lutetium (Lu), chemical element, a rare-earth metal of the lanthanide series of the periodic table, that is the densest and the highest-melting rare-earth element and the last member of the lanthanide series. In its pure form, lutetium metal is silvery white and stable in air.

Is niobium a metal nonmetal or metalloid?

Niobium, also known as columbium, is a chemical element with the symbol Nb (formerly Cb) and atomic number 41. Niobium is a light grey, crystalline, and ductile transition metal. Pure niobium has a Mohs hardness rating similar to that of pure titanium, and it has similar ductility to iron.

What is lutetium made of?

Pure lutetium metal is produced by the reduction of the anhydrous fluoride with calcium metal. Isotopes: Lutetium has 35 isotopes whose half-lives are known, with mass numbers 150 to 184. Naturally occurring lutetium is a mixture of two isotopes ¹⁷⁵Lu and ¹⁷⁶Lu with natural abundances of 97.4% and 2.6% respectively.

Is lutetium a transition metal or lanthanide?

Lutetium ( IPA: /l(j)uːˈtiːʃiəm/) is a chemical element with the symbol Lu and atomic number 71. A metallic element of the transition metal group, lutetium usually occurs in association with yttrium and is sometimes used in metal alloys and as a catalyst in various processes.

Is lutetium an actinide?

TRANSITION ELEMENTS

The elements from lanthanum, ₅₇La, through lutetium, ₇₁Lu, are collectively called the lanthanides, or the rare earth elements. ... The elements from actinum, ₈₉Ac, through lawrencium, ₁₀₃Lr, are collectively called the actinides.

Is arsenic a metal or nonmetal?

1.2.

Arsenic (atomic number, 33; relative atomic mass, 74.92) has chemical and physical properties intermediate between a metal and a non-metal, and is often referred to as a metalloid or semi-metal. It belongs to Group VA of the Periodic Table, and can exist in four oxidation states: –3, 0, +3, and +5.

Is HF a element or compound?

Hafnium is a chemical element with symbol Hf and atomic number 72. Classified as a transition metal, Hafnium is a solid at room temperature.

Is niobium an element?

Niobium is a chemical element with symbol Nb and atomic number 41. Classified as a transition metal, Niobium is a solid at room temperature.

What is niobium steel?

It is a soft, grey ductile transition metal. The main commercial source for niobium is the mineral pyrochlore. ... Niobium was first used commercially in the early 20th Century to replace tungsten in tool steel production; since then, it has become a key element in the production of modern engineering materials.

Is niobium a cation or anion?

potassium; niobium(+5) cation; oxygen(-2) anion.

Is hafnium a metal?

A shiny, silvery metal that resists corrosion and can be drawn into wires. Hafnium is a good absorber of neutrons and is used to make control rods, such as those found in nuclear submarines. ... Hafnium has been successfully alloyed with several metals including iron, titanium and niobium.

What is EU in the periodic table?

europium (Eu), chemical element, a rare-earth metal of the lanthanide series of the periodic table.

Is H2 a compound or element?

H2, is an elemental gas with an atomic mass of 1.00794. This diatomic molecule is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. It is also colorless, odorless, and highly flammable. Hydrogen; Hydrogen, H2, is the most abundant element in the universe.

Is thallium a metal?

DESCRIPTION: Thallium was discovered by Sir William Crookes in 1861. It is a soft, heavy, inelastic metal. Thallium is tasteless and odorless and has been used by murderers as a difficult to detect poison. It is found in trace amounts in the earth's crust.

Is H a metal or nonmetal?

Hydrogen is a nonmetal and is placed above group in the periodic table because it has ns¹ electron configuration like the alkali metals. However, it varies greatly from the alkali metals as it forms cations (H⁺) more reluctantly than the other alkali metals.

Why is arsenic a metalloid?

Arsenic is the third element in the fifteenth column of the periodic table. It is classified as a metalloid because it has some properties similar to a metal and others of a non-metal. Arsenic atoms have 33 electrons and 33 protons with 5 valence electrons in the outer shell. Arsenic exists in a number of allotropes.

Is strontium a transition metal?

Sr is in group 2. Sr is therefore classified as an Alkali Earth Metal, and is not considered a transition metal.
