How have explorations of saltwater lakes and hydrothermal?
Gabriel Cooper How have explorations of saltwater lakes and hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor led biologists to revise their ideas about the origin of eukaryotes? They found 18.3 assessment questions Flashcards | Quizlet
Which of the following types of bacteria would you be most likely to find in the human intestinal tract?
The main types of bacteria in the colon are obligate anaerobes, and the most abundant bacteria are members of the genus Bacteroides, anaerobic gram-positive cocci, such as Peptostreptococcus sp., Eubacterium sp., Lactobacillus sp., and Clostridium sp.
Why do some bacteria not respond to Gram staining?
Gram-negative bacteria have a thin peptidoglycan layer which does not retain the crystal violet, so when safranin is added during the process, they stain red. The Chlamydiaceae and Mycoplasmataceae lack a peptidoglycan layer so do not retain crystal violet or safranin, resulting in no color.
What is the earliest known group of living organisms?
Bacteria have been the very first organisms to live on Earth. They made their appearance 3 billion years ago in the waters of the first oceans. At first, there were only anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria (the primordial atmosphere was virtually oxygen-free).
What eukaryotic organelle is functionally similar to the prokaryotic cell membrane and its Infoldings?
What eukaryotic organelle is functionally similar to the prokaryotic cell membrane and its infoldings? Chloroplasts are similar to the bacterial cell membrane and bacterial thylakoids.

18 related questions foundHow is cell structures and functions helpful in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells as well as in both plant and animal cell?
Answer: Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have structures in common. All cells have a plasma membrane, ribosomes, cytoplasm, and DNA. The plasma membrane, or cell membrane, is the phospholipid layer that surrounds the cell and protects it from the outside environment.
How are prokaryotes and eukaryotes similar?
Similarities Between Prokaryotic And Eukaryotic Cells
Both types of cells have five similarities: ... Both cells carry DNA and rDNA (ribosomal DNA) Both prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells have vesicles. Both prokaryotes and eukaryotes may be single-celled organisms.
Was the first living cell autotrophic or heterotrophic?
The earliest cells were probably heterotrophs. Most likely they got their energy from other molecules in the organic “soup.” However, by about 3 billion years ago, a new way of obtaining energy evolved. This new way was photosynthesis.
What is the first life forms that existed on Earth?
Prokaryotes were the earliest life forms, simple creatures that fed on carbon compounds that were accumulating in Earth's early oceans. Slowly, other organisms evolved that used the Sun's energy, along with compounds such as sulfides, to generate their own energy.
How did animals evolve?
Plants and animals both owe their origins to endosymbiosis, a process where one cell ingests another, but for some reason then fails to digest it. The evidence for this lies in the way their cells function. ... Like the plants, animals evolved in the sea. And that is where they remained for at least 600 million years.
What stain illustrates certain structures?
In simple staining, a single dye is used to emphasize particular structures in the specimen. A simple stain will generally make all of the organisms in a sample appear to be the same color, even if the sample contains more than one type of organism.
Why is decolorization important in Gram staining?
The Gram stain is the most important staining procedure in microbiology. ... This layer makes up 60-90% of the gram positive cell wall. Decolorizing the cell causes this thick cell wall to dehydrate and shrink, which closes the pores in the cell wall and prevents the stain from exiting the cell.
What does epithelial cells in Gram stain mean?
Gram stains are usually scanned for the presence or absence of white blood cells (indicative of infection) and squamous epithelial cells (indicative of mucosal contamination).
Which beneficial bacteria are present in our intestine?
The most commonly used probiotic species are nonpathogenic yeasts and organisms from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium [69].
How does Saprophytic bacteria obtain energy?
Saprophytic bacteria are an example. They attain their nutrition from dead organic matter. Using enzymes, these bacteria will break down complex compounds and use the nutrients to release energy.
Did humans evolve fungi?
Fungi paved the way for human civilization
Thousands of years ago, humans brewed beer not to party, but because yeast — a single-celled fungus — made potentially contaminated water safe to drink by killing bacteria.
What came before dinosaurs?
At the time all Earth's land made up a single continent, Pangea. The age immediately prior to the dinosaurs was called the Permian. Although there were amphibious reptiles, early versions of the dinosaurs, the dominant life form was the trilobite, visually somewhere between a wood louse and an armadillo.
Who was the first human on earth?
The First Humans
One of the earliest known humans is Homo habilis, or “handy man,” who lived about 2.4 million to 1.4 million years ago in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Who discovered cell?
Initially discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665, the cell has a rich and interesting history that has ultimately given way to many of today's scientific advancements.
How might the first cells on Earth have formed?
The first cell is presumed to have arisen by the enclosure of self-replicating RNA in a membrane composed of phospholipids (Figure 1.4). ... Such a phospholipid bilayer forms a stable barrier between two aqueous compartments—for example, separating the interior of the cell from its external environment.
How did the first cell membranes arise?
The first forms of cellular life required self-assembled membranes that were likely to have been produced from amphiphilic compounds on the prebiotic Earth. Laboratory simulations show that such vesicles readily encapsulate functional macromolecules, including nucleic acids and polymerases.
What is are the importance of knowing the similarities and differences of the prokaryotes and eukaryotes especially in the field of medicine or drug development?
It is important to know the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; allows us to control disease-causing bacteria without harming our own cells.
How are the similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells dependent on their size?
How are the similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells dependent on their size? Prokaryotic cells are smaller, therefore have a more favorable surface-area to volume ratio. ... Prokaryotes are therefore able to lack membrane-bound organelles and have less complex internal structure.
What characteristics do prokaryotes and eukaryotes share?
Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have structures in common. All cells have a plasma membrane, ribosomes, cytoplasm, and DNA. The plasma membrane, or cell membrane, is the phospholipid layer that surrounds the cell and protects it from the outside environment.
