What is the Law of Variable Proportion? The Law of Variable Proportion states that as the quantity of a factor is increased while keeping other factors constant, the Total Product (TP) first rises at an incremental rate, then at a decremental rate and lastly the total production begins to fall.

What is law of variable proportion with example?

Law of Variable Proportions occupies an important place in economic theory. ... We grow wheat on it with the help of variable factor i.e., labour. Accordingly, the proportion between land and labour will be 1: 5. If the number of laborers is increased to 2, the new proportion between labour and land will be 2: 5.

What is law of variable proportions with diagram Class 11?

Law of Variable proportion:

The diagram indicates, how the total product and marginal product changes as a result of increases in the quantity of one factor to a fixed quantity of other factors.

What is a variable proportion?

It is referred to as the law which states that when the quantity of one factor of production is increased, while keeping all other factors constant, it will result in the decline of the marginal product of that factor. ... Law of variable proportion is also known as the Law of Proportionality.

What is point of inflexion in law of variable proportions?

The point F where the total product stops increasing at an increasing rate and starts increasing at the diminishing rate is called the point of inflection. ... Thus, marginal product of the variable factor starts diminishing beyond OL amount of the variable factor.

Law of Variable Proportion

What are the different phases in the law of variable proportions give reasons behind each phase use diagram?

The Phases are : Phase I : TP rises at increasing rate, i.e. upto A. Phase II : TP rises at decreasing rate, i.e. between A and B. Phase III : TP falls i.e. after B.

What are the different phases in the law of variable proportion?

There is no difference between fixed and variable factors of production. There are 3 stages namely, increased returns, constant returns, and decreasing returns, and no stage is considered best for the long run. Q2. State the Law of Variable Proportion with its Assumptions.

How do you find the law of variable proportions?

Answer: The law of variable proportions is as follows: “If a producer increases the units of a variable factor while keeping other factors fixed, then initially the total product increases at an increasing rate, then it increases at a diminishing rate, and finally starts declining.”

Who gave law of variable proportion?

This what we are going to discuss here in the name of Law of Variable Propotions. The law of variable proportion is the most important law in economics. Economists like Alfred Marshall, Benham,Samulson contributed maximium to this law. This law is based on short run production function.

What are the causes of law of variable proportion?

• Better Utilization of the Fixed Factor: ADVERTISEMENTS: ...
• Increased Efficiency of Variable Factor: When variable factors are increased and combined with the fixed factor, then former is utilised in a more efficient manner. ...
• Indivisibility of Fixed Factor:

What is variable in economics class 11?

Answer: A measurable characteristic whose value changes overtime is called variable. It refers to that quantity which keeps on changing and which can be measured by some unit. For example, if we measure the height of students of a class, then height is regarded as a variable.

Which is correct for the law of variable proportion Mcq?

Solution: The law of variable proportions come into being when there is a fixed factor and a variable factor. The law of variable proportions states that as the quantity of one factor is increased, keeping the other factors fixed, the marginal product of that factor will eventually decline.

Is law of variable proportions and law of diminishing returns same?

According to the law of diminishing returns, an increase in only one input production factor of a specific system will initially bring in increased returns only up to a certain extent. ... The law of variable proportion showcases the change in the output of a system which alters with an increasing variable input factor.

What does the law of variable proportions show state the behavior of marginal product according to this law?

What does the Law of variable Proportions show? State the behaviour of total product according to this law. The law of variable proportions state that as the quantity of one factor is increased, keeping the other factors fixed, the marginal product of that factor will eventually decline.

In which phase of law of variable proportion a rational firm aims to operate?

ADVERTISEMENTS: A rational producer will always seek to operate in the 2nd phase of law of variable proportions. i. In the 1st phase, employment of every additional unit of variable factor gives more and more output i.e. marginal product increases.

What is the law of variable proportions explain the relationship between total product marginal product and average product using suitable diagrams?

The law of variable proportions is used to explain the relationship between Total Product and Marginal Product. ... When the Marginal Product (MP) increases, the Total Product is also increasing at an increasing rate. This gives the Total product curve a convex shape in the beginning as variable factor inputs increase.

What are the limitations of law of variable proportion?

Limitations of the law of variable proportion are as follows: A new land for cultivation with application of labor and capital will witness higher growth in the initial years. The marginal returns will be increasing instead of decreasing in the beginning.

What is production function explain the law of variable proportions?

If one input is variable and all other inputs are fixed the firm's production function exhibits the law of variable proportions. If the number of units of a variable factor is increased, keeping other factors constant, how output changes is the concern of this law.

How is the U shape of average variable cost explained by the law of variable proportions?

AVC is 'U' shaped because of the principle of variable Proportions, which explains the three phases of the curve: Increasing returns to the variable factors, which cause average costs to fall, followed by: Constant returns, followed by: Diminishing returns, which cause costs to rise.

Does law of variable proportions apply in agriculture?

He defines the law as follows: “An increase in the capital and labour applied in the cultivation of land causes in general a less than proportionate increase in the amount of produce raised unless it happens to coincide with an improvement in the arts of agriculture.”

What are the different phases in Law of variable proportion in terms of total product and marginal product give reasons for each phase use diagram?

• Ist Stage: Increasing Returns to a Factor. ...
• Reasons for Increasing Returns to a Factor. ...
• Ilnd Stage: Diminishing Returns to a Factor. ...
• Reasons for Decreasing Returns to a Factor. ...
• IIIrd Stage: Negative Returns to a Factor.

What are the three stages of production?

-Production within an economy can be divided into three main stages: primary, secondary and tertiary.

What are the three stages of production in the short run?

The three stages of short-run production are readily seen with the three product curves--total product, average product, and marginal product.

What are the different phases in the law of variable proportions in terms of total product use diagram?

explanation: Stage I: As more units of factor input are used, the total product increases at an increasing rate which is called increasing returns to the factor input. Stage II: However, when the 4th unit of factor input is used, the diminishing returns sets in, where TP increases at a decreasing rate.
