The frontal lobe is the most anterior (front) part of the brain. It extends from the area behind the forehead back to the precentral gyrus. As a whole, the frontal lobe is responsible for higher cognitive functions such as memory, emotions, impulse control, problem solving, social interaction, and motor function.

What is the frontal lobe of the brain responsible for?

Each side of your brain contains four lobes. The frontal lobe is important for cognitive functions and control of voluntary movement or activity. The parietal lobe processes information about temperature, taste, touch and movement, while the occipital lobe is primarily responsible for vision.

What does damage to the frontal lobe cause?

Damage to the frontal lobe of the brain can cause a range of symptoms, including motor weakness and behavioral problems. A variety of conditions can damage the frontal lobe, including stroke, head trauma, and dementia.

What emotions are impacted by the frontal lobe?

The frontal lobe is the largest lobe of the brain. The frontal lobe plays a role in regulating emotions in interpersonal relationships and social situations. These include positive (happiness, gratitude, satisfaction) as well as negative (anger, jealousy, pain, sadness) emotions.

What areas are located in the frontal lobe of the brain?

The frontal lobe is involved in reasoning, motor control, emotion, and language. It contains the motor cortex, which is involved in planning and coordinating movement; the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for higher-level cognitive functioning; and Broca's area, which is essential for language production.

How do I activate my frontal lobe?

1. Games: Word games, memory games, and puzzles are effective ways to strengthen your prefrontal cortex. ...
2. Learning: Learning something new, like a language, instrument, or other skill, is even more effective than word games at enhancing your prefrontal cortex.

Can you live without your frontal lobe?

Activity in this lobe allows us to solve problems, reason, make judgments, make plans and choices, take action, and generally control your living environment. Without the frontal lobe, you could be considered a genius, however; you would be unable to use any of that intelligence.

How does stress affect the frontal lobe?

Basic research has found that high levels of catecholamine release during stress rapidly impair the top-down cognitive functions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), while strengthening the emotional and habitual responses of the amygdala and basal ganglia.

What makes up the frontal lobe?

The frontal lobe is covered by the frontal cortex. The frontal cortex includes the premotor cortex, and the primary motor cortex – parts of the motor cortex. The front part of the frontal cortex is covered by the prefrontal cortex.

What is one of the roles of the frontal lobes in memory?

Comparing objects: The frontal lobe helps categorize and classify objects, in addition to distinguishing one item from another. Forming memories: Virtually every brain region plays a role in memory, so the frontal lobe is not unique. However, research suggests it plays a key role in forming long-term memories.

What is the left frontal lobe responsible for?

The left frontal lobe is involved in controlling language related movement, whereas the right frontal lobe plays a role in non-verbal abilities. Some researchers emphasize that this rule is not absolute and that with many people, both lobes are involved in nearly all behavior.
