Athetosis is a symptom primarily caused by the marbling, or degeneration of the basal ganglia. This degeneration is most commonly caused by complications at birth or by Huntington's disease, in addition to rare cases in which the damage may also arise later in life due to stroke or trauma.

Which area of brain is involved in athetosis?

The most common cause of athetosis is an injury to the basal ganglia, which is the part of the brain responsible for motor control.

What is the difference between athetosis and chorea?

Chorea is an ongoing random-appearing sequence of one or more discrete involuntary movements or movement fragments. Athetosis is a slow, continuous, involuntary writhing movement that prevents maintenance of a stable posture.

What causes Choreiform movements?

Chorea is an abnormal involuntary movement disorder, one of a group of neurological disorders called dyskinesias, which are caused by overactivity of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the areas of the brain that control movement.

Where do you see Athetosis?

With athetosis, the same regions of the body are repeatedly affected. These typically include the hands, arms, and feet. The neck, face, tongue, and trunk can be involved, too. While athetosis may be continuous, it can get worse with attempts to control movement.

What is the pathophysiology of hemiballismus?

Pathophysiology of hemiballismus is complex but thought to include decreased excitatory transmission of the GPi and the disinhibition of the thalamus, creating an overactivation of corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts.

What is athetosis?

Athetosis is a continuous stream of slow, flowing, writhing involuntary movements. It usually affects the hands and feet. Hemiballismus is a type of chorea, usually involving violent, involuntary flinging of one arm and/or one leg.

What is a Choreiform movement?

jerking or writhing movements, called choreiform movements, or what appear to be minor problems with coordination; these movements, which are absent during sleep, worsen over the next few years and progress to random, uncontrollable, and often violent twitchings and jerks.

How is Corea treated?

Doctors prescribe deutetrabenazine (Austedo®) or tetrabenazine (Xenazine®) to control muscle movements of Huntington's chorea. If chorea is part of a tardive dyskinesia syndrome, the medications valbenazine (Ingrezza®) and deutetrabenazine are usually considered.

What causes mouth puckering?

Tardive dyskinesia mainly causes random, involuntary movements of the face, tongue, lips, or jaw. These include: Lip smacking, puckering, or pursing.

What is Athetoid?

Dyskinetic CP (also called athetoid CP) is one type of cerebral palsy. Kids with dyskinetic CP have trouble controlling muscle movement. They have twisting, abrupt movements. Other types of cerebral palsy can lead to stiff muscles (spastic CP) or problems with balance and walking (ataxic CP).

What is the cause of Athetoid cerebral palsy in infants?

Athetoid cerebral palsy is one of several types of movement disorders caused by a brain injury. Each type of cerebral palsy differs based on which part of the brain is damaged. Athetoid cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the basal ganglia and/or the cerebellum.

What medication causes Athetoid movements?

Acute dystonic reactions most commonly occur in younger patients soon after taking to dopamine receptor blocking drugs, including antiemetics (e.g. metoclopramide or prochlorperazine) and antipsychotics.

What causes dystonia?

Some causes of acquired dystonia include birth injury (including hypoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain, and neonatal brain hemorrhage), certain infections, reactions to certain drugs, heavy metal or carbon monoxide poisoning, trauma, or stroke.

How is Hemiballismus diagnosed?

Diagnosis. Diagnosis of hemiballismus is clinical, based on the patient's abnormal movements. These must be distinguished from other hyperkinetic movement disorders such as tremor, akathisia, and athetosis. All of these conditions involve less violent movements that use lower amplitude.

What is the difference between myoclonus and chorea?

Myoclonus and chorea are hyperkinetic movement disorders that confer a jerky appearance. Myoclonus involves a quick and simple jerk, whereas the jerking in chorea combines with other, slower movements in a continuous, flowing fashion.

What causes Sydenham chorea?

Sydenham chorea (SC) is a neurological disorder of childhood resulting from infection via Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS), the bacterium that causes rheumatic fever. SC is characterized by rapid, irregular, and aimless involuntary movements of the arms and legs, trunk, and facial muscles.

What causes St Vitus dance?

Vitus, the patron saint of entertainers. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes Sydenham chorea as a central nervous system disorder characterized by jerking movements mostly of the face, arms, legs and hands. It's caused by infection by the same bacteria that cause rheumatic fever.

What are Parkinson's movements called?

Dyskinesia (involuntary movements) is muscle movements that people with Parkinson's can't control. They can include twitches, jerks, twisting or writhing movements. Dyskinesia can affect various parts of the body such as the arms, legs and torso.

What is the illness dystonia?

Dystonia is the name for uncontrolled and sometimes painful muscle movements (spasms). It's usually a lifelong problem, but treatment can help relieve the symptoms.

How is Hemiballismus treatment?

Hemiballismus is usually treated with antipsychotics, such as haloperidol and clozapine, but thalamic ablation is considered in severe cases if there is no response to medical therapies.

Where are the basal ganglia?

The term basal ganglia in the strictest sense refers to nuclei embedded deep in the brain hemispheres (striatum or caudate-putamen and globus pallidus), whereas related nuclei consist of structures located in the diencephalon (subthalamic nucleus), mesencephalon (substantia nigra), and pons (pedunculopontine nucleus).

What is the globus pallidus?

The globus pallidus (GP) is one of the components of basal ganglia. ... The globus pallidus and putamen collectively form the lentiform (lenticular) nucleus, which lies beneath the insula. The globus pallidus, caudate, and putamen form corpus striatum. The corpus striatum is also an important part of basal ganglia.
