Rickets is a bone disorder caused by a deficiency of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate. Rickets leads to softening and weakening of the bones and is seen most commonly in children 6-24 months of age.

Is osteomalacia a primary deficiency?

Osteomalacia refers to a marked softening of your bones, most often caused by severe vitamin D deficiency. The softened bones of children and young adults with osteomalacia can lead to bowing during growth, especially in weight-bearing bones of the legs. Osteomalacia in older adults can lead to fractures.

What deficiency is rickets?

Lack of vitamin D and calcium

The most common cause of rickets is a lack of vitamin D or calcium in a child's diet. Both are essential for children to develop strong and healthy bones.

Is rickets a nutritional deficiency?

It happens when the bones can not take up enough calcium and phosphorus to make hard, healthy bone. Although there are genetic and metabolic causes of rickets, the most common cause is a lack of vitamin D. This is also called nutritional rickets.

How is rickets classified?

Rickets can be diagnosed based on history and physical examination, radiological features, and biochemical tests. It can be classified into 2 major groups based on phosphate or calcium levels: phosphopenic and calcipenic.

What means rickets?

Listen to pronunciation. (RIH-kets) A condition in children in which bones become soft and deformed because they don't have enough calcium and phosphorus. It is caused by not having enough vitamin D in the diet or by not getting enough sunlight.

What are the two types of rickets?

There are several subtypes of rickets, including hypophosphatemic rickets (vitamin-D-resistant rickets), renal or kidney rickets (renal osteodystrophy), and most commonly, nutritional rickets (caused by dietary deficiency of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate).

Can babies be born with rickets?

Vitamin D is essential for the formation of strong and healthy bones in children. In rare cases, children can be born with a genetic form of rickets. It can also develop if another condition affects how vitamins and minerals are absorbed by the body. Read more about the causes of rickets.

Is rickets genetically inherited?

Hypophosphatemic rickets is almost always hereditary and may be caused by mutations in any of several genes . The specific gene involved determines the way it is inherited . Most commonly, it is caused by a mutation in the PHEX gene.

Why is rickets uncommon in the US?

Rickets is rare in the United States. It is most likely to occur in children during periods of rapid growth. This is the age when the body needs high levels of calcium and phosphate.

Is caused by deficiency of vitamin D?

Severe lack of vitamin D causes rickets, which shows up in children as incorrect growth patterns, weakness in muscles, pain in bones and deformities in joints. This is very rare. However, children who are deficient in vitamin D can also have muscle weakness or sore and painful muscles.

Where is rickets most common?

Rickets is more common in regions of Asia where there is pollution and a lack of sunlight and/or low intake of meat due to a vegetarian diet. The Middle East is a region where Vitamin D deficiency rickets is prevalent due to lack of exposure to the sun because of cultural practices (purdah).

Does my child have rickets?

What are the symptoms of rickets? Young babies with rickets can be fussy and have soft skulls. Infants and toddlers may not develop, walk, or grow well. Older children may have bone pain and bowed legs, or their wrists and knees may get wider.

Is vitamin D deficiency primary or secondary?

Vitamin D deficiency is most often caused by insufficient exposure to sunlight and nutritional deficiency but can be secondary to a wide range of other underlying causes, such as disorders of the gut, pancreas, liver and kidney.

What is a primary deficiency of vitamin D?

In adults, prolonged deficiency of vitamin D (calciferol) can lead to osteomalacia, while lesser deficiency (insufficiency) is associated with various non-specific symptoms. Both vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are becoming more common in developed countries.

What is the difference between rickets and osteomalacia?

Rickets can cause bowing of the legs and bone pain. It can also increase a child's risk of fracture (broken bone). Osteomalacia affects both children and adults and is a disease in which the bones don't contain enough bone mineral (mostly calcium and phosphate).

Is rickets a dominant or recessive trait?

Vitamin D-dependent rickets is almost always inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern , which means both copies of the respective gene in each cell have mutations.

Is rickets a metabolic disease?

Rickets is a metabolic bone disease that develops as a result of inadequate mineralization of growing bone due to disruption of calcium, phosphorus and/or vitamin D metabolism. Nutritional rickets remains a significant child health problem in developing countries.

Can rickets be passed on?

One form of rickets can be inherited. This means that the disorder is passed down through your genes. This type of rickets, called hereditary rickets, prevents your kidneys from absorbing phosphate.

How common is rickets in breastfed babies?

Vitamin D deficiency rickets among breastfed infants is rare, but it can occur if an infant does not receive additional vitamin D from foods, a vitamin D supplement, or adequate exposure to sunlight.

What is the disease called scurvy?

Scurvy is the name for a vitamin C deficiency. It can lead to anemia, debility, exhaustion, spontaneous bleeding, pain in the limbs, and especially the legs, swelling in some parts of the body, and sometimes ulceration of the gums and loss of teeth.

What is neoplastic rickets?

Abstract. Oncogenic or tumor-induced osteomalacia-rickets is a syndrome characterized by hypophosphatemia, renal phosphate wasting, and decreased serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 levels. The tumors secrete a phosphaturic substance that causes total body phosphate depletion, leading to osteomalacia or rickets.

What is the difference between vitamin D deficiency rickets?

Your child's body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphorus from food. Rickets can occur if your child's body doesn't get enough vitamin D or if his or her body has problems using vitamin D properly. Occasionally, not getting enough calcium or lack of calcium and vitamin D can cause rickets.

Can rickets cause seizures?

Complications. In the short-term, severely low calcium levels in the blood can lead to cramps, seizures, and breathing problems. In severe cases, untreated, long-term nutritional rickets can increase the risk of: bones that break easily.

What is congenital rickets?

Congenital rickets is the term given to fetus born with clinical features of rickets, but those born with biochemical evidence of rickets without obvious clinical features still can be considered occult congenital rickets.
