Bascule bridges have spans that pivot upward utilizing gears, motors and counterweights. Unlike vertical lift bridges, when opened, there is no vertical obstacle to river traffic. ... The machinery for opening the bridge is located above the structure. The Burnside Bridge is a Strauss-type, double-leaf bascule bridge.

What supports a bascule bridge?

Bascule girders are typically connected to a system of steel framing, including floorbeams, stringers and cantilever brackets that support the bascule leaf deck.

What are the common features of a bascule bridge?

A type of movable bridge, a bascule bridge contains one or two spans, one end of which is free and swings upwards. A counterweight at the pivoting end of the span or spans balances the weight as the free end rises.

How do swing bridges open?

When a water vessel needs to pass the bridge, road traffic is stopped (usually by traffic signals and barriers), and then motors rotate the bridge horizontally about its pivot point.

How does an opening bridge work?

The answer was to make Tower Bridge a bascule bridge. ... Therefore, instead of chains pulling up the bascules from the towers, the hard work of opening and closing Tower Bridge is left to eight large cogs. These are about 1m in diameter, four on each side, which rotate to open and close the Bridge.

How Draw Bridges Work

How do hydraulic bridges work?

As the load causes the three hinged arch to spread out, the end of the members house a hydraulic piston. ... As the hydraulic fluid is pushed under pressure, the fluid travels through pipes eventually leading to a vertical shaft leading to the mid-span of the bridge.

How are bridges lifted?

Vertical lift bridges use a system of counterweights and cables to move an interior lift span section that remains horizontal as it is raised up and down like an elevator, allowing river traffic to pass beneath the structure.

What is a swinging bridge called?

A simple suspension bridge (also rope bridge, swing bridge (in New Zealand), suspended bridge, hanging bridge and catenary bridge) is a primitive type of bridge in which the deck of the bridge lies on two parallel load-bearing cables that are anchored at either end.

What type of bridge is Bascule?

A bascule bridge is a kind of widely used moveable bridge whose main girders can be lifted together with deck about the hinge located at the end of the span. Depending on the bridge width, the bascule bridge can be designed as either single or double leafed.

What is the maximum length of a bascule bridge?

The new bascule bridge has a total length of 84 m, making it the largest single-leaf bascule bridge in Germany. The western approach bridge has a length of approx. 60 m, while the eastern approach is about 90 m long. The superstructure of the bridge consists of steel over a substructure of reinforced concrete.

When were bascule bridge invented?

Since then they were almost forgotten until Middle Ages when they again appeared in Europe. Leonardo da Vinci designed and built designed and built bascule bridges in 15th century. He also made designs and built models of swing and a retractable bridges.

How does a medieval drawbridge work?

Classical, medieval drawbridges worked via the simple principle of counterweight, with large wood and metal bridges pivoted via a series of balancing weights in a castle's gatehouse. ... By employing counterweights, incredibly heavy bridges could be operated by just a few people – useful when under attack.

Is Tower Bridge a bascule bridge?

Tower Bridge, movable bridge of the double-leaf bascule (drawbridge) type that spans the River Thames between the Greater London boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Southwark. It is a distinct landmark that aesthetically complements the Tower of London, which it adjoins.

What is the dead load of a bridge?

Dead load refers to the weight of the bridge itself. Like any other structure, a bridge has a tendency to collapse simply because of the gravitational forces acting on the materials of which the bridge is made.

What is a double swing bridge?

A “swing bridge” swivels allowing ships to pass and then swings back to allow automobile or train traffic to continue. “Double swing” bridges have two swinging or swiveling sections. ... Coleman Memorial Bridge running between Yorktown and Gloucester Point in Virginia, USA was built in 1952 and widened in 1995.

Are swing bridges safe?

Despite their tendency to swing alarmingly over swirling waters, swinging bridges are remarkably stable. Thanks to their flexibility, they can withstand forces that more rigid structures cannot unless supported by far greater mass.

How does a draw bridge know when to open?

Sound Signals

You can also signal the drawbridge by horn to request an opening with one prolonged blast (four to six seconds in duration) followed by one short blast (about one second). The bridge tender will reply with the same sound signal to acknowledge that the bridge can be opened immediately.

What bridge moves like an elevator?

Lift Bridge: The lift bridge (Fig. 18.14) consists of a truss bridge deck which can be moved up and down by cables.

What is the aim of hydraulic bridge?

Smooth and accurate acceleration and deceleration, positive locking in any conditions, driving end locks, safe and easy operations, and ability to carry varying loads are some advantages of the hydraulic bridge. Pascal's law is the principle behind hydraulic bridge working.

What is the purpose of hydraulic bridge?

The hydraulic bridge, is a type of movable bridge that can be raised with the help of a mechanical installation in order to allow maritime traffic through a body of water.

What are the principles of hydraulics?

The basic principle behind any hydraulic system is very simple - pressure applied anywhere to a body of fluid causes a force to be transmitted equally in all directions, with the force acting at right angles to any surface in contact with the fluid. This is known as Pascal's Law.
