Metameric segmentation or metamerism is the condition where an animal's body (except at the head region) is divided into a number of compartments (segments or metameres) each containing the same organs. ... are repeated in each segment. Metamerism is absent in echinoderms, molluscs and platyhelminthes.

Is segmentation present in Mollusca?

The phylum Mollusca is the second most diverse phylum after Arthropoda with over 110,000 described species. Mollusks may be primitively segmented, but all but the monoplacophorans characteristically lack segmentation and have bodies that are to some degree spirally twisted (e.g. torsion).

What animals show Metamerism?

Metamerism is the repetition of homologous body segments. This type of development can be seen in the Annelids, which include earthworms, leeches, tubeworms, and their relatives. It is also seen in a more advanced form in the Arthropods, such as crustaceans, insects, and their relatives.

What phylum is Metamerism found in?

Metamerism is demonstrated by organisms of phylum Annelida, Arthropoda and Chordata. Their architectural body plan exhibits serial repetition of similar body segments and organ systems.

What is the difference between Mollusca and Annelida?

Mollusks are invertebrates such as snails, scallops, and squids. ... Different classes of mollusks have different ways of obtaining food. Annelids are segmented worms such as earthworms and leeches. Annelids have a coelom, closed circulatory system, excretory system, and complete digestive system.

Do Mollusca have appendages?

Mollusks are the soft-bodied invertebrates with one or two shells, whereas arthropods are the invertebrates with segmented bodies, jointed legs and appendages. ... That is; unlike arthropods, some mollusk species have a muscular foot for locomotion. In contrast, arthropods like insects have wings to fly.

Is Mollusca Metameric?

Metamerism is absent in echinoderms, molluscs and platyhelminthes.

Is metamerism found in Arthropoda?

These compartments are called segments or somites or metameres. The Linear arrangement of segments one behind the other is called Metamerically segmented. Example :- Annelida, Arthropoda & Chordata . True Metamerism is found in Annelids, Arthropods & Chordates.

Which of the following feature is not present in the phylum Arthropoda?

Thus, the correct answer is Parapodia which is not present in the Phylum-Arthropoda.

Is metamerism present in chordates?

The term metamerism refers to a linear repetition of parts in an animal body. It occurs in three highly organized phyla : Annelida, Arthropoda and Chordata.

Which animal has no segmentation?

Enoplea belongs to the phylum Nematoda, which are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic, cylindrical and unsegmented.

Is metamerism present in human body?

Meaning of Metamerism:

The animals which exhibit such features called metamerically segmented. Structurally each meta-mere or somite is constructed on the basis of some fundamental plan and usually possesses a part of almost all the body systems.

Is segmentation and metamerism same?

Segmentation, also called metamerism, or metameric segmentation, in zoology, the condition of being constructed of a linear series of repeating parts, each being a metamere (body segment, or somite) and each being formed in sequence in the embryo, from anterior to posterior.

Does Mollusca have Metameric segmentation?

Metameric segmentation is absent in platyhelminthes, Echinodermata, Mollusca etc. Metameric segmentation is the characteristic of Annelida (e.g., earthworm) and Arthropoda (e.g. Cockroach).

Which of the following does not belong to phylum Mollusca?

Trematoda do not belong to phylum Mollusca It is a class of phylum Platyhelminthes.

What class is Mollusca in?

The Class Gastropoda (in Phylum Mollusca) includes the groups pertaining to snails and slugs. The majority of gastropods have a single, usually spirally, coiled shell into which the body can be withdrawn.

Which is absent in Arthropoda?

In arthropods, segmentation is absent Externally. Note: Inside the arthropods, the body wall, anxious gadget, kidneys, muscle mass, and body cavity normally are segmented, as essentially are the appendages subtly.

Do arthropods have jointed appendages?

All arthropods have jointed appendages. ... There are over three times as many species of arthropods as there are of all other animals on Earth, and there may be millions more that we haven't even discovered. Arthropods do everything with legs or modified legs.

Which one of the following is of phylum Arthropoda?

Many familiar species belong to the phylum Arthropoda—insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, and millipedes on land; crabs, crayfish, shrimp, lobsters, and barnacles in water (Fig. 3.72). Arthropods are considered the most successful animals on Earth.

What is the difference between Pseudometamerism and true Metamerism?

Metamerism is the "segmentation of body into somites". Pseudometamerism takes place in cestodes in which every sections is independent of the other and encomprises complete set of organs that have no connection with organs in other segments.

What is Pseudometamerism?

Pseudometamerism or strobilization is seen in tapeworms where segmentation of the body takes place by the segmentation of the ectoderm. The body consists of a number of segments or proglottids which varies in different individuals of the same species. Pseudometamerism occurs in Cestoda tapeworms.

Does tapeworm show Pseudometamerism?

An example of pseudometamerism is in the class Cestoda. The tapeworm is composed of many repeating segments - primarily for reproduction and basic nutrient exchange. ... The circular muscles work to allow the segments to elongate one by one, and the longitudinal muscles then work to shorten the elongated segments.

Are all molluscs Cephalized?

Both flatworms and molluscs are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetric, and cephalized. But molluscs have developed a true coelom, an internal body cavity enclosed by mesodermal membranes. ... Molluscs are mostly aquatic, and are named from the Latin molluscus, meaning "soft".

What type of exoskeleton do some molluscs present?

What type of exoskeleton do some molluscs present? Some molluscs, such as bivalves and gastropods, secrete an external calcareous shell. Calcium carbonate is secreted by the mantle, a fold in the epidermis, forming the shell. ... In gastropods, the shell only contains the visceral mass.

Does Mollusca have Cephalization?

most molluscs have a well developed cephalization. ... most others ( think clam ) are grazers, scavengers, or cephalization.
