planula, plural planulae, free-swimming or crawling larval type common in many species of the phylum Cnidaria (e.g., jellyfish, corals, and sea anemones). The planula body is more or less cylindrical or egg-shaped and bears numerous cilia (tiny hairlike projections), which are used for locomotion.

How do most cnidarians move?

How do cnidarians move? Since Cnidarians do not have a mesoderm, they do not have any true muscle. They move by epithelial muscular cells (cells in the epidermis that can contract and are made up myosin and actin.

How do medusae move?

The medusa is a free-swimming form; it moves by rhythmic muscular contractions of the bell, providing a slow propulsive action against the water. The other principal body type of the adult cnidarian is the polyp, a stalked, sessile (attached) form.

What is the difference between planula and Amphiblastula?

Planula is the ciliated, bilaterally symmetrical, flattened, free swimming larva of organisms in the phylum Cnidaria. ... Amphiblastula is the free swimming larva of certain sponges.

What is planula stage?

The planula is the first larval stage of Aurelia, and is formed soon after the egg and sperm combine to form a zygote. The planula is lined with cilia and eventually settles, forming a scyphistoma. Planula larval stages are common to many Cnidarians.

PLATE TECTONICS

What is a planula and how does it start the process of a reef forming?

Fertilization of an egg within the body of a coral polyp is achieved from sperm that is released through the mouth of another polyp. The sperm and egg merge and form a planula larva, which matures inside the body of its mother. When the larva is ready, it gets spit out into the water through the mouth of its mother.

What causes a planula larvae to settle?

Bacterial biofilms also produce cues for the settlement process that can be recognised by planulae [29–32], as previously reported for various marine invertebrates [33–34]. ... It is however possible that specific types of bacteria may be responsible for facilitating settlement and metamorphosis [36–38].

Do all invertebrates have planula larva?

Many invertebrates (e.g., cnidarians) have a simple ciliated larva called a planula. Flukes have several larval stages, and annelids, mollusks, and crustaceans have various larval forms.

How do sponge larvae move?

Sponges use the flagella to move when they are larvae. The flagella and collar work together to gather food.

How do you say planula?

noun, plural plan·u·lae [plan-yuh-lee].

How does the polyp switch to the medusa stage?

Cnidarians switch from the polyp to the medusa stage by a form of asexual reproduction in which the polyp develops a stack of medusoid structures that can then bud off to become independent medusae. ... The polyp stage can be regenerated when medusae reproduce sexually to form a ciliated larva called a planula.

Are medusae sessile?

Polyp is a sessile life cycle stage of the Cnidaria phylum. Medusa is a mobile life cycle stage of the Cnidaria phylum, contracting with it muscular bell.

Can we eat jellyfish?

You can eat jellyfish in many ways, including shredded or sliced thinly and tossed with sugar, soy sauce, oil, and vinegar for a salad. It can also be cut into noodles, boiled, and served mixed with vegetables or meat. Prepared jellyfish has a delicate flavor and surprisingly crunchy texture.

Are Cnidaria motile?

Medusa forms are motile, with the mouth and tentacles hanging down from an umbrella-shaped bell. Cnidarian morphology: Cnidarians have two distinct body plans, the medusa (a) and the polyp (b). ... The larva is free swimming for a while, but eventually attaches and a new colonial reproductive polyp is formed.

What is the function of a cnidarians tentacles?

All Cnidarians have tentacles with stinging cells in their tips which are used to capture and subdue prey. In fact, the phylum name "Cnidarian" literally means "stinging creature." The stinging cells are called cnidocytes and contain a structure called a nematocyst. The nematocyst is a coiled thread-like stinger.

What is the common adaptation of cnidarians?

What is the common adaptation , which unites them into the common group of Cnidaria? Their ability to sting their prey. What language was the word Cnidaria derived from and what does the word mean? The language the word Cnidaria derived from is Greek and it means stinging nettle.

How does a porifera move?

People often think of sponges as plants, rather than being animals. This misconception is due to some of the characteristics of the Porifera (Dawkins 2004). Like plants they do not move, i.e., they are sessile. They stay put in one place stuck to the bottom of the water- either salt or fresh.

Why do sponges not move?

Because sponges are sessile, meaning they cannot move, they filter water to obtain their food. They are, therefore, known as filter feeders. Filter feeders must filter the water to separate out the organisms and nutrients they want to eat from those they do not.

Why is the movement of water key to a sponge's survival?

Why is the flow of water through the canal system vital to the survival of the sponge? Since sponges are sessile, they are attached to the bottom and cannot pursue their food. Therefore, they depend upon the water drawn through these tiny pores and canals for obtaining food and oxygen and eliminating wastes.

Do larvae move?

Animals in the larval stage will consume food to fuel their transition into the adult form. In some organisms like polychaetes and barnacles, adults are immobile but their larvae are mobile, and use their mobile larval form to distribute themselves. Some larvae are dependent on adults to feed them.

What does a larvae turn into?

The larva thus not only serves for dispersal but also feeds and grows before it transforms into an adult worm. ... In insects the larva differs from the adult by the absence of wings but, in addition, may have a different mode of life and different way of feeding.

Do larvae have legs?

Caterpillars have proleg pairs on five or fewer abdominal segments and three pairs of true legs. Beetle larvae such as those of leaf beetles have no prolegs, but they do have true legs. Fly larvae lack true legs, as illustrated here by a predatory syrphid.

What is the function of planula larva?

Planula, plural planulae, free-swimming or crawling larval type common in many species of the phylum Cnidaria (e.g., jellyfish, corals, and sea anemones). The planula body is more or less cylindrical or egg-shaped and bears numerous cilia (tiny hairlike projections), which are used for locomotion.

How do coral larvae settle?

One hypothesis proposes that coral larval settlement is induced by specific compounds (e.g. morphogens) produced by the algae^14,22,35,36, while other studies suggest that coral settlement is driven by cues from surface-associated microbial biofilms^28,29,30.

Is coral a reef?

A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals. Reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. ... They are most commonly found at shallow depths in tropical waters, but deep water and cold water coral reefs exist on smaller scales in other areas.
