Imidazole is an aromatic ring found in many biological molecules. One of its nitrogen atoms resembles that of pyrrole, and is not basic. The second nitrogen atom, which is structurally similar to the nitrogen atom of pyridine, acts as a base. However, imidazole is about 100 times more basic than pyridine.

Is imidazole a good base?

Amphoterism. Imidazole is amphoteric. That is, it can function as both an acid and as a base. As an acid, the pK_a of imidazole is 14.5, making it less acidic than carboxylic acids, phenols, and imides, but slightly more acidic than alcohols.

Is imidazole a strong Nucleophile?

Nitrogen is a better electron donor than carbon and thus is more nucleophilic. Imidazole is an N-nucleophile. Depending on the amount of alkylating agent, its reactivity and additional base added (imidazole is a base by itself) you can get a wild mixture of products.

Is imidazole a stronger base than pyrrole?

Imidazole is over a million times more basic than pyrrole because the sp² nitrogen that is part of one double bond is structurally similar to pyridine, and has a comparable basicity.

Is imidazole more basic than pyrazole?

Pyrazole is a weaker base than Imidazole. This is due to the sp2 orbital of nitrogen is the site of protonation in both pyrazole and imidazole. The nitrogen atom bonded to hydrogen is not basic because its lone pair of electrons is part of the aromatic ring system.

BASIC STRENGTH OF PYRROLE, PYRAZOLE AND IMIDAZOLE

Why imidazole is more basic than imidazole?

Aromaticity and resonance

In this case imidizole, has aromatic 5-membered rings with six π electrons (Hückel rule). The situation is slightly different in imidazoline, as it has one lacking π bond and the system is not aromatic and thus no greater room for stabilisation due to delocalisation and hence more basic.

Why is imidazole a weak base?

Imidazole is an aromatic ring found in many biological molecules. One of its nitrogen atoms resembles that of pyrrole, and is not basic. The second nitrogen atom, which is structurally similar to the nitrogen atom of pyridine, acts as a base. However, imidazole is about 100 times more basic than pyridine.

Which of the following is the strongest base?

-Hence Benzyl amine is the strongest base among given compounds.

What is the basicity order of pyrrole pyridine and imidazole and why?

Pyridinium cation has only one nitrogen to stabilize the positivecharge. Thus imidazolium cation is more stable than pyridinium cation. In other words, imidazole is more basic than pyridine. Answer: The order of increasing basicity is: pyrrole, pyridine, imidazole, piperidine, pyrrolidine.

Which is more acidic imidazole or pyrrole?

The pKa of imidazole itself is 14.2, about three order of magnitude lower than the pKa of pyrrole (pKa = 17.5). This is due to the extra N atom in imidazole which is electron- withdrawing and thus stabilizes the negative charge in the conjugate base.

Is imidazole a reducing agent?

Nontoxic reducing agent imidazole is used to produce NrGO-90 from GO in basic condition at low temperature.

What are imidazole derivatives?

Many imidazole-based derivatives have been marketed as antifungal drugs such as ketoconazole (1), miconazole (2), clotrimazole (3), tioconazole (4), econazole (5), tinidazole (6), enilconazole/imazalil (7), parconazole (8), eberconazole (9), lanoconazole (10), fenticonazole (11), bifonazole (12), sulconazole (13), ...

Is imidazole an aromatic?

Imidazole is an important aromatic ring found in many proteins. It has two nitrogen atoms. One resembles pyrrole and is not basic. The second nitrogen is structurally similar to the nitrogen atom of pyridine.

What drug contains imidazole nucleus?

It is also present in the structure of many natural or synthetic drug molecules, that is, cimetidine, azomycin, and metronidazole. Imidazole-containing drugs have a broaden scope in remedying various dispositions in clinical medicine [1].

Why is imidazole so basic?

Explain why N₁ of imidazole is most basic

In the cyclic structure, there are 2 pi bonds (between C₂-C₃ and N₁-C₅) and one lone pair on N₄ that can interact with each other to form a delocalised pi system. ... This means that like bezene, imidazole has a closed delocalised ring of 6 pi electrons.

Which is the strongest base pyrrole?

Therefore, the strongest base is option (D)- piperidine.

Why is pyrrolidine a stronger base than pyridine?

Lone pair on nitrogen of pyridine is involved in resonance. We have to see whether or not nitrogen has lone pairs. In pyrrolidine nitrogen's lone do not involve in resonance therefore that would maintain the electron density on nitrogen making pyrrolidine more basic.

Which is the strongest base and why?

A) Sodium hydroxide is the strongest base because it completely dissociates to form sodium ions and hydroxide ions.

Which is the strongest organic base?

In guanidines, the protonated form (guanidinium) has three resonance structures, giving it increased stability and making guanidines stronger bases. Phosphazene bases also contain phosphorus and are, in general, more alkaline than standard amines and nitrogen-based heterocyclics.

Which of the following is weakest base?

Benzenamine is the weakest base among the following since the delocalisation of the lone pair of electrons in it is not possible due to which the electron density on the molecule is fairly low and the compound acts as the weak base in the presence of the acid.

Why is amide a strong base?

The amide ion is the strongest base since it has two pairs of non-bonding electrons (more electron-electron repulsion) compared to ammonia which only has one. Ammonium is not basic since it has no lone pair to donate as a base. ... larger atoms tend to form weaker bonds with the small proton.

Which heterocycles are more basic than pyrrole?

Pyridine is more basic than pyrrole.
