer receives a connection request, it selects a target from the target group for the default rule.

What are examples of load balancers?

Software-based load balancers can be classified into two broad categories: installable load balancers and Load Balancer as a Service (LBaaS). Some examples of installable software load balancers are: Nginx, Varnish, HAProxy and LVS. These load balancers require installation, configuration as well management.

What are the three types of load balancers?

AWS offers three types of load balancers, adapted for various scenarios: Elastic Load Balancers, Application Load Balancers, and Network Load Balancers.

What is Network Load Balancer AWS?

AWS Network Load Balancer (NLB) is an Amazon Web Services (AWS) tool that distributes end user traffic across multiple cloud resources to ensure low latency and high throughput for applications. ... When a target becomes slow or unavailable, the Network Load Balancer routes traffic to another target.

What layer is network load balancer?

Network Load Balancer operates at the connection level (Layer 4), routing connections to targets (Amazon EC2 instances, microservices, and containers) within Amazon VPC, based on IP protocol data.

Which load balancer is best?

• F5 Load Balancer BIG-IP platforms. ...
• A10 Application Delivery & Load Balancer. ...
• Citrix ADC (formerly NetScaler ADC) ...
• Avi Vantage Software Load Balancer. ...
• Radware's Alteon Application Delivery Controller.

What is the difference between network load balancer and application load balancer?

Network Load Balancer — This is the distribution of traffic based on network variables, such as IP address and destination ports. ... Each Target can be on different ports. Application Load Balancer — This is the distribution of requests based on multiple variables, from the network layer to the application layer.

Which load balancer is best AWS?

We select ALB because it integrates really well with Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (Amazon EKS), AWS Fargate, and AWS Lambda. So, it's a no-brainer choice for building new infrastructure. Many customers are still running on CLB.

Why do we need nginx?

Because it can handle a high volume of connections, NGINX is commonly used as a reverse proxy and load balancer to manage incoming traffic and distribute it to slower upstream servers – anything from legacy database servers to microservices.

What is Alb and NLB in AWS?

Application Load Balancer (ALB) is a fully managed layer 7 load balancing service that load balances incoming traffic across multiple targets, such as Amazon EC2 instances. ... Network Load Balancer (NLB) operates at layer 4 load balancing both TCP and UDP traffic.

Is load balancer a software or hardware?

Hard ware load balancers are specialized hardware deployed in-between server and the client. It can be a switching/routing hardware or even a dedicated system running a load balancing software with specialized capabilities.

When should I use network load balancer?

1. When you need to seamlessly support spiky or high-volume inbound TCP requests.
2. When you need to support a static or elastic IP address.
3. If you are using container services and/or want to support more than one port on an EC2 instance.

Why load balancer is required?

The main purpose of load balancing is to prevent any single server from getting overloaded and possibly breaking down. In other words, load balancing improves service availability and helps prevent downtimes.

When would you use a load balancer?

Load balancers are used to increase capacity (concurrent users) and reliability of applications. They improve the overall performance of applications by decreasing the burden on servers associated with managing and maintaining application and network sessions, as well as by performing application-specific tasks.

What is difference between NLB and ALB?

Key Differences

NLB just forward requests whereas ALB examines the contents of the HTTP request header to determine where to route the request. ... Generally a NLB determines availability based on the ability of a server to respond to ICMP ping, or to correctly complete the three-way TCP handshake.

Can Network Load Balancer terminate SSL?

TLS termination on Network Load Balancers also offers centralized deployment of SSL certificates by integrating with AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) and Identity Access Manager (IAM). ... You can also optionally configure encryption to the targets.

What are the types of load balancers in AWS?

Elastic Load Balancing supports the following types of load balancers: Application Load Balancers, Network Load Balancers, and Classic Load Balancers. Amazon ECS services can use these types of load balancer.

Is Kubernetes a load balancer?

In other words, Kubernetes services are themselves the crudest form of load balancing traffic. In Kubernetes the most basic type of load balancing is load distribution. Kubernetes uses two methods of load distribution. Both of them are easy to implement at the dispatch level and operate through the kube-proxy feature.

What are popular load balancers?

• Nginx.
• Avi Vantage Software Load Balancer.
• HAProxy.
• Kemp LoadMaster.
• Loadbalancer.org.
• ManageEngine OpManager.
• Citrix ADC.
• Barracuda Load Balancer ADC.

What load balancer does Facebook use?

The company has released Katran, the load balancer that keeps the company data centers from overloading, as open source under the GNU General Public License v2. 0 and available from GitHub.

How do I use a network load balancer?

1. On the navigation bar, choose a Region for your load balancer. Be sure to choose the same Region that you used for your EC2 instances.
2. In the navigation pane, under Load Balancing, choose Load Balancers.
3. Choose Create Load Balancer.
4. For Network Load Balancer, choose Create.

What is difference between L4 and L7?

L4 load balancing offers traffic management of transactions at the network protocol layer (TCP/UDP). ... L7 load balancing works at the highest level of the OSI model. L7 bases its routing decisions on various characteristics of the HTTP/HTTPS header, the content of the message, the URL type, and information in cookies.

Is Nginx L7 or L4?

Modern general-purpose load balancers, such as NGINX Plus and the open source NGINX software, generally operate at Layer 7 and serve as full reverse proxies.
