A diet high in protein can substantially limit carbohydrate intakes. Proteins from animal sources are generally higher in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol and are considered atherogenic.

What foods are in an atherogenic diet?

Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet. Your diet is an especially important factor in your risk for atherosclerosis, and heart disease generally. A heart-healthy diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, lean meats and poultry, low-fat dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes (dried beans and peas).

What lipids from the diet participate in the atherogenic process?

Lipid accumulation in the arterial wall is a crucial event in the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the major source of lipids that accumulate in the atherosclerotic plaques. It was discovered that not all LDL is atherogenic.

What is anti atherogenic effect?

Medical Definition of antiatherogenic

: preventing or inhibiting atherogenesis antiatherogenic effects There also was no clear evidence that beta carotene inhibits the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, the principal proposed mechanism of its postulated antiatherogenic properties.— E.

Is atherogenesis the same as atherosclerosis?

Atherogenesis is the process of atherosclerotic plaque formation, leading to coronary artery heart disease. This process involves immune cells, mainly T and B cells, monocytes and macrophages.

What is the meaning of atherogenic?

Atherogenesis: The process of forming atheromas, plaques in the inner lining (the intima) of arteries.

What are the different types of Hyperlipoproteinemia?

• Type 1 is an inherited condition. ...
• Type 2 runs in families. ...
• Type 3 is a recessively inherited disorder in which intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL) accumulate in your blood. ...
• Type 4 is a dominantly inherited disorder. ...
• Type 5 runs in families.

What properties are anti atherogenic?

HDL have several potentially anti-atherogenic properties. The best known of these is their ability to remove cholesterol from cells, such as macrophages in the artery wall, in the first step of the reverse cholesterol transport pathway (5).

Why LDL is known as bad cholesterol?

It is sometimes called the "bad" cholesterol because a high LDL level leads to a buildup of cholesterol in your arteries. HDL stands for high-density lipoproteins. It is sometimes called the "good" cholesterol because it carries cholesterol from other parts of your body back to your liver.

Is HDL a cholesterol?

HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or “good” cholesterol, absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver. The liver then flushes it from the body. High levels of HDL cholesterol can lower your risk for heart disease and stroke.

How do you calculate atherogenic index?

Atherogenic index was calculated by using formula = log (TG/HDL-C). All values are presented as Mean ± Standard Deviation. The results were statistically analyzed by using student's 't'test and by Pearson's correlation coefficient using SPSS software Version 9. 'p' Value <0.05 is considered as significant.

What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals.

What do chylomicrons transport?

Chylomicrons. Chylomicrons (Fig. 20-14) are formed in the intestinal epithelium to transport long-chain triglycerides to the tissues. Medium- and short-chain fats are transported directly to the liver through the portal circulation without packaging into lipoprotein particles.

What is included in the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet varies by country and region, so it has a range of definitions. But in general, it's high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil. It usually includes a low intake of meat and dairy foods.

What is metabolic eating?

A high metabolism diet aims to make your metabolism faster, so you burn fat instead of storing it. In low-carb diets, your body will shift to burning fat for energy, which leads to the production of compounds called ketones, which are thought to decrease appetite.

Is CHD heart disease?

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a major cause of death in the UK and worldwide. CHD is sometimes called ischaemic heart disease or coronary artery disease.

Which is worse triglycerides or LDL?

LDL is known as the “bad” cholesterol because having too much LDL may cause a buildup of plaque in your blood vessels. Triglycerides are also a type of fat found in your blood. High triglycerides, low HDL, and/or high LDL numbers can increase your risk for heart attack and stroke.

Which is worse LDL or VLDL cholesterol?

LDL is considered 'bad' cholesterol because high levels can lead to the buildup of plaque in your arteries,” said Chiadika. “VLDL is considered 'bad' cholesterol as well but it mainly carries triglycerides, the most common type of fat in your body.

Which is more important HDL or LDL?

Studies suggest that the total cholesterol to HDL ratio is a better marker of the risk of heart disease than LDL cholesterol levels alone.

Is HDL anti atherogenic?

In addition to its role in regulating reverse cholesterol transport, many studies have shown that HDL may also have antiatherogenic properties. Indeed, HDL decreases endothelium inflammation and oxidative stress and increases nitric oxide production and endothelial cell (EC) survival, thus preventing atherogenesis.

What is the anti atherogenic lipoprotein?

Yet, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which transports circulating cholesterol to the liver for clearance, clearly also exerts antiatherogenic effects.

How can you prevent atherosclerosis?

1. Stop smoking. Smoking damages your arteries. ...
2. Exercise most days of the week. ...
3. Lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight. ...
4. Eat healthy foods. ...
5. Manage stress.

What is the reason of Type 1 Hyperlipoproteinemia?

Type I hyperlipoproteinemia is the best-characterized genetic cause of hypertriglyceridemia and is caused by a deficiency or defect in either the enzyme lipoprotein lipase or its cofactor, apo C-II.

What is Frederickson classification?

Fredrickson, Levy and Lees (FLL) defined five primary lipoprotein phenotypes (type I to V) based on dyslipoproteinemias and characterized by the presence of hypercholesterolemia and/or hypertriglyceridemia [3, 4], and this classification system was formally adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1970 [5].
