How vaporizers work anesthesia?
Rachel Ellis It works by controlling the vaporization of anesthetic agents from liquid, and then accurately controlling the concentration in which these are added to the Fresh gas flow - Wikipedia
What is the function of vaporizer?
A vaporizer or vaporiser, colloquially known as a vape, is a device used to vaporize substances for inhalation. Plant substances can be used, commonly cannabis, tobacco, or other herbs or blends of essential oil.
How is temperature compensated for with vaporizers?
Modern vaporizers are temperature compensated (hence the Tec series). The most commonly used methods are: Bimetallic strips: consisting of two metal strips with different coefficients of thermal expansion. As temperature decreases, the strip bends, allowing more fresh gas flow to enter the vaporizing chamber.
What is vapor pressure anesthesia?
As anesthetic agent molecules collide with each other in the walls of the vaporizer, a pressure is created, known as the saturated vapor pressure, which is unique for each volatile anesthetic (Table 8-1). Vapor pressure is independent of atmospheric pressure, but dependent on the physical characteristics of the liquid.
How does a desflurane vaporizer maintain its internal temperature?
Vaporizers are designed with materials of high specific heat and thermal conductivity, allowing them to resist the changes of external and internal (cooling) temperature. Thus, a constant temperature is maintained inside the vaporization chamber during the evaporation process.

Normally, the interlock mechanism on top of the vaporizer has a pin in the slot that fits the interlock bar in a closed position only [Figure 2a]. The interlock closes only with the vaporizer in the off position and not when it is in use with a maximum dial concentration.
How does altitude affect anesthesia?
The partial pressure of the anesthetic agent is what determines whether a patient is anesthetized, and it does not change at different altitudes. So if you are doing anesthesia with isoflurane at high altitude, setting the dial to 1% will have the same effect as it would at sea level.
Why is Des heated?
Desflurane vaporizers are heated to 39 degrees C, which increases the vapor pressure in the sump to 1300mmHg, preventing the possibility of boiling in warm OR rooms. Providing an external heat source compensates for the significant heat loss associated with desflurane vaporization.
What is the most potent inhaled anesthetic?
Isoflurane has the lowest MAC, requiring the lowest alveolar concentration to abolish motor response, and is the most potent agent of the three mentioned.
What does anesthesia gas smell like?
Sevoflurane is a sweet-smelling, nonflammable, highly fluorinated methyl isopropyl ether used as an inhalational anaesthetic for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia.
Which inhaled anesthetics do not use variable bypass vaporizer?
This means that desflurane is nearly boiling at room temperature. The vaporizer is a gas/vapor blender, not a variable bypass type.
How do you calculate anesthesia for Vaping?
SVP agent (mmHg) / Total pressure (mmHg) = Volume of volatile anesthetic / total volume leaving vaporizer = Volatile anesthetic (ml) / (carrier gas (ml) + Volatile anesthetic (ml)). Thus, if the fresh gas flow is set to 1L and dial is set at 1%, 10 ml/min of sevoflurane gas must exit the vaporizer.
What mixture of gases are used in anaesthesia?
Nitrous oxide is frequently mixed with air or oxygen to serve the purpose of analgesia and anaesthesia. A 50% mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, popularly known as entonox is used as a labour analgesia in maternity suites.
How do LNG vaporizers work?
The heat source for the vaporizer uses air instead of seawater. This system makes use of aqueous glycol solution, which is once cooled by heat exchange with LNG. The aqueous glycol solution is heated up by air blown by fans which is in turn reused for the exchange of heat with LNG (see Figure 7).
How does a gas vaporizer work?
A vaporizer is an apparatus which acts like a boiler / heat exchanger. Liquid LPG goes in to the vaporizer via pipelines and comes out as gas which is then supplied to the respective machinery. The machinery burns the gas to operate itself.
How does an oxygen vaporizer work?
There is an inner vessel surrounded by an outer vessel. ... This space keeps heat away from the liquid oxygen held in the inner vessel. Vaporizers convert the liquid oxygen into a gaseous state. A pressure control manifold then controls the gas pressure that is fed to the process or application.
How are inhalation agents eliminated?
As these agents are predominantly eliminated via lungs, the renal and hepatobiliary system has a little role to play. In spite of this, knowing the pharmacogenetics for inhalational anesthetics is important for perioperative physicians i.e. anesthesiologists.
Why are inhalation Anaesthetics used?
Inhalation anesthetic agents are medications primarily used in the operating room to provide general anesthesia for surgery.
Is nitrous oxide an Anaesthetic gas?
Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used inhalation anesthetic in dentistry and is commonly used in emergency centers and ambulatory surgery centers as well.
How is isoflurane administered?
Isoflurane is given via inhalation. Side effects of isoflurane include a decreased ability to breathe (respiratory depression), low blood pressure, and an irregular heartbeat. Serious side effects can include malignant hyperthermia or high blood potassium.
How do variable bypass vaporizers work?
In a variable-bypass vaporizer, the total background gas flow that enters the unit is split into two streams. The smaller stream, which acts as the carrier gas, passes through the vaporizing chamber containing the anesthetic agent and becomes saturated with agent vapor; the remainder of the gas bypasses this chamber.
What physiological changes occur at high altitudes?
The classical physiological responses to high altitude include hyperventilation, polycythemia, hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction–increased intracellular oxidative enzymes, and increased capillary density in muscle.
How does MAC relate to anesthetic potency?
The minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of volatile agents is a term used to describe the potency of anesthetic vapors. It is defined as the concentration that prevents movement in response to skin incision in 50% of unpremedicated subjects studied at sea level (1 atmosphere), in 100% oxygen.
