Asystole is a non-shockable rhythm. Therefore, if asystole is noted on the cardiac monitor, no attempt at defibrillation should be made. High-quality CPR should be continued with minimal (less than five seconds) interruption.
When can you defibrillate a patient?
Description. Defibrillation - is the treatment for immediately life-threatening arrhythmias with which the patient does not have a pulse, ie ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT).
What are the environmental considerations for safe and effective AED use?
Environmental Considerations
It is safe to use an AED when the person is lying on a metal surface, but don't allow the AED pads to contact the metal surface. Do not use an AED if the person is in or near water. Avoid getting the AED wet. It is safe to use AEDs in all weather conditions.
What are the risks of using a defibrillator?
Risks and potential complications include: Skin burns. Myocardial necrosis (death of heart muscle tissue) Other cardiac arrhythmias including asystole (no heart rhythm, or “flatline”), ventricular fibrillation after pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and other less serious arrhythmias.
What are some safety and maintenance considerations that are required for an AED?
Turn off the AED and make sure the status indicator light shows the AED is ready to be used. Confirm all parts are available and in good condition such as gloves, razor and breathing mask. Inspect the device itself for cracks, wear, and other signs of damage. Check the pads and make sure they are not expired.

When should you use an AED during CPR?
When is an AED needed? AEDs are used to revive someone from sudden cardiac arrest. This usually occurs when a disruption in the heart's electrical activity causes a dangerously fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia) or a fast and irregular heartbeat (ventricular fibrillation).
Can you use an AED on a conscious person?
If the person is conscious and breathing normally, they do not require an AED shock. Victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest may demonstrate agonal breathing for seconds to minutes after their heart has stopped beating.
Can you defibrillate in a moving ambulance?
Aim of the study: The available data suggest that automated external defibrillators (AED) can be safely used in vibration-like moving conditions such as rigid inflatable boats and aircraft environments.
Is it safe to use an AED on a patient who is pregnant?
CPR in a pregnant woman should be done in cycles of 30 compressions and two breaths. It is also safe to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED, if one is available. Bystanders should not be afraid they might hurt the unborn baby, Jeejeebhoy said.
Who can defibrillate in a hospital environment?
Anyone can use a defibrillator – they have verbal and visual instructions to guide people. A person cannot hurt someone by using a defibrillator. A defibrillator only shocks a person who is in cardiac arrest.
What happens if you get shocked by a defibrillator?
If it detects a life-threatening rapid heart rhythm, it tries to slow the rhythm to get it back to normal. If the dangerous rhythm does not stop, the ICD sends an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm. The device then goes back to its watchful mode.
Can you defibrillate a beating heart?
Defibrillators can also restore the heart's beating if the heart suddenly stops. Different types of defibrillators work in different ways. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which are in many public spaces, were developed to save the lives of people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
What happens if you accidentally get shocked by a defibrillator?
EFFECTS OF ACCIDENTAL SHOCK. Defibrillators are designed to affect electrical activity in the patient's heart, and potentially can affect the caregiver's heart as well. Earlier reports describe a tingling sensation and electrical burns in those who are shocked.

Atrial fibrillation occurs in the heart's upper two chambers, also known as the atria. Ventricular fibrillation occurs in the heart's lower two chambers, known as the ventricles. If an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) occurs in the atria, the word “atrial” will precede the type of arrhythmia.
Why is asystole not shockable?
Pulseless electrical activity and asystole or flatlining (3 and 4), in contrast, are non-shockable, so they don't respond to defibrillation. These rhythms indicate that the heart muscle itself is dysfunctional; it has stopped listening to the orders to contract.
