β-lactam antibiotics are antibiotics that contain a beta-lactam ring in their molecular structure. This includes penicillin derivatives, cephalosporins and cephamycins, monobactams, carbapenems and carbacephems.

What are beta-lactam antibiotics examples?

β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins, inhibit platelet aggregation responses, and some can induce a bleeding diathesis when given in high doses. These include carbenicillin, penicillin G, ticarcillin, ampicillin, nafcillin, cloxacillin, mezlocillin, oxacillin, and piperacillin.

Which antibiotics are beta-lactam antibiotics?

β-lactam antibiotics (beta-lactam antibiotics) are antibiotics that contain a beta-lactam ring in their molecular structure. This includes penicillin derivatives (penams), cephalosporins and cephamycins (cephems), monobactams, carbapenems and carbacephems.

What are beta-lactam antibiotics used for?

Beta-lactam antibiotics are used in the management and treatment of bacterial infections.

Why is it called beta-lactam?

A beta-lactam (β-lactam) ring is a four-membered lactam. A lactam is a cyclic amide, and beta-lactams are named so because the nitrogen atom is attached to the β-carbon atom relative to the carbonyl.

ß-Lactams: Mechanisms of Action and Resistance

Is amoxicillin a beta-lactam?

The activity of the beta-lactams: amoxicillin, ampicillin, piperacillin, and ticarcillin, can be restored and widened by combining them with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Clavulanic acid, sulbactam, and tazobactam are all beta-lactamase inhibitors.

Is azithromycin a beta-lactam?

Methods: Retrospective review of medical records of children evaluated at Texas Children's Hospital between 1996 and 2002 who had received antimicrobials (azithromycin or a beta-lactam antibiotic) and developed invasive pneumococcal disease within 30 days.

Are beta lactams bactericidal?

β-Lactam antibiotics have a β-lactam ring in their molecular structure (Figure 8-1). They include penicillins, cephalosporins, monobactams, and carbapenems. They are bactericidal antibiotics (see Chapter 6) that bind covalently to and inhibit penicillin binding proteins (PBPs).

Is penicillin a beta-lactam?

Beta-lactam antibiotics include penicillins, cephalosporins and related compounds. As a group, these drugs are active against many gram-positive, gram-negative and anaerobic organisms.

Are fluoroquinolones and quinolones the same thing?

There are several different types of antibiotics that may be used for various infections, but quinolones (also known as fluoroquinolones) are a type of infectious disease medication used primarily when there is a concern for multidrug resistance from other antibiotics.

Is Keflex a beta-lactam?

Cefalexin, also spelled cephalexin, is an antibiotic that can treat a number of bacterial infections. It kills gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria by disrupting the growth of the bacterial cell wall. Cefalexin is a beta-lactam antibiotic within the class of first-generation cephalosporins.

Is zosyn a beta-lactam?

Piperacillin-tazobactam is a beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combination with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity that includes Gram-positive and -negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Is ampicillin a beta-lactam?

β-Lactam Group of Antimicrobials

β-Lactam antibiotics include penicillins, oxacillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, carbpenicillin, and others.

What drug is aminoglycoside?

The aminoglycosides are broad-spectrum, bactericidal antibiotics that are commonly prescribed for children, primarily for infections caused by Gram-negative pathogens. The aminoglycosides include gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin, neomycin, and streptomycin.

What class is Clindamycin?

Clindamycin is in a class of medications called lincomycin antibiotics. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of bacteria.

Is ceftriaxone a beta-lactam?

Ceftriaxone (CEF) is a third generation cephalosporin, under the group of β-lactam antibiotics, and is the most frequently used drug for local (skin and soft tissue infections) as well as systemic community and hospital-acquired infections (Pinto Pereira et al., 2004).

What drug is a fluoroquinolone?

Fluoroquinolones are a class of antibiotics approved to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections. The fluoroquinolone antibiotics include ciprofloxacin (Cipro), gemifloxacin (Factive), levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), and ofloxacin (Floxin).

What are methicillin antibiotics?

Methicillin: A semisynthetic penicillin-related antibiotic, also known as Staphcillin, that once was effective against staphylococci (staph) resistant to penicillin because they produce the enzyme penicillinase. Rarely used now, methicillin has been largely superceded by Vancomycin.

Is bactrim a beta-lactam?

Augmentin and Bactrim are different types of antibiotics. Augmentin is a combination penicillin-type antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor and Bactrim is a combination of an anti-bacterial sulfonamide (a "sulfa" drug) and a folic acid inhibitor.

How do B lactams affect and destroy bacteria?

The β-lactams are bactericidal agents that kill bacteria by interrupting peptidoglycan (cell wall) biosynthesis. Their targets are penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that exhibit transglycosylase/transpeptidase or carboxypeptidase activities in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Is vancomycin a glycopeptide?

Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic primarily active against gram-positive bacteria. It also inhibits cell wall synthesis by binding to the bacterial d-Ala-d-Ala peptidoglycan binding site, preventing cross-linking and causing lysis.

Is vancomycin bacteriostatic or bactericidal?

While vancomycin is bactericidal against all susceptible Gram-positive pathogens it exerts only bacteriostatic activity against enterococci and needs to be combined with another agent, usually an aminoglycoside, to achieve bactericidal activity.

Is cefdinir a beta-lactam?

Cefdinir (Omnicef) and amoxicillin (Amoxil) are two antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Both drugs are part of a group of antibiotics called beta-lactams. They can treat a range of different infections such as respiratory tract infections, ear infections, and skin infections.

Which are macrolide antibiotics?

Macrolides are a class of antibiotic that includes erythromycin, roxithromycin, azithromycin and clarithromycin. They are useful in treating respiratory, skin, soft tissue, sexually transmitted, H. pylori and atypical mycobacterial infections.

Is Augmentin an antibiotic?

Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate) is a combination antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin.
