Your thyroglobulin levels are high and/or have increased over time. This may mean thyroid cancer cells are growing, and/or cancer is starting to spread. Little or no thyroglobulin was found. This may mean that your cancer treatment has worked to remove all thyroid cells from your body.

What causes thyroglobulin levels to rise?

Levels in the blood are directly proportional to the size of the thyroid. For example, thyroid cancer cells enlarge the gland and make thyroglobulin in high amounts. In fact, any disorder that increases the size of the thyroid (cancer, autoimmune disease, nodules, etc.) can raise thyroglobulin levels [2].

What is considered high thyroglobulin level?

If your thyroglobulin range is “detectable” (this means it is – 5 ug/L or above), there is likely some normal thyroid tissue or cancerous tissue found. If your thyroglobulin range rises with time, and your TSH does not rise, there is likely some thyroid cancer which is growing.

Do thyroglobulin levels fluctuate?

Serum Tg was measured and compared to imaging findings. After treatment initiation, serum Tg levels dropped in all patients with a median reduction of 86.2%. During long-term follow-up (median, 25.2 months), fluctuations in Tg could be observed in 8/9 subjects.

What happens if thyroglobulin antibody is high?

If you have high levels of antithyroglobulin antibodies in your blood, it may be a sign of serious autoimmune disorder, such as Graves' disease or Hashimoto thyroiditis. In some cases, you may have antithyroglobulin antibodies in your blood without any specific complications.

What is the treatment for high thyroid antibodies?

Standard treatment for Hashimoto's disease is levothyroxine, the synthetic form of thyroxine (T-4). However, extracts are available that contain thyroid hormone derived from the thyroid glands of pigs. These products — Armour Thyroid, for example — contain both levothyroxine and triiodothyronine (T-3).

What is the function of thyroglobulin?

Thyroglobulin (Tg) acts as a substrate for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), as well as the storage of the inactive forms of thyroid hormone and iodine within the follicular lumen of a thyroid follicle.

What should my thyroglobulin antibody be?

Thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb): Less than 35 IU/mL. Thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb): Less than 20 IU/mL. Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin antibody (TSI): Less than 140% of basal activity. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor binding inhibitor immunoglobulin (TBII)/TRAb: 1.75 IU/L or less.

What is thyroglobulin a precursor for?

Thyroglobulin is the protein precursor of thyroid hormones, which are essential for growth, development and control of metabolism in vertebrates^1,2. Hormone synthesis from thyroglobulin (TG) occurs in the thyroid gland via the iodination and coupling of pairs of tyrosines and is completed by TG proteolysis³.

How long does thyroglobulin results take?

Thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) testing is performed on all samples. If TgAb is negative, serum thyroglobulin is measured by a sensitive IMA with a relatively rapid turnaround time, generally two to three days. If TgAb is positive, serum thyroglobulin is measured by an RIA method.

What is the normal serum thyroglobulin level?

The serum level TG is proportional to the volume of thyroid tissue in the body at a rate 1 ng/mL per 1 g of thyroid mass. Since the size of the normal thyroid gland is 20-25 g, the reference range has to be generally about 20 to 25 ng/mL.

What does a positive thyroid antibody test mean?

The presence of TPO antibodies in your blood suggests that the cause of thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease. In autoimmune disorders, your immune system makes antibodies that mistakenly attack normal tissue.

Do thyroid antibodies ever go away?
