A molar pregnancy — also known as hydatidiform mole — is a rare complication of pregnancy characterized by the abnormal growth of trophoblasts, the cells that normally develop into the placenta. There are two types of molar pregnancy, complete molar pregnancy and partial molar pregnancy.

What are the complications of hydatidiform mole pregnancy?

A hydatidiform mole is growth of an abnormal fertilized egg or an overgrowth of tissue from the placenta. Women appear to be pregnant, but the uterus enlarges much more rapidly than in a normal pregnancy. Most women have severe nausea and vomiting, vaginal bleeding, and very high blood pressure.

When does hydatidiform mole occur?

Hydatidiform mole is a disease of pregnancy and therefore a disease of women. Hydatidiform mole is more common at the extremes of reproductive age. Women in their early teenage or perimenopausal years are most at risk. Women older than 35 years have a 2-fold increase in risk.

Can a baby survive a molar pregnancy?

A molar pregnancy can be either complete or partial. In a complete molar pregnancy, the fetus does not develop at all. It usually occurs when an egg that does not contain any genetic information is fertilised by a sperm. In a partial molar pregnancy, a fetus can develop but it will be abnormal and cannot survive.

What are the signs symptoms of hydatidiform mole in a pregnancy at 10 weeks gestation?

Most women have severe nausea and vomiting, vaginal bleeding, and very high blood pressure. Ultrasonography, blood tests to measure human chorionic gonadotropin (which is produced early during pregnancy), and a biopsy are done.

How can I remove hydatidiform mole?

Ultrasonography, blood tests to measure human chorionic gonadotropin (which is produced early during pregnancy), and a biopsy are done. Moles are removed using dilation and curettage (D and C) with suction. If the disorder persists, chemotherapy is needed.

Why bleeding occurs in hydatidiform mole?

One sign of persistent GTN is a high level of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) — a pregnancy hormone — after the molar pregnancy has been removed. In some cases, an invasive hydatidiform mole penetrates deep into the middle layer of the uterine wall, which causes vaginal bleeding.

Can bad sperm cause molar pregnancy?

A molar pregnancy occurs when the fertilisation of the egg by the sperm goes wrong and leads to the growth of abnormal cells or clusters of water filled sacs inside the womb. These tumours are rare.

Why do molar pregnancies happen?

What causes a molar pregnancy? Molar pregnancies result when specific genetic errors occur during the fertilization of an egg by a sperm. In a healthy pregnancy, a placenta forms to nourish the growing embryo. With a molar pregnancy, instead of a placenta, a tumor forms inside the uterus.

How do they remove a molar pregnancy?

To prevent complications, the abnormal placental tissue must be removed. Treatment usually consists of one or more of the following steps: Dilation and curettage (D&C). To treat a molar pregnancy, your doctor will remove the molar tissue from your uterus with a procedure called dilation and curettage ( D&C ).

What happens if you get pregnant right after a molar pregnancy?

Yes, you have every chance of getting pregnant again and having a healthy baby. The risk of having another molar pregnancy is small (about 1 in 80). It's best not to try getting pregnant again until all your follow-up treatment has finished. For most women, this will take about 6 months.

How does hydatidiform mole cause preeclampsia?

Objective. Molar pregnancy is associated with very early-onset preeclampsia. Since excessive circulating anti-angiogenic factors may play a pathogenic role in preeclampsia, we hypothesized that molar placentas produce more anti-angiogenic proteins than normal placentas.

What is GTD in pregnancy?

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a group of rare diseases in which abnormal trophoblast cells grow inside the uterus after conception. In gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), a tumor develops inside the uterus from tissue that forms after conception (the joining of sperm and egg).

Which of the following symptoms occurs with hydatidiform mole?

Symptoms of a molar pregnancy may include: Abnormal growth of the uterus, either bigger or smaller than usual. Severe nausea and vomiting. Vaginal bleeding during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

What happens if molar pregnancy is not treated?

If a molar pregnancy is not treated or does not miscarry completely it can progress and cause a range of serious conditions (known as gestational trophoblastic neoplasia), including: persistent GTD – persistent growth of the abnormal placental tissue. invasive mole – the tumour spreads into the wall of the uterus.

How long do you bleed after molar pregnancy?

You will have some bleeding for up to 2 weeks and it might be heavy and red at first. Let your doctor or specialist nurse know if the bleeding doesn't ease off or if it gets heavier. For 2 weeks after the operation you should avoid: having sex.

Is molar pregnancy genetic?

Symptoms and Causes

A partial molar pregnancy is a genetic accident. In a normal pregnancy, the egg receives one set of 23 chromosomes from the father and one set of 23 chromosomes from the mother, for a total of 46 chromosomes.

What causes an empty egg?

A blighted ovum, also called an anembryonic pregnancy, occurs when an early embryo never develops or stops developing, is resorbed and leaves an empty gestational sac. The reason this occurs is often unknown, but it may be due to chromosomal abnormalities in the fertilized egg.

Has anyone had a molar pregnancy?

The answer was yes, it was a pregnancy – but there was no baby, just a mass of ugly cells. Molar pregnancies, as they are called, are rare, affecting around 1,500 women in the UK each year.

How do you get a chemical pregnancy?

A chemical pregnancy is a very early pregnancy loss that happens when an egg is fertilized and implants in the uterus, but is unable to grow normally. It usually occurs at around week 4 to 5 of your menstrual cycle.

What are the two types of molar pregnancy?

• Complete molar pregnancy. In this condition, there's no embryo or placental tissue. ...
• Partial molar pregnancy. In this condition, there's an embryo and maybe some placental tissue.

What does molar pregnancy look like on ultrasound?

A pelvis ultrasound of a molar pregnancy will typically show a grape-like cluster of blood vessels and tissue. Your doctor may also recommend other imaging — like MRI and CT scans — to confirm the diagnosis. High levels of hCG in the blood might also be a sign of a molar pregnancy.

Can you have a placenta without baby?

A blighted ovum is a pregnancy where a sac and placenta grow, but a baby does not. It is also called an 'anembryonic pregnancy' as there is no embryo (developing baby). Because a blighted ovum still makes hormones, it can show up as a positive pregnancy test.

Which hormones are elevated in a client with hydatidiform mole?

Women with a hydatidiform mole usually have higher-than-average levels of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) compared with women with a normal pregnancy. This hormone is produced by the trophoblastic tissue.

What is the missed abortion?

A missed abortion is a nonviable intrauterine pregnancy that has been retained within the uterus without spontaneous abortion. Typically, no symptoms exist besides amenorrhea, and the patient finds out that the pregnancy stopped developing earlier when a fetal heartbeat is not observed or heard at the appropriate time.
