view gemstone encyclopedia Tantalite is too dark to be of use as a faceted gem but is sometimes cut as a collector curiosity, either faceted or in cabochons. These could be of any desired size.

Is tantalite a mineral?

The mineral group tantalite [(Fe, Mn)Ta₂O₆] is the primary source of the chemical element tantalum. It is chemically similar to columbite, and the two are often grouped together as a semi-singular mineral called coltan or "columbite-tantalite" in many mineral guides.

What ore is tantalite?

Tantalite, tantalum-rich variety of the mineral columbite (q.v.) with the chemical formula (Fe,Mn)(Ta,Nb)₂O₆. Tantalite is the principal ore of the metal tantalum.

What is the difference between tantalite and tantalum?

As nouns the difference between tantalite and tantalum

is that tantalite is (mineralogy) a dark-brown mineral that is an ore of tantalum and niobium, of the chemical formula (fe]], mn) ta₂[[oxygen|o₆ while tantalum is a metallic chemical element (symbol ta) with an atomic number of 73.

What is tantalite stone?

Tantalite 1

What is tantalite used for?

What is tantalite use for?

Tantalite is the most widespread tantalum mineral and makes for an important ore of the industrially useful metal. Tantalum is used in alloys for strength and higher melting points, in glass to increase the index of refraction, and in surgical steel, as it is non-reactive and non-irritating to body tissues.

How do you identify tantalite?

Tantalite Information

Very large crystals weighing many pounds have been found. The material is usually dark colored, opaque, and of interest only for cabochons. (Fe,Mn)(Nb,Ta)₂O₆. Black, brownish black, reddish brown; may tarnish iridescent.

What does coltan look like?

Coltan (short for columbite–tantalites and known industrially as tantalite) is a dull black metallic ore from which the elements niobium and tantalum are extracted. The niobium-dominant mineral in coltan is columbite (after niobium's original American name columbium), and the tantalum-dominant mineral is the tantalite.

What is coltan worth?

1kg costs around $100, but prices have historically been as high as $600 per kg. A Congolese Coltan miner can earn up to $200 per month.

Where is tantalite mined?

Most tantalum is mined in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), areas known for issues related to conflict minerals. Together they account for around 60 percent of global production. Nigeria, Brazil and China were the other top countries for tantalum mining in 2017.

Where is tantalite found in Nigeria?

It can be found in some states in Nigeria in traces, small and huge deposits such as; Nasarawa, Kogi, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, and Cross Rivers. Tantalite is the principal ore of tantalum.

Where is tantalite found in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe has tantalite deposits in Seke communal lands, Marondera, Mberengwa, Murehwa, Mutoko, Masvingo, and Buhera. The mineral is often smuggled to the DRC for sale.

What element family is tantalum?

Tantalum is a transition metal in Group 5 (VB) of the periodic table. The periodic table is a chart that shows how chemical elements are related to one another. Tantalum is one of the most inert metals known.

What type of rock is monazite?

Monazite is a rare phosphate mineral with a chemical composition of (Ce,La,Nd,Th)(PO₄,SiO₄). It usually occurs in small isolated grains, as an accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granite, pegmatite, schist, and gneiss.

What is coltan English?

: a dull black ore that consists of a mixture of columbite and tantalite and is a minor source of tantalum.

How do you extract coltan?

Coltan is mined by hand in the Congo. Their methods are very similar to how gold was mined in California during the 1800s. Groups of men dig basins in streams by scraping off the surface mud to get the Coltan below.

Does Apple use coltan?

Apple believes it constitutes a “downstream” company in that Apple or its suppliers purchase cassiterite, columbite-tantalite (coltan), wolframite, gold, or their derivatives, which presently are limited to tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold (collectively “3TG”) -related materials after processing by smelters or ...

What is tantalite concentrate?

Tantalum concentrate is one of the primary feed sources used by processors to produce tantalum capacitor powders and metallurgical products. The concentrate is also used to produce pure tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) primarily utilized in the production of optical glass and lithium niobate.

What is feldspar used for?

The term feldspar encompasses a whole range of materials. Most of the products we use on a daily basis are made with feldspar: glass for drinking, glass for protection, fiberglass for insulation, the floor tiles and shower basins in our bathrooms, and the tableware from which we eat. Feldspar is part of our daily life.

Is niobium very reactive?

Apart from reacting with oxygen in air at high temperatures, niobium is reactive to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and halogens. Niobium is non-reactive to acids and moisture at room temperatures but reacts with acids at elevated temperatures.

Why is tantalum called tantalum?

Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. Closely associated with niobium in ores and in properties, tantalum was discovered (1802) by the Swedish chemist Anders Gustaf Ekeberg and named after the mythological character Tantalus because of the tantalizing problem of dissolving the oxide in acids.
