During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O) from the air and soil. ... This transforms the water into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose. The plant then releases the oxygen back into the air, and stores energy within the glucose molecules.

How does photosynthesis work step by step?

It is convenient to divide the photosynthetic process in plants into four stages, each occurring in a defined area of the chloroplast: (1) absorption of light, (2) electron transport leading to the reduction of NADP⁺ to NADPH, (3) generation of ATP, and (4) conversion of CO₂ into carbohydrates (carbon fixation).

How does photosynthesis work scientifically?

photosynthesis, the process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in green plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.

What is photosynthesis easy explanation?

Photosynthesis is the process in which green plants use sunlight to make their own food. ... Green plants use this light energy to change water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and nutrients called sugars. The plants use some of the sugars and store the rest. The oxygen is released into the air.

How does photosynthesis occur?

Photosynthesis takes place inside plant cells in small objects called chloroplasts . Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll . This absorbs the light energy needed to make photosynthesis happen. ... Plants get carbon dioxide from the air through their leaves, and water from the ground through their roots.

Photosynthesis: Crash Course Biology #8

What are the 7 steps of photosynthesis?

• Step 1-Light Dependent. CO2 and H2O enter the leaf.
• Step 2- Light Dependent. Light hits the pigment in the membrane of a thylakoid, splitting the H2O into O2.
• Step 3- Light Dependent. ...
• Step 4-Light Dependent.
• Step 5-Light independent.
• Step 6-Light independent.
• calvin cycle.

What is the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis?

Green plants have the ability to make their own food. They do this through a process called photosynthesis, which uses a green pigment called chlorophyll. ... Chlorophyll's job in a plant is to absorb light—usually sunlight. The energy absorbed from light is transferred to two kinds of energy-storing molecules.

What is photosynthesis in your own words?

The definition of photosynthesis is the process through which plants use water and carbon dioxide to create their food, grow and release excess oxygen into the air. ... An example of photosynthesis is how plants convert sugar and energy from water, air and sunlight into energy to grow.

How does photosynthesis help plants grow?

Photosynthesis provides most of the oxygen that humans and animals breathe. ... Chlorophyll uses sunlight energy to transform the carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and carbon-based compounds such as glucose, a sugar that helps plants grow.

How does photosynthesis work in chloroplasts?

Chloroplasts absorb sunlight and use it in conjunction with water and carbon dioxide gas to produce food for the plant. Chloroplasts capture light energy from the sun to produce the free energy stored in ATP and NADPH through a process called photosynthesis.

What are the four things needed for the process of photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis requires sunlight, chlorophyll, water, and carbon dioxide gas as raw materials.

What are the 5 steps of photosynthesis?

• Step 1-Light Dependent. CO2 and H2O enter the leaf.
• Step 2- Light Dependent. Light hits the pigment in the membrane of a thylakoid, splitting the H2O into O2.
• Step 3- Light Dependent. The electrons move down to enzymes.
• Step 4-Light Dependent. ...
• Step 5-Light independent. ...
• Step 6-Light independent. ...
• calvin cycle.

What is photosynthesis explain with diagram?

Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy that can later be released to fuel the organisms' activities.

What are the 10 steps of photosynthesis?

• Step One (Light Reaction) Three ingredients are needed: water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide. ...
• Step Two (Light Reaction) ...
• Step Three (Light Reaction) ...
• Step Four (Light Reaction) ...
• Step Five (Light Reaction) ...
• Step Six (Light Reaction) ...
• Step Seven (Light Reaction) ...
• Step Eight (Dark Reaction)

How do you break down the word photosynthesis?

The word photosynthesis literally breaks down into "photo," Greek for "light," and "synthesis," a Greek word meaning "composition" or putting together. So, photosynthesis actually means to put together using light.

How do plants split CO2?

The carbon dioxide enters the leaves of the plant through small pores called stomata. ... The plant uses sunlight as energy to perform this chemical reaction. Photosynthesis separates carbon dioxide and water — known as CO2 and H2O, respectively — into their individual molecules and combines them into new products.

How do plants breathe?

Do Plants 'Breathe'? ... Plants do require oxygen for respiration which in return give out carbon dioxide. Unlike animals, plants do not have any specialized structures for gaseous exchange but they have stomata (present in leaves) and lenticels (present in stems) which are involved in the exchange of gases.

How do plants make food ks2?

Plants make their food using a process called photosynthesis, which means “putting together through light”. During photosynthesis, a plant traps energy from sunlight with its leaves. ... The plant uses the Sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into a sugary substance called glucose.

What is photosynthesis for 4th graders?

Photosynthesisis a process by which plants make their own food in their leaves and give off oxygen and water that they are not using.

What are the roles of chloroplast and chlorophyll in photosynthesis?

What are the roles of chloroplasts and chlorophyll in photosynthesis? Chloroplasts contain a light absorbing molecule called chlorophyll and this is the place in plants where photosynthesis takes place.

Why do plants reflect green light?

The longer answer lies in the details of photosynthesis, the electromagnetic spectrum, energy and “special pairs” of chlorophyll molecules in each plant cell. ... As such, plants look green because they absorb red light most efficiently and the green light is reflected.

Why are light and chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis?

Why are light and chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis? Light provides the energy needed to produce high-energy sugars. Chlorophyll absorbs light, and the energy of that absorbed light makes photosynthesis work.

What are the 2 pathways of photosynthesis?

The two stages of photosynthesis: Photosynthesis takes place in two stages: light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle (light-independent reactions). Light-dependent reactions, which take place in the thylakoid membrane, use light energy to make ATP and NADPH.
