Peptization is the method of producing stable colloids using an electrolyte to split up and distribute a precipitate into the colloids. Peptization utilizes the charges to produce colloids from the precipitate. The electrolyte used in the process is called a peptizing agent.

What is peptization and explain its cause?

Peptization is a process of passing of a precipitate into colloidal particles on adding suitable electrolyte. The electrolyte added is known as peptizing agent. ... On adding insufficient quantity of very dilute HCl solution to the freshly precipitated aluminium hydroxide, a sol of aluminium hydroxide is obtained.

What is peptization explain its mechanism?

When electrolyte is added to the freshly precipitated substance the particles of the precipitate preferentially absorb one particular type of ions of the electrolyte and get dispersed due to electrostatic repulsions giving particles of colloidal size and hence cause peptization.

How does peptization happen?

The peptization occurs because as the electrolyte is added to a freshly precipitated substance, the particles of the precipitate preferentially adsorb one particular type of ions of the electrolyte (ions common with the precipitated substance). As a result, they get dispersed due to electrostatic repulsion.

What is peptization Class 12 example?

By adding suitable electrolyte, the method of converting a precipitate into a colloidal solution is called peptization. ... The addition of a small amount of dilute hydrochloric acid to stannic oxide precipitate gives a stable sol of stannic oxide is an example for the peptization.

What is peptization? (Class 12 surface chemistry )

What is Peptization explain with example?

Peptization is the method of producing stable colloids using an electrolyte to split up and distribute a precipitate into the colloids. ... Example: When the ferric chloride is added to the precipitate of ferric hydroxide, the hydroxide precipitate transfer to the sol by absorbing ferric ions.

What is the example of Peptization?

Peptization is the formation of a colloid by breaking up a precipitate using an electrolyte (peptizing agent) to disperse into a colloid. For example, clay will normally fall out of solution in water, forming a precipitate, but by using sodium carbonate as a peptizing agent clay can form a colloid with water.

What is Peptization and how is it avoided?

Peptization should be avoided. (Peptization is the process by which a coagulated precipitate is returned to its colloidal state.) ... Peptization can be minimized by washing a precipitate with a solution of an electrolyte that is volatilized during an ensuing drying step.

How is Peptization different from coagulation?

Formation of sol from the precipitate by the addition of electrolyte is known as peptization. While the conversion of a sol into a precipitate is known as coagulation. It involves the neutralization of a sol particle to form a suspension and this represents the coagulation.

What solution prevents Peptization in precipitate?

This occurs as the electric double layer increases as electrolyte is washed from the precipitate. Peptization is minimized by washing with a solution containing a volatile electrolyte. HNO3 is added to the wash solution for this reason.

How are colloids prepared by Peptisation method?

Peptization: In peptization method, some electrolytes are added to form a colloidal sol from a freshly prepared precipitate. Example: Ferric chloride is added to a freshly prepared precipitate of ferric hydroxide which converts it into a colloidal sol of reddish brown.

What is protective colloid and gold number?

The Gold Number is the minimum weight (in milligrams) of a protective colloid required to prevent the coagulation of 10 ml of a standard hydro gold sol when 1 ml of a 10% sodium chloride solution is added to it. It was first used by Richard Adolf Zsigmondy.

What is Gold Number Class 12?

> The gold number is defined as the minimum mass of the colloid in milligram that is added to the 10ml of red gold sol to protect it from the coagulation when 1 ml of 10% NaCl is added. > ... The colloid which is added is a lyophilic colloid i.e. water-loving colloid.

What is electro disintegration?

Bredig's arc method or electrical disintegration is a method of preparation of colloidal solution, of metals such as gold, silver or platinum. This method consists of both dispersion and condensation. ... The intense heat of the arc vaporizes some of the metal which then condenses under cold water.

What is emulsion Class 12?

Emulsions:- An emulsion is a colloidal dispersion in which both the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium are liquids. Emulsifiers or emulsifyingagent:- The emulsion are generally prepared by shaking strongly the mixture of two colloids these emulsions are generally unstable.

What is Peptisation and coagulation?

Peptization is the formation of a colloidal dispersion from a precipitation. Coagulation is the formation of aggregates from oppositely charged particles which are then settled down under gravity. Coagulation is one of the various properties exhibited by colloidal solutions.

What is difference between Peptization and precipitation?

Peptization is the formation of a colloidal dispersion from a precipitation. ... The main difference between peptization and coagulation is that peptization involves the breakdown of a precipitate in order to form colloids whereas coagulation includes the formation of aggregates in a colloidal dispersion.

Is Peptization involve coagulation?

Peptization does not involve coagulation. Peptization is the process of converting a precipitate into colloidal sol by shaking it with dispersion medium in the presence of a small amount of electrolyte.

What are peptizing agents?

1. n. [Drilling Fluids] A product that enhances dispersion of a substance (such as clay) into colloidal form.

How does electrolytes cause coagulation as well as Peptisation of colloids?

Electrolytes provide oppositely charged ions which can cause coagulation of colloidal solution. ... This breaks up the precipitate into smaller particles of the size of colloid.

What is Peptisation and Peptising agent?

In other words it may be defined as a process of converting a precipitate into colloidal sol by shaking it with dispersion medium in the presence of small amount of electrolyte. The electrolyte used in this process is called as peptizing agent.

What happens when dialysis is prolonged?

Due to this removal of electrolytes, the colloidal particles become unstable and will lead to the process of coagulation.

What is gold number explain with example?

Gold Number is a term used in colloidal chemistry. It is defined as the minimum amount of protective colloid in milligrams which prevents a color change from red to violet of 10ml gold sol by the addition of 1 ml of 10%NaCl solution.

How can you convert an ordinary filter paper into an ultra filter paper?

Ultrafiltration:- First of all filter paper is treated with colodion or gelatin solution followed by hardening by dipping into formaldehyde. The colloid in solution used is 4% solution of nitrocellulose in a mixture of alcohol and ether. Due to this pore size of filter paper is reduced.
