032"/1.02mm) copper wire solder provides the best color match on the market today. It melts and flows at 1460°F (793°C). It is a vast improvement over regular copper solder which is silver in color.

Does solder come in different colors?

Hard solder typically comes in "easy," "medium" and "hard" grades. ... Silver Solder Variety Pack Contains cadmium-free sheets of easy, medium and hard grade silver solder. Each grade melts at a different temperature. Use to solder complex pieces with many joints.

Is there a special solder for copper?

Types of Solder

Buy lead-free solder that's designed for copper water pipes; you'll find it in the plumbing section of the store. Solder with lead is still available, but the lead can leach into your water supply, so don't use it.

What solder is best for copper?

What Type of Solder is Used for Copper Pipe? Lead free solder is best for copper pipes carrying drinking water. It will be free of elements you don't want entering your drinking water. However it will require a higher melting point than a 50/50 solder.

Can you use a propane torch to solder copper pipe?

The torch needed for soldering copper can be propane or MAPP gas (methylacetylene-propadiene propane). ... Propane works fine, it just takes longer—which may work to your advantage if you are new to soldering copper and are working on 3/4-inch or 1/2-inch pipe. The choice of a torch is really up to you.

How to hide silver solder on copper.

What is copper solder?

Solder is a metal or metallic alloy used, when melted, to join metallic surfaces [source: Merriam-Webster]. ... When soldering copper, you must make sure the soldering material has a lower melting point than copper, or the tube will melt before the solder does [source: Solder Wire].

How do you solder copper patina?

1. After soldering, clean your piece with patina and flux remover. ...
2. When the piece is dry, mix a solution of 3 parts distilled water and 1 part ammonia. ...
3. Dry the piece with a paper towel. ...
4. Dip a paper towel into the patina and rub it all over the piece to cover the solder lines.

How can I change the color of metal?

Set your metal on a baking sheet. Use a heat gun to apply high-powered heat to your metal until it changes color. This method usually works best on such metals as copper, titanium and steel. For example, heat applied to copper can change its brassy orange finish to a dull red, purple or bluish white.

Is there brass colored solder?

The brass wire solder delivers an improved color match for yellow brass pieces, eliminating mismatched seams or being limited to cold connections. This solder contains approximately 38% silver.

Can you use silver solder on copper?

The amount of zinc in a metal lowers the melting point, that's why brass melts at a lower temperature than pure copper. As you can see in the chart above, you can use any silver solder on copper or brass metal, but solder flow points vary between vendors so always check the flow points of the solders you choose to use.

Can you solder bronze to copper?

If the proper procedures are followed, especially in the preheating and heating process, consistent, high-quality solder joints can easily be achieved between copper tube and new, no-lead copper alloy (brass or bronze) fittings/components.

Can you braze copper with a propane torch?

You'll use a torch for brazing just as for soldering.

Because brazing involves higher temperatures than soldering, using an oxygen-acetylene torch is your surest bet because this gets hotter than a MAPP gas or propane torch, although for most small-to-medium jobs (thinner copper piping) a turbo torch should also work.

How do you make solder look old?

Things You'll Need:

Pour a small quantity of lemon (or lime) juice into a small cup. Use a hairdryer to warm to soldered joint. Do not hold the hairdryer still in an attempt to soften the solder; simply get the solder warm. Dip a small paint brush into your lemon (or lime) juice and paint it onto the warm solder.

Can you use copper wire to solder?

Soldering copper is a fairly easy task for the homeowner to complete, providing that they follow a few simple instructions. Begin by laying out all the items containing copper wire that you wish to solder; plug in your soldering iron to let it heat up and put on all the necessary safety gear.

Is there different types of solder?

In summary, there are three main types of solder: lead-based, lead-free, and flux. Lead-based solders are the best understood, are reliable, and preferred in mission critical applications such as aerospace or medical electronics.

Do you need flux to solder copper?

Strong metals such as brass and copper will require a synthetic acid flux in order to be soldered. This will remove not only oxidation but also corrosion and other residues that build up on these metals.

Will a propane torch melt solder?

I used a common everyday, readily available propane torch to solder the copper tubing together. You can get a cylinder of propane and the torch at any big box home improvement or hardware store. I picked up a kit that also has solder, flux and a little flux brush for around $20.

Can you use too much flux when soldering?

Although there is a sufficient amount of flux present in the core of the solder wire to get your job done, the technicians (to make their job easy) tend to use additional flux in form of paste or liquid during the rework on the PCB. There is no problem with the use of flux during soldering.

What flux is used for soldering copper?

Superior No. 135 is a rosin/petrolatum soldering flux paste ideal for use with copper. The petrolatum helps protect the solder joint against attack, and the rosin leaves a protective coating over the solder area after soldering.

Can you use acid core solder on copper?

Acid core is NEVER used for electical connections. They REQUIRE "rosin core", otherwise they will corrode and lose conductivity. You cannot use ANY core solder to make copper pipe connections. If it is just a small can of flux, toss it and buy a new one when you need to make some joints.
