A supracondylar fracture is typically treated by putting a splint or cast around your elbow and then using a sling to keep it in position. Other treatments include ice and medications to relieve pain and swelling. Surgical or nonsurgical.

What is the most common treatment for supracondylar fractures?

Gartland type III, and flexion supracondylar fractures are treated with reduction and percutaneous K-wire fixation. Patients should be kept nil orally until a decision about the timing of surgery is made. For open fractures, tetanus immunisation status should be assessed.

How long does it take for a supracondylar fracture to heal?

Supracondylar humerus fractures often heal within 4 weeks from start of treatment (either surgery or casting). After your child has his or her cast removed, it may take 4 weeks for the child to be able to move the elbow normally. In rare cases, your child may require physical therapy to help regain strength and motion.

Is supracondylar fracture an emergency?

Displaced supracondylar fractures have been traditionally treated as surgical emergencies due to the risk of neurovascular complications or the belief that open reduction instead of closed reduction will be needed if surgery is delayed.

Does a supracondylar fracture need a cast?

A supracondylar elbow fracture will require cast and sling while the fracture heals.

Supracondylar Fractures Of The Humerus In Children

Can you sleep lying down with a broken humerus?

Though it may be uncomfortable, try sleeping, as much as possible, in a seated/upright position. Lying flat may allow the bone to move and bend, even in a cast.

What nerve is affected in supracondylar fracture?

The radial and anterior interosseous nerves are thought to be those most commonly involved by the fracture itself^2,3,7 while iatrogenic damage most often affects the ulnar nerve.

What are the complications of supracondylar fracture of humerus?

The complication of supracondylar fractures can be divided into early and late. Early complications include vascular injury, nerve injury and compartment syndrome. Late complications include malunion and stiffness. Vascular injury is reported between 2-38 % in Gartland type III.

What type of splint is used for supracondylar fracture?

Type I supracondylar fractures are stable fractures to the elbow that are treated conservatively across the world and typically heal very well without complications. There are several treatment options, including an above elbow cast or long arm splint.

Which structure should you monitor when there is a supracondylar fracture?

It can be examined with decreased sensation in dorsal aspect of the hand and weak wrist extensors. Ulnar nerve is prone to injury following flexion type of supracondylar fractures and loss of sensation in its distribution can be examined following weakness of intrinsic muscles of the hand.

What does Supracondylar mean?

Medical Definition of supracondylar

: of, relating to, affecting, or being the part of a bone situated above a condyle supracondylar osteotomy a supracondylar fracture of the humerus.

How do I loosen my elbow after casting?

1. Lift the arm that bothers you, and bend the elbow. Your palm should face toward you.
2. With your other hand, gently push on the back of your affected forearm. ...
3. Hold for at least 15 to 30 seconds.
4. Repeat 2 to 4 times.

Is acetabular fracture a hip fracture?

An acetabular fracture is a break in the socket portion of the "ball-and-socket" hip joint. These hip socket fractures are not common — they occur much less frequently than fractures of the upper femur or femoral head (the "ball" portion of the joint).

How long does a distal humerus fracture take to heal?

Total recovery time can take 6 months and most patients have very good range of motion and strength after the bone heals. The most common long term complications are joint stiffness, heterotopic bone formation and painful retained hardware or pain over the plates.

How do you reduce swelling from a humerus fracture?

1. Cold packs. Putting an ice pack on the injured area may help reduce swelling and pain.
2. Pain medicines. Taking prescription or over-the-counter pain medicines may help reduce pain and swelling.
3. Exercises.

What is a supracondylar bone fracture?

A supracondylar fracture is a break to the lower part of this bone, close to the elbow. It is one of the most common fractures we see, especially in younger children. This injury occurs most often with what we call a FOOSH (fall onto an out-stretched hand).

What is a Type 3 supracondylar humerus fracture?

Gartland originally described a classification for extension-type supracondylar humerus fractures, dividing them into three types: type I is non-displaced, type II is displaced with an intact posterior cortex, and type III is displaced without cortical contact [2, 5].

What is the difference between Smith and Colles fracture?

Smith fractures do not extend to the wrist, hence they are extra-articular. These fractures are usually transverse. Smith fractures are rare and are most often seen in elderly women or young men. A Colles fracture is a broken wrist.

How does a supracondylar fracture happen?

Overview. A supracondylar fracture is an injury to the humerus, or upper arm bone, at its narrowest point, just above the elbow. Supracondylar fractures are the most common type of upper arm injury in children. They are frequently caused by a fall on an outstretched elbow or a direct blow to the elbow.

What is the commonest complication of Supracondylar?

The difficulty in maintaining the reduction and ultimately the cubitus varus is the most frequent long-term complication with an incidence ranging from 3 to 57%. Adequate reduction and pinning has dramatically decreased this incidence.

What age group is susceptible to supracondylar fractures?

This is a fracture that occurs more frequently in skeletally immature children than adults. The peak age for supracondylar fractures is between 6 and 7 years of age [3]. At this age, the supracondylar area is undergoing remodeling and is typically thinner with a more slender cortex, predisposing this area to fracture.

What nerve is most likely to be injured in a supracondylar humerus fracture?

The most commonly injured nerve was the ulnar nerve (43.4%), followed by the median (36.7%) and radial nerves (19.9%).

How long do you have to wear a sling for a fractured elbow?

If you have a small fracture and your bones did not move around much, you will likely wear a splint or sling that supports your arm, elbow, and forearm. You will probably need to wear this for at least 2 to 3 weeks.

Can a fractured elbow heal without a cast?

Technically speaking, the answer to the question “can broken bones heal without a cast?” is yes. Assuming conditions are just right, a broken bone can heal without a cast. However, (and very importantly) it doesn't work in all cases. Likewise, a broken bone left to heal without a cast may heal improperly.
