Penicillin, an antibiotic that inhibits cell-wall synthesis, would be most effective in log phase.

Which growth phase is the phase where antibiotics would be most effective?

The log phase is also the stage where bacteria are the most susceptible to the action of disinfectants and common antibiotics that affect protein, DNA, and cell-wall synthesis.

What happens during the lag phase?

During lag phase, bacteria adapt themselves to growth conditions. It is the period where the individual bacteria are maturing and not yet able to divide. During the lag phase of the bacterial growth cycle, synthesis of RNA, enzymes and other molecules occurs.

What are the 4 phases of bacterial growth?

Bacterial colonies progress through four phases of growth: the lag phase, the log phase, the stationary phase, and the death phase. The generation time, which varies among bacteria, is controlled by many environmental conditions and by the nature of the bacterial species.

What happens during the stationary phase of bacterial growth?

growth is followed by the stationary phase, in which the size of a population of bacteria remains constant, even though some cells continue to divide and others begin to die. ... During the stationary phase, the rate of bacterial cell growth is equal to the rate of bacterial cell death.

What causes antibiotic resistance? - Kevin Wu

During which phase of growth are bacteria most susceptible to antibiotics?

The log phase is also the stage where bacteria are the most susceptible to the action of disinfectants and common antibiotics that affect protein, DNA, and cell-wall synthesis.

During which phase does bacteria grow most rapidly?

Log Phase (logarithmic or exponential phase) - cell numbers increase exponentially; during each generation time, the number of cells in the population increases by a factor of two). The number of microbes in an exponentially increasing population increases slowly at first, then extremely rapidly.

What is the process of bacteria reproduction called?

Bacteria reproduce by binary fission. In this process the bacterium, which is a single cell, divides into two identical daughter cells. Binary fission begins when the DNA of the bacterium divides into two (replicates). ... Each daughter cell is a clone of the parent cell.

During which phase of the bacterial growth curve does the total number of viable live cells decline?

It is during the stationary phase that spore-forming bacteria have to induce or unmask the activity of dozens of genes that may be involved in sporulation process. 4. Death Phase. If incubation continues after the population reaches stationary phase, a death phase follows, in which the viable cell population declines.

Which growth phase occurs first after placing an inoculum into a nutrient broth?

3.1.1 The Lag Phase

The first phase observed under batch conditions is the lag phase in which the growth rate is essentially zero. When an inoculum is placed into fresh medium, growth begins after a period of time called the lag phase.

Why is the lag phase important?

In growth studies, the lag phase is the delay in growth when bacteria adapt to new environments. ... This 'tolerance by lag' allows bacteria to survive under high antibiotic concentrations, and may facilitate the subsequent evolution of antibiotic resistance.

What is meant by lag phase?

bacterial growth curve

This lag phase is the period when the bacteria are adjusting to the environment. Following the lag phase is the log phase, in which population grows in a logarithmic fashion. As the population grows, the bacteria consume available nutrients and produce waste products.

What causes a longer lag phase?

Microbial control and safety in inhalation devices

Temperature also has an impact on the duration of the lag phase of microorganisms as the metabolic rate of the cell determines the time required to adapt to new environmental conditions; the lower the temperature the longer the lag phase.

During which phase of growth is the highest rate of binary fission occurring?

The Log Phase

In the logarithmic (log) growth phase, sometimes called exponential growth phase, the cells are actively dividing by binary fission and their number increases exponentially.

Which of the following treatments is the most effective for controlling microbial growth?

Heat is a widely used and highly effective method for controlling microbial growth. Dry-heat sterilization protocols are used commonly in aseptic techniques in the laboratory. However, moist-heat sterilization is typically the more effective protocol because it penetrates cells better than dry heat does.

During which growth phase will bacterial growth appear to slow down?

Lag time is defined as the initial period in the life of a bacterial population when cells are adjusting to a new environment before starting exponential growth.

At which point in the growth curve is it ideal to extract viable bacteria cells?

Exponential or Log phase

Cells in the exponential phase of growth are the healthiest and most uniform, which explains why most experiments utilize cells from this phase.

What is Diauxic growth curve?

Diauxic growth or diauxie or Diphasic growth is any cell growth characterized by cellular growth in two phases, and can be illustrated with a diauxic growth curve. ... A diauxic growth curve refers to the growth curve generated by an organism which has two growth peaks.

In which of the following phase secondary metabolites are produced during growth?

In which of the following phase secondary metabolites are produced during growth? Explanation: During the stationary phase, there is complete utilization of the nutrients present in media and thus produce secondary metabolites which are then used in different industries.

What is the most common way bacteria reproduce?

Most bacteria rely on binary fission for propagation.

What are the 4 stages of the cell cycle?

In eukaryotes, the cell cycle consists of four discrete phases: G₁, S, G₂, and M. The S or synthesis phase is when DNA replication occurs, and the M or mitosis phase is when the cell actually divides. The other two phases — G₁ and G₂, the so-called gap phases — are less dramatic but equally important.

What happens during binary fission?

binary fission, asexual reproduction by a separation of the body into two new bodies. In the process of binary fission, an organism duplicates its genetic material, or deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and then divides into two parts (cytokinesis), with each new organism receiving one copy of DNA.

Why are bacteria becoming more resistant to antibiotics?

The more antibiotics are used, the more resistant the bacteria can become because sensitive bacteria are killed, but stronger germs resist the treatment and grow and multiply. Repeated and improper use of antibiotics contributes to this process.

How would this be a factor in bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics?

Bacteria develop resistance mechanisms by using instructions provided by their DNA. Often, resistance genes are found within plasmids, small pieces of DNA that carry genetic instructions from one germ to another. This means that some bacteria can share their DNA and make other germs become resistant.
