SIMPLE GUIDELINES. The ERV maintains fresh air in the home by bringing fresh air inside and exhausting stale air outside. ... To maintain air quality set the ERV controls to the intermittent on off cycle. This continuous intermittent setting should be maintained all year round.

How often should I run my ERV?

A typical ERV, though, can move 100 to 200 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air. A typical house needs maybe 50 cfm (depending on which ventilation standard you go by). What many designers do is set the ERV to run intermittently, say 20 minutes out of each hour, to meet the ventilation needs of the house.

Should ERV run in summer?

In summer, the heat and humidity are outside and your ERV will keep most of it from getting inside with your ventilation air. ... However, if you have air conditioning and the indoor air is cooler and dryer than the outside air, it is generally a good idea to run your ERV intermittently throughout the day.

Should I leave my HRV on all the time?

HRVs and ERVs do require energy to run, but this energy is offset by the heat recovered from the exhaust air. ... To ensure that you home is well-ventilated and maintains good air quality, your HRV and ERV should run continuously.

Does ERV save energy?

Because less energy is required to lower the temperature of dry air compared to moist air, an ERV can reduce the work your air conditioner needs to do and save you money. Moisture recovery: If your winter climate is extremely dry, ERVs recover some of the moisture that would leave your house through a regular HRV.

ERV/HRV vs Dehum - What’s the difference?

Does an ERV save money?

How Does an ERV Work? These devices use the already cooled indoor air to pre-condition the fresher, outdoor air in a heat exchanger. This process is called counter-flow heat exchange. This process can save a whopping 70-80% of the energy in the existing air while delivering it to the fresh air.

Should I run my HRV continuously in winter?

Therefore, the HRV should be shut off in warm weather, not cold, contrary to what your HVAC source has told you. ... If the HRV is running constantly, year-round, it's bringing in too much warm, moist air in the summer and too much cold air in the dead of winter, causing the furnace to run constantly.

Is it OK to run HVAC fan continuously?

Keeping your fan on AUTO is the most energy-efficient option. ... If your fan runs continuously, moisture does not have a chance to drip outside. It blows back into your home and your AC works hard to remove extra moisture from the air. You'll need to replace your furnace filter more frequently.

Should I turn off my HRV in the summer?

In a nutshell, you should shut off the HRV humidistatic control as soon as the furnace is not being used on the heat setting. ... The damp-feeling air and moisture on the windows in the summer months is proof that running the HRV unit at this time of year is detrimental.

Does ERV bring humidity?

An ERV will raise indoor humidity if outside relative humidity is higher since the exchange of water vapor between the two air streams is not equal. ERVs are not designed to remove moisture; they do not include settings to maintain and control relative humidity or even include drainage for collected condensate.

Does an ERV reduce humidity?

While similar to HRVs, ERVs also remove humidity from the air before it is brought into the home – greatly reducing cooling costs. ERV ventilation solutions are balanced, energy recovery ventilation systems, boasting the lowest operating cost of ventilation options.

Do I need a dehumidifier if I have an HRV?

If you ventilate with an HRV, supply-only, or exhaust-only ventilation sytem, you're bringing all the humidity in. The ERV brings in less but doesn't dehumidify. If you want to ventilate and dehumidify at the same time, you need some type of supplemental dehumidification, such as a ventilating dehumidifier.

Are ERV noisy?

The HRV/ERV unit itself could be causing a lot of noise, and even a perfect design and installation is not going to cover up a loud central unit. More often though sound issues arise from improper design and installation.

What is the purpose of an ERV?

ERV Ventilation Systems

But just what is an energy recovery ventilator? ERVs are systems designed to be connected to the ducts that are part of your HVAC system. By way of two fans, ERVs draw clean, fresh air into a home or office and remove stale air.

What is better HRV or ERV?

The best option between an HRV and an ERV depends on your climate and specific needs. If your house is too humid in winter (above 60% RH) then an HRV is the better choice, as it would surely get rid of excess humidity while an ERV would tend to keep it at a high level.

Can I leave my ceiling fan on 24 7?

Can I run a fan 24 7 and overnight? Yes, for nearly all household electric fans you can run them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ... If you're away from home, leaving the fan running won't help you stay cool unless it's ventilating hot air to the outside.

How long can an electric fan run continuously?

You can leave a fan running continuously for eight hours, on average, without worrying about unexpected ceiling damage or fires in your home.

How many minutes per hour should I run my HVAC fan?

Most systems should run about 2-3 cycles per hour. How long should the furnace or AC run in a given cycle? Typically 10-15 minutes in mild weather. The closer you get to the max design temperature in heating (0 Degrees) or cooling (90 Degrees) the longer the run cycle will be.

Do I need to run my air exchanger in the winter?

Should I Run The Air Exchanger During Winter? Every home is different depending on how much condensation builds up during the winter, Simple answer is yes. ... You'll want to set your Air exchanger to the proper humidity level for the winter.

Do I really need an HRV?

Do You Need an HRV or ERV System? For new construction, yes. A new home that meets current building codes or high-efficiency standards like Passive House should be quite airtight and needs an air ventilation system.

How can I lower the humidity in my house?

1. Use Your Air Conditioner. ...
2. Actively Use Your Exhaust/Ventilation Fans. ...
3. Take Cooler Showers. ...
4. Fix Any Leaking Pipes. ...
5. Keep Your Gutters Clean. ...
6. Dry Your Laundry Outside. ...
7. Get a Dehumidifier. ...
8. Move Your House Plants.

Are ERV worth it?

In sum, an ERV offers more consistent ventilation and better control over how much fresh air you're getting. It's also easier on your utility bills.

How long does an ERV last?

With minimal maintenance, a quality ERV should last more than 20 years. The main component which may need attention over the years would be the venting as it is typically flexible and soft.

Does an ERV cool?

The ERV will vent stale, but cool, air out of your home. As that air stream passes by the incoming fresh, but hot, air, it absorbs that air's heat, effectively pre-cooling it. Humidity is also balanced to optimize air quality.
