When should you use a cardioid microphone?

Cardioid mics capture everything in front and block everything else. This front-focused pattern will let you point the mic to a sound source and isolate it from unwanted ambient sound, making it ideal for live performance and other situations where noise reduction and feedback suppression are needed.

What are cardioid mics used for?

The most common unidirectional microphone is a cardioid microphone, so named because the sensitivity pattern is "heart-shaped", i.e. a cardioid. The cardioid family of microphones are commonly used as vocal or speech microphones since they are good at rejecting sounds from other directions.

Which way should my cardioid mic face?

Cardioid/Uni Directional: Cardioid microphones pick up sound from the front and offer maximum rejection at the rear. They are useful for reducing bleed and leakage between sound sources, making them ideal for live performances and situations where feedback suppression is needed.

Is a cardioid mic a condenser?

The two are not mutually exclusive, because condenser microphones are also cardioid. Dynamic mics are cardioid too! The main takeaway is this: cardioid is a polar pattern, while condenser is a type of microphone.

How to set up a Condenser Microphone

What is the pickup angle for cardioid microphones?

A cardioid mic has a useful pickup angle of 131 degrees, so it can accommodate one or two singers and is forgiving enough to still pick up a vocalist with a wandering mic technique. The cardioid pattern offers very good feedback rejection.

Do cardioid mics need phantom power?

Nope. Not only do dynamic mics not need phantom power, they don't need any power to work.

Is a shotgun mic a condenser mic?

A type of microphone characterized by an extremely directional polar pattern. Shotgun mics may be condenser or dynamic, but are almost always built with a long (8 to 24 inch) tube protruding from the front.

Can you use condenser mic without soundcard?

Condenser microphones almost always need phantom power. This is a 48V voltage that is usually supplied to the microphone from the mixing board or mic preamp by the XLR cable. If you're using an XLR-to-stereo-mini plug then it's probably not going to work. You could buy a USB audio interface.

Do condenser mics need a preamp?

A preamp is one of those essential items for your studio. If you use a condenser microphone, which requires 48v phantom power to work, you'll need a preamp to provide it! ... The audio signal from microphones is weak, so they need a preamp to translate it into a stronger "Line level" signal.

How does a cardioid condenser microphone work?

Cardioid mics primarily are sensitive to sound on one side or end of the microphone—that is, they are unidirectional—and reject sound from the sides and rear of the mic. Other polar patterns found in condenser microphones are: Hypercardioid.

What is the pickup pattern of a shotgun mic?

A shotgun microphone has a lobar polar/pickup pattern (an extension of the supercardioid or hypercardioid polar patterns). Interference tubes are placed in front of the diaphragm to achieve extreme directionality. These unidirectional mics generally have small side and rear lobes of sensitivity.

How does a super cardioid mic work?

The supercardioid microphone capsule/cartridge has both sides of its diaphragm exposed to external sound pressure. In other words, they work on the pressure-gradient principle and, therefore, exhibit the proximity effect.

What does the 48v button do?

The 48v button enables phantom power on the combo XLR connector, which will be sent down the XLR microphone cable to the microphone. Phantom power is required when using condenser microphones. Dynamic and most ribbon microphones do not require phantom power to operate.

What does the 48v button do on focusrite?

Quick Answer: The 48v button supplies your condenser microphone with power so it will work.

Is Shure SM58 a condenser microphone?

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MICROPHONE. The major difference between each of these microphones is that they are two different types of mic entirely. The Shure SM58 is a dynamic microphone whereas the Shure SM86 is a condenser microphone.

What is cardioid pickup pattern?

A cardioid pickup pattern is a highly flexible pickup pattern that is great for all-purpose use. ... A cardioid mic, while slightly directional, should not be confused with a hypercardioid or supercardioid mic. Cardioid mics will still pickup background noise if they are not in a controlled environment.

What makes a microphone cardioid?

The cardioid mic is directional at high frequencies because its housing blocks high frequencies off-axis. How about a bi-directional ribbon mic? The ribbon is fully open to sound on its front and rear. Sounds from the front and rear experience a phase shift as they travel around the ribbon, so you get an output signal.

Can both condenser and dynamic microphones have a cardioid polar pattern?

Most dynamic microphones will usually have either a cardioid or super cardioid, whereas condensers can have pretty much any pattern, and some may even a switch that can change polar patterns!

Is a condenser mic better for vocals?

Condenser microphones are best used to capture vocals and high frequencies. They are also the preferred type of microphone for most studio applications. ... Because of the thin diaphragm and increased sensitivity, condenser mics are often used to pick up delicate sounds.
