Abstract. The presence of chemical contaminant in alcoholic beverages is a widespread and notable problem with potential implications for human health.

What are chemical contaminants?

Chemical contaminants are chemicals toxic to plants and animals in waterways. The phrase 'chemical contamination' is used to indicate situations where chemicals are either present where they shouldn't be, or are at higher concentrations than they would naturally have occurred.

What are the 5 types of chemical contaminants?

• industrial chemicals.
• agricultural chemicals.
• toxic metals.
• preservatives.
• naturally occurring toxins.

What are 4 chemical contaminants?

• mycotoxins.
• heavy metals - lead and mercury.
• organic pollutants - dioxins.
• acrylamide which may result from food being processed.

What are the chemical food contaminants?

The different types of chemical contaminants include environmental contaminants (such as industrial chemicals called dioxins), process contaminants that form while cooking or heating food (such as acrylamide), and chemical contaminants used for economically motivated adulteration (such as melamine).

Chemical contaminants in the food chain

What is an example of a contaminant?

Examples of physical contaminants are soil or organic material like algae. Chemical substances include anything from pesticides, nitrogen, bleach, salts, metals, toxins, and other various elements or compounds. Some chemicals are naturally occurring, while others are man-made in origin.

What are the three main types of contamination?

Here are the three types of contaminants: Biological: Examples include bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, and toxins from plants, mushrooms, and seafood. Physical: Examples include foreign objects such as dirt, broken glass, metal staples, and bones. Chemical: Examples include cleaners, sanitizers, and polishes.

What are environmental contaminants?

Environmental contaminants are chemicals that accidentally or deliberately enter the environment, often, but not always, as a result of human activities. Some of these contaminants may have been manufactured for industrial use and because they are very stable, they do not break down easily.

What are examples of biological contamination?

Biological contaminants include bacteria, viruses, animal dander and cat saliva, house dust, mites, cockroaches, and pollen. There are many sources of these pollutants. By controlling the relative humidity level in a home, the growth of some sources of biologicals can be minimized.

What contaminant means?

: something that makes a place or a substance (such as water, air, or food) no longer suitable for use : something that contaminates a place or substance. See the full definition for contaminant in the English Language Learners Dictionary.

What is the most common contaminant in drinking water?

The most common drinking water contaminants are microorganisms, nitrate, and arsenic. Water quality monitoring has improved over the past five years. Bacteria, viruses, and protozoa (such as Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium) are drinking water contaminants that can rapidly cause widespread and serious illnesses.

What are the four main types classes of contaminants that are found in drinking water?

• INORGANIC MINERALS. This group of contaminants includes the minerals and toxic metals. ...
• RADIOACTIVE MINERALS. This group is really a subset of the first group and can include uranium, plutonium and radium. ...
• ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS. ...
• BIOLOGICAL.

What happens if you drink contaminated water?

If drinking water contains unsafe levels of contaminants, it can cause health effects, such as gastrointestinal illnesses, nervous system or reproductive effects, and chronic diseases such as cancer.

How many chemical contaminants are there?

Background Information on the Chemical Contaminant Rules

These rules regulate over 65 contaminants in three contaminant groups: Inorganic Contaminants (IOCs) (including arsenic and nitrate), Volatile Organic Contaminants (VOCs), and. Synthetic Organic Contaminants (SOCs).

What are the 4 types of food contaminant?

This article has broken down the four main types of food contamination: chemical, microbial, physical, and allergenic. It has also highlighted a number of different scenarios that could cause the contamination of a food product and numerous ways of preventing it from occurring.

Which is a physical contaminant?

Physical contaminants (or 'foreign bodies') are objects such as hair, plant stalks or pieces of plastic/metal that can occur as contaminants in food. Sometimes the object is a natural component of the food (e.g. a fruit stalk) - but in all cases it is important to find out what it is and how and when it got there.

What type of contamination is glass?

They can lead to dental damage or choking, and in some cases can even result in death. Some of the more common examples of physical contaminants include glass, metal, rubber, bone, wood, stone and plastic. Here's a closer look at how some of those contaminants find their way into food products.

What is example of physical contamination?

Physical contaminants are also referred to as physical hazards or foreign matter. Shrew teeth in a crop product or a piece of wire in a meat product are examples. Glass pieces, metal fragments, bone chips, and pits may all cause serious harm when ingested.

What are at least 3 types of physical contaminants?

Types of physical contaminants that can be found in food include jewellery, hair, plastic, bones, stones, pest bodies, and cloth.

What is the major environmental chemical pollutants?

There are 10 substances that cause the most concern: Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Carbon Dioxide, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Particulates, Nitrogen Oxides, Ozone, Chlorofluorocarbons, Unburned Hydrocarbons and Lead and Heavy metals.

What is contamination and examples?

The presence of unwanted materials such as dust and particles during the manufacturing and transportation time is called contamination. The term contaminants includes any unwanted matter that is found in the product. ... Examples: fiber material, particles, chips from your pill press tooling. Chemical contamination.

What is natural contamination?

Naturally occurring contamination comes from substances already in the environment, rather than from chemicals or other hazardous materials used or manufactured by humans. Radon is one of those naturally occurring contaminants. ... Rainwater might then wash contaminants such as lead out of exposed piles of soil and rock.

What are the 4 sources of biological contamination?

• Dust.
• Raw meat.
• The air.
• The human body.
• Pets and pests.
• Kitchen clothes.

What are sources of contamination?

Major contamination sources are water, air, dust, equipment, sewage, insects, rodents, and employees. Contamination of raw materials can also occur from the soil, sewage, live animals, external surface, and the internal organs of meat animals.

What is bacterial contamination?

Bacterial contamination occurs when bacteria multiply on food and cause it to spoil. Eating that food can make you sick, either directly from the bacteria or from the toxins they release. There are three main types of foodborne illness from bacterial contamination ( 6 , 7 ): Food intoxication or poisoning.
