To check if the expansion tank is working properly, simply place your hand on the tank and feel its temperature. The top portion of the tank should feel warm to the touch, and the bottom portion of the tank should be room temperature.

Why is the water in my expansion tank hot?

Faulty coil in the hot water cylinder

Over time, this coil can become perforated, meaning there's hole in the coil which allows water for the central heating into the domestic hot water being stored in the cylinder. This rise in water levels can then lead to the feed and expansion tank overflowing.

How do you know if your expansion tank is bad?

If it makes a dull thud rather than a hollow sound, your tank is full of water and needs repair or replacement. You can also gauge this by feeling the tank, which will be cool where it's holding air and warm where it's holding water. If more than half the tank is warm, you have a problem.

Should an expansion tank be full of water?

If the tank is more than half full of water it is time to purge it. This is important because water does not allow the correct pressure for the boiler to work properly.

What happens if expansion tank pressure is too high?

If the psi is too high, you can simply let some air out by pressing down on the valve until enough air has escaped. If the psi is too low, you'll need to add some air with a tire pump. We highly recommend using a hand pump instead of an air compressor when adding air. An air compressor could easily rupture the bladder.

Water Heater and Expansion Tank Maintenence

What pressure should my hot water expansion tank be set at?

The recommended water pressure is between 50 and 60 PSI. Thermal Expansion Tanks contain an air bladder which is pressurized with air, and expands and contracts to absorb the expanded water from the water heater. needed. Check the air pressure in the Expansion Tank using a tire gauge.

Does expansion tank go on hot or cold?

Although expansion tanks can be installed on the hot side, we strongly recommend they be installed on the cold line, downstream of the shutoff valve.

How do you bleed an expansion tank?

1. Turn off the valve that auto-fills the system from your cold water line.
2. If you have one, open a valve or bleeder on the top of your expansion tank. ...
3. Open a drain valve and drain a suitable amount of water.
4. Close drain valve and re-open valve you closed in step 1.

Can an expansion tank explode?

As water heats up, it can expand dramatically, and if it's hot enough to turn into steam, this can add even more pressure to the water heater. If the relief valve is malfunctioning, this can lead to an explosion.

How often should I drain my expansion tank?

It cannot absorb as much pressure from the system and so the system PSI rises, possibly triggering the pressure relief valve. Draining the expansion tank should be done periodically, usually once or twice a year.

How does a hot water heater expansion tank work?

As hot water enters the heating system, the pressure in the system increases. As pressure increases, the diaphragm in the expansion tank is pushed down. This compresses the air in the tank, creating more space for excess water to enter.

Can a bad expansion tank cause water hammer?

An expansion tank contains a rubber bladder and compressed air that absorb the energy wave as water flows through a pipe. As this device cushions the shock wave, it prevents water hammer. ... After years of use, the expansion tank can fail as the rubber bladder bursts.

Should water tank in loft be covered?

The tank must be insulated and fitted with a dust proof lid. Pipes must be supported and lagged. There may be very good, and sometimes excessive, water pressure in the area resulting in more noise on filling.

What are the 2 water tanks in my loft for?

The Header Tank is the smaller of the two water tanks usually found in the loft, the larger one being the cold water storage tank. The header tank is used to fill the heating system and accommodate the expansion of water during the heating cycle.

Why is my overflow tank overflowing?

Coolant, or antifreeze, is essential to regulating the temperature of your vehicle. It's also extremely toxic and designed to stay inside a closed system. If you're seeing an overflow, it could be due to a radiator cap, thermostat, water pump, or radiator malfunction.

Why is my hot water so hot all of a sudden?

If your water heater is making hot water too hot all of a sudden, it's likely the result of the temperature setting being too high, a malfunctioning thermostat, high mineral content, or the pressure relief valve is blocked. Each of these issues can cause the water from the faucet to come out too hot.

What happens if expansion tank fails?

Oftenthe diaphragm dividing the two systems will fail, causing the two systems to become one. When this happens, the expansion tank turns into a “dead leg” that will eventually cause damage and premature failure to your water heater.

What causes an expansion tank to fail?

This can occur as a result of mineral deposits or other debris. Some older expansion tanks lack the internal bladders used in newer models. ... As a result, air can escape the tank and enter your system's water, which increases the risk of damage. When air enters the water's heating system, a loss of heat can also occur.

Do you bleed an expansion tank?

On a typical residential hot water heating system the system pressure in the boiler should be around 12 PSI when the system is cold. Take a look at the heating system pressures articles in the article index. You shouldn't be needing to bleed air when you drain the expansion tank.

How do you release air from an expansion tank?

Turn the boiler off, and wait a couple of hours to let the water cool down. Find the shutoff valve and the drain valve on the expansion tank. (The shutoff valve goes into the furnace; the drain valve is on the bottom of the tank.) Close the shutoff valve.

Why is expansion tank on cold side?

One expansion tank manufacturer states: “We recommend the cold water side installation because the tank is not insulated. When the expanded volume enters the tank, it will cool down. With the tank on the cold water side, this expanded volume will pass through the water heater before going out to the faucets.”

Where do you put the expansion tank on a water heater?

An expansion tank is generally installed directly above the water heater by means of a tee-fitting installed in the cold water delivery pipe. The expansion tank is usually installed horizontally, though it is acceptable to install it vertically if it is necessary because of space limitations.

How much air should be in an expansion tank?

Expansion tanks are pre-charged with a 40 PSI air charge. If the inlet water pressure is higher than 40 PSI,the expansion tank's air pressure must be adjusted to match that pressure but must not be higher than 80 PSI.
