Scandium is mainly used for research purposes. It has, however, great potential because it has almost as low a density as aluminium and a much higher melting point. An aluminium-scandium alloy has been used in Russian MIG fighter planes, high-end bicycle frames and baseball bats.

What is scandium used for today?

Scandium is used in aluminum-scandium alloys for aerospace industry components and for sports equipment such as bicycle frames, fishing rods, golf iron shafts and baseball bats. Scandium iodide is used in mercury vapor lamps, which are used to replicate sunlight in studios for the film and television industry.

Is scandium used in medicine?

Scandium radionuclides have been identified in the late 1990s as promising for nuclear medicine applications, but have been set aside for about 20 years. Among the different isotopes of scandium, ⁴³Sc and ⁴⁴Sc are interesting for positron emission tomography imaging, whereas ⁴⁷Sc is interesting for therapy.

Why is scandium so expensive?

Owing to its scarcity and limited production, scandium is one of the most expensive of all the natural elements. ... During the rare earth shortage of 2010, the price for scandium metal soared from a few thousand US dollars to over US$ 15,000 per kilogram.

Is scandium stronger than titanium?

Scandium can be stiffer and lighter than titanium, but not as strong or durable.

Scandium - A Metal that Produces STRANGE SOUNDS!

How much is scandium worth?

Scandium is a soft, light metal that might have applications in the aerospace industry. With a cost of $270 per gram ($122,500 per pound), scandium is too expensive for widespread use.

Is scandium bad for humans?

Health effects of scandium

Scandium is mostly dangerous in the working environment, due to the fact that damps and gasses can be inhaled with air. This can cause lung embolisms, especially during long-term exposure. Scandium can be a threat to the liver when it accumulates in the human body.

Is titanium very reactive?

Although at room temperatures titanium is resistant to tarnishing, at elevated temperatures it reacts with oxygen in the air. ... In the liquid state, however, titanium is very reactive and reduces all known refractories.

Why is scandium used in baseball bats?

Scandium metal is lighter than most other metals. It is also resistant to corrosion (rusting) and has a high melting point. These properties make scandium alloys especially desirable for use in sporting equipment, such as baseball bats, lacrosse sticks, and bicycle frames.

What is an interesting fact about scandium?

Scandium has a higher melting point than aluminum while having nearly the same density. Scandium is considered a rare-earth element because it is often found in rare-earth ores. It also shares many of the same chemical properties of other rare-earths. Scandium is the 35th most abundant element in the Earth's crust.

How does scandium react with water?

Reaction of scandium with water

When finely divided, or heated, scandium metal dissolves in water to form solutions containing the aquated Sc(III) ion together with hydrogen gas, H₂.

Where is scandium mined in the world?

According to Minerals Education Coalition, scandium is mainly mined in China, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Norway and Russia with a good deal coming from Cold War-era stockpiles in the former Soviet Union (according to New World Encyclopedia).

What period is scandium in?

The period 4 transition metals are scandium (Sc), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn).

How do you speak scandium?

1. Break 'scandium' down into sounds: [SKAN] + [DEE] + [UHM] - say it out loud and exaggerate the sounds until you can consistently produce them.
2. Record yourself saying 'scandium' in full sentences, then watch yourself and listen.

How many ions does scandium have?

Why does Scandium only exist in the 3+ ion.

How many isotopes does scandium have?

In nature, scandium exists in the form of one stable isotope, scandium-45. Among 25 (excluding nuclear isomers) radioactive isotopes with masses ranging from 36 to 61, the most stable is scandium-46 (half-life of 83.79 days), and the least stable is scandium-39 (half-life of less than 300 nanoseconds).

Can yttrium be harmful?

Water soluble compounds of yttrium are considered mildly toxic, while its insoluble compounds are non-toxic. In experiments on animals, yttrium and its compounds caused lung and liver damage. ... Exposure to yttrium compounds in humans may cause lung disease.

What is scandium bike frame?

So-called "scandium" frames are aluminum alloy frames. The aluminum alloy used in their tubing has about 2% of scandium added to it to increase strength slightly. This allows a frame tube to be made slightly thinner, therefore weigh slightly less than a tube made from an aluminum alloy not containing scandium.

What country produces the most scandium?

Scandium was recovered from titanium, zirconium, cobalt, and nickel process streams. China, the Philippines, and Russia were the leading producers.

Is scandium a precious metal?

Scandium is perhaps the closest we come to a precious metal outside of proper precious metals. ... Despite being a useful metal with many desirable characteristics (lightweight yet high strength, resistance to corrosion, non-toxic, etc.) its rarity dooms its potential to all but very specific applications.

Does scandium have any supply issues?

Scandium fundamentals

Security of supply issues and a high cost of production have limited the growth of demand for scandium for many years, with the US Geological Survey estimating global supply and consumption to be about 15-20 tonnes per year.
