Nitride significantly increases the barrel life and corrosion resistance of “stainless” (which for barrel stainless steel is not rust-proof). Which is less expensive? Nitride is significantly less expensive and less time-consuming for making barrels.

Is a stainless steel barrel better than nitride?

Nitride creates a very hard surface. It will be more scratch resistant , slicker and foul less. If you shoot a lot the barrel will last longer but in the heat/velocity range of a muzzle loader you would need to shoot an astronomical amount to burn out a barrel.

Is nitride a good finish?

Both are excellent finishes that are very hard, smooth and high performing. DLC outperforms nitride by about the same amount that nitride outperforms phosphate. This is on the basis of hardness and corrosion resistance. ... On the basis of bang for the buck, nitride wins.

How many rounds will a nitride barrel last?

The nitrided barrels lasted an average of 28,000 shots before rejection.

Do stainless steel barrels last longer?

The big enemy to barrel life is heat.

A barrel looses most of its accuracy due to erosion of the throat area of the barrel. ... And stainless steel barrels will last longer than chrome-moly barrels. This is due to the ability of stainless steel to resist heat erosion better than the chrome-moly steel.

Stainless Steel vs. Nitrided Steel for Handpans- Which Should You Choose?

What is the best AR barrel material?

So, which steel is the best AR-15 barrel material then? Some manufacturers prefer to use 4140 or 4150 steel while others prefer to use 416 SS or 416R steel for its properties. Some other manufacturers prefer to chrome-line the inside of their AR barrels and some do not.

Are chrome lined barrels less accurate?

There are many people who argue that chrome lined barrels are less accurate than an otherwise identical steel barrel. All things being equal, this is true, but for most shooters, the degree to which accuracy is lost by using a chrome-lined barrel is generally unnoticeable.

What is salt bath nitride?

How salt bath nitriding works. The hallmark of salt bath nitriding is the bath of molten salt (usually cyanide or other salts) into which parts are submerged. The method features the transfer via diffusion of carbon and nitrogen from the molten salt to the surface of a steel part.

Is Cerakote better than nitride?

The Traditions™ Performance Firearms barrel protected by Cerakote took 150x longer to show visible signs of corrosion than the barrel treated with Black Nitride Rust Proofing by CVA®. This test video shows that when corrosion protection matters, Cerakote outlasts and outperforms, making it the obvious choice.

Can you nitride stainless steel?

Because of their chro- mium content, all stainless steels can be nitrided to some degree [9]. However, the high chromium content of some stainless steels makes them more difficult to nitride. This is because chromium forms a passive layer on the stainless steel surface, which has to be removed before nitriding.

What does nitride coating do?

Titanium nitride (TiN) coating is wear resistant, inert and reduces friction. Use it on cutting tools, punches, dies and injection mold components to improve tool life two to ten times, or more, over uncoated tools.

Can you black nitride stainless steel?

BLACK NITRIDE AND DRY TO TOUCH OIL( BN )

Applicable to steel and stainless steel only. Parts are heat treated to give them a thin, hard, durable case with a dark brown to black color.

Is black nitride good?

A black nitride surface is very corrosion resistant, it doesn't corrode underneath as chroming or rust through as parkerizing does and is very durable. It is NOT black paint or a surface coating.

Are stainless steel barrels more accurate?

Over 90% of high-grade match barrels are made from Stainless Steel. Stainless is easier to machine because it is slightly softer. ... That said, chrome-moly barrels can be just as accurate, when made correctly, and there is evidence a chrome-moly barrel will hold its accuracy longer than a stainless barrel.

Are titanium nitride barrels good?

It is extremely thin (<0.0002") and will not interfere with the fit of firearm parts. The primary benefits are increased hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and reduced surface friction. Normal oiling/greasing procedures should be followed, as well as proper maintenance to prevent corrosion.

What is the advantage of a chrome lined barrel?

While chrome lining offers superior corrosion resistance to various external weather conditions, it also serves to significantly reduce throat erosion, allowing shooters to enjoy sub-MOA accuracy potential for as much as 20,000 rounds of normal use with factory match ammunition.

What is the most durable gun finish?

Black Oxide (Bluing)

As one of the least expensive corrosion-resistant finishes on the market, black oxide is often the preferred finish used on gun barrels and small components. Gun oil is important to this type of finish to avoid rusting. Methods used are either a hot or cold process.

What is better than Cerakote?

GunKote is the biggest competition for Cerakote; each have their own following for being “the best” firearm coating, and both are comparable when tested against corrosion, chemicals, and durability. KG Gunkote also has two series, the 2400 Series (Oven Cure), and the 1200 Air Cure Series.

How hard is nitride coating?

Titanium Nitride is an extremely hard, inert, thin film coating that is applied primarily to precision metal parts. Titanium Nitride (TiN) is the most common PVD hard coating in use today. TiN has an ideal combination of hardness, toughness, adhesion and inertness.

Does nitriding add thickness?

During nitriding the volume of the component increases by 3% of the layer thickness.

What is black nitride?

Black Nitride, or Ferritic Nitrocarburizing, is the thermochemical that simultaneously diffuses nitrogen and carbon into the surface of ferrous metals. During the process, a two-part surface layer is formed, an outer iron nitride layer with a nitrogen diffusion layer below it.

Is Melonite and nitride the same?

Nitride is a treatment to the barrels steel that hardens the steel and significantly increases corrosion and wear resistance. ... Melonite is a specific version of Nitride but for the most part Melonite and Nitride are the same.

Are LWRC barrels chrome lined?

Each barrel is manufactured out of 41V45 steel alloy treated with NiCorr™ surface conversion technology. ... Our NiCorr™ surface conversion is permanently lubricious, harder wearing, more heat and corrosion resistant than hard chrome barrel surfaces.
