Ytterbium forms both dihalides and trihalides with the halogens fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine.

Is francium a halogen?

Francium is an alkali metal whose chemical properties mostly resemble those of caesium. A heavy element with a single valence electron, it has the highest equivalent weight of any element.

What is the difference between yttrium and ytterbium?

As nouns the difference between ytterbium and yttrium

is that ytterbium is a metallic chemical element (symbol yb) with an atomic number of 70 while yttrium is a metallic chemical element (symbol y) with an atomic number of 39.

Is fluorine a metal or halogen?

Halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine) are nonmetal elements that are highly electronegative and reactive.

Is fluorine a halogen?

Group 7A (or VIIA) of the periodic table are the halogens: fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At). ... The halogens are extremely reactive (especially fluorine), and are not found naturally in their elemental forms.

Is fluorine a metal?

Fluorine (F) is the first element in the Halogen group (group 17) in the periodic table. ... It is the most electronegative element, given that it is the top element in the Halogen Group, and therefore is very reactive. It is a nonmetal, and is one of the few elements that can form diatomic molecules (F2).

Is ytterbium rare or common?

Ytterbium is the 44th most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It is one of the more common rare earths, present at about 2.7 to 8 parts per million in the crust. It is common in the mineral monazite.

Is ytterbium a metal nonmetal or metalloid?

Ytterbium is a bright, soft, silvery-white metal that is both ductile and malleable. It is a one of the rare earth metals. The metal tarnishes quickly in air and reacts slowly with water.

Is francium a metal?

francium (Fr), heaviest chemical element of Group 1 (Ia) in the periodic table, the alkali metal group.

Is francium a solid liquid or gas?

Francium is a chemical element with symbol Fr and atomic number 87. Classified as an alkali metal, Francium is a solid at room temperature.

Is ytterbium natural or synthetic?

It is a rare earth metal, which despite its name, does not mean that it is hard to find. Rare earth metals are really hard to separate from each other. That's why it took over 70 years to obtain a pure sample! Ytterbium has seven natural isotopes and twenty seven artificial isotopes.

What is made of ytterbium?

Ytterbium has few uses. It can be alloyed with stainless steel to improve some of its mechanical properties and used as a doping agent in fiber optic cable where it can be used as an amplifier. One of ytterbium's isotopes is being considered as a radiation source for portable X-ray machines.

What is special about ytterbium?

Ytterbium has a bright silvery luster, is soft, malleable, and quite ductile. One of the lanthanides, it is fairly stable in air but is readily attacked and dissolved by dilute and concentrated mineral acids and reacts slowly with water. Ytterbium occurs along with other rare earths in a number of rare minerals.

What are the main uses of ytterbium?

• Ytterbium clocks are the World's most stable atomic clock. ...
• It is used as a doping agent to improve the strength, grain refinement and mechanical properties of stainless steel.
• It also acts as an industrial catalyst.
• Few alloys of Ytterbium are used in dentistry.

Is ytterbium magnetic?

Ytterbium is weakly paramagnetic, having the lowest magnetic susceptibility of all the rare-earth metals. The periodic table is made up of 118 elements. ... Ytterbium is among the less-abundant rare earths.

What is ytterbium at room temperature?

Ytterbium is a chemical element with symbol Yb and atomic number 70. Classified as a lanthanide, Ytterbium is a solid at room temperature.

Is fluorine a non metal?

Since the noble gases are a special group because of their lack of reactivity, the element fluorine is the most reactive nonmetal. It is not found in nature as a free element. Fluorine gas reacts explosively with many other elements and compounds and is considered to be one of the most dangerous known substances.

Why is fluorine a non metal?

Answer: It has outermost electrons as 7, hence it prefers to gain one more electron to attain octet. Metals on the other hand, are ductile, malleable, conductors of heat and electricity etc. ... Hence, Fluorine is a non-metal.

What is fluorine in?

Fluorine (F) is the ninth element of the periodic table and was first isolated and identified in 1886 by a scientist named Moisson. ... Now we use fluorine in refrigerators, toothpaste, and rocket fuels. Located in the second period of the table (row 2), fluorine is the first element in the family of halogen gases.
