Fluorapatite (FA) is formed when fluoride exchanges with the hydroxyl groups of present hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone, which is less soluble in acid.

Where does hydroxyapatite come from?

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral of biological and agricultural importance. Human and animal bones are composed of hydroxyapatite. In nutrient recovery processes, hydroxyapatite is generated through treatment of waste streams containing calcium.

How does hydroxyapatite turn into fluorapatite?

When hydroxyapatite dissolves under cariogenic (acidic) conditions, if fluoride is present, then fluorapatite will form. Because fluorapatite is less soluble than hydroxyapatite, it is also more resistant to subsequent demineralization when acid challenged (Figure 4).

What is the mechanism of fluoride?

In the 1980s, it was established that fluoride controls caries mainly through its topical effect. Fluoride present in low, sustained concentrations (sub-ppm range) in the oral fluids during an acidic challenge is able to absorb to the surface of the apatite crystals, inhibiting demineralization.

How does fluoride work fluorapatite?

Once inside the tooth, the fluoride forms a new compound known as fluorapatite. This compound is even stronger than hydroxyapatite. It works to fortify the tooth and helps to protect against plaque and decay.

How Does Fluoride Change Your Teeth?

Does fluoride really Remineralize teeth?

Fluoride is a crucial ingredient in remineralization because, once fluoride is in your enamel, it combines with calcium and phosphate to create a defense system that prevents cavities.

What type of mineral is fluorapatite?

fluorapatite, common phosphate mineral, a calcium fluoride phosphate, Ca₅(PO₄)₃F. It occurs as minute, often green, glassy crystals in many igneous rocks, and also in magnetite deposits, high-temperature hydrothermal veins, and metamorphic rocks; it also occurs as collophane in marine deposits.

Why is fluorapatite stronger?

Is Fluorapatite Stronger than Hydroxyapatite? Fluorapatite is less soluble than hydroxyapatite. This means that in acidic conditions, fluorapatite is stronger and more resistant to demineralization.

Does PF6 exist?

For this molecule [PF6] - the central atom is Phosphorus (P). there are 6 Fluorine atoms which contribute 1 electron each, so adding the 6 electrons to the valence shells totals 11 electrons. The Phosphorus has a negative charge so there is an extra electron. ... The VSEPR model for [PF6] - is Octahedral.

How does fluoride act on teeth?

Once in your enamel, fluoride teams up with calcium and phosphate there to create the most powerful defense system your teeth can have to prevent cavities from forming: fluoroapatite. It's much stronger, more resistant to decay and fights to protect your teeth.

Can nano hydroxyapatite replace fluoride?

Nano-Medical Hydroxyapatite is showing up in toothpastes as an alternative to fluoride. It is a gold standard ingredient for oral health products in Japan known to combat tooth decay by remineralizing and repairing teeth.

How is hydroxyapatite processed?

The synthesis of hydroxyapatite by solution combustion method and its processing have been studied in order to obtain fully dense ceramic bodies with improved mechanical strength. Combustion synthesis provides nanostructured powders characterized by a high surface area to facilitate the following sintering.

What two minerals make up hydroxyapatite?

Bone material properties

* The mineral component is composed of hydroxyapatite, which is an insoluble salt of calcium and phosphorus. About 65% of adult bone mass is hydroxyapatite.

How do you synthesize hydroxyapatite?

Hydroxyapatite can be synthesized using different techniques such as precipitation, hydrolysis, and hydrothermal synthesis [20], [21], [24] or extracted from natural resources, e.g. fish bones [25], seashells[26], eggshells [27], [28], bovine bones [29], [30], shrimp shells [29].

Is toothpaste a fluoride?

Fluoride is a common ingredient in oral health products like toothpaste and mouthwash, and it is also used in medical imaging scans, as a cleaning agent, and as an additive to steel and aluminum products.

Can fluoride fix a cavity?

Fluoride treatment

When a cavity is in its early stages, fluoride can often put the decay at a halt as well as reverse how bad the decay may be. The fluoride agents restore tooth enamel and ensure that it is strong and durable.

What is the best source of fluoride?

• Spinach. Popeye's favorite superfood, spinach is packed with all kinds of great vitamins and minerals, and fluoride is among them. ...
• Grapes, Raisins, and Wine. ...
• Black Tea. ...
• Potatoes.

Is fluorapatite soluble?

Fluorapatite is a highly insoluble calcium phosphate phase. The solubility product of stoichiometric fluorapatite at 37°C is 3.19 ± 0.14×10⁻⁶¹mol l⁻¹ (for Ca₅(PO₄)₃F as reported by Moreno et al.

What is calcite mineral used for?

Calcite is the mineral component of limestone which is used primarily as construction aggregates, and in production of lime and cement.

What is fluorosis give its main symptoms?

Symptoms of fluorosis range from tiny white specks or streaks that may be unnoticeable to dark brown stains and rough, pitted enamel that is difficult to clean. Teeth that are unaffected by fluorosis are smooth and glossy. They should also be a pale creamy white.

What foods are high in fluoride?

• Spinach. Popeye's favorite superfood, spinach is packed with all kinds of great vitamins and minerals, and fluoride is among them. ...
• Grapes, Raisins, and Wine. ...
• Black Tea. ...
• Potatoes.

What fluoride does to the body?

In simple terms, fluoride helps prevent cavities. It helps during the remineralization of teeth by strengthening enamel and protecting it against tooth decay. In young children, fluoride helps to harden the enamel of their baby and permanent teeth before they begin to come in.

How do I remove fluoride from my teeth?

1. Veneers. Veneers are small porcelain caps placed over your existing teeth to make your smile brighter and more even. ...
2. Teeth Whitening. ...
3. Enamel Microabrasion.
