Which hepatitis is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma?
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of liver cancer; most cases of HCC (approximately 80%) are associated with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections.
Can hepatitis A lead to liver cancer?
Other viruses, such as the hepatitis A virus and hepatitis E virus, can also cause hepatitis. But people infected with these viruses do not develop chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis, and do not have an increased risk of liver cancer.
What is the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma?
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs most often in people with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection.
Is hepatitis A associated with cancer?
Hepatitis, a condition in which the liver is inflamed, impairs liver function. Viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis. Viral hepatitis is recognized as the usual cause of liver cancer.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the major form of liver cancer. Risk factors for HCC include chronic HBV (hepatitis B virus) and HCV (hepatitis C virus) infections, autoimmune hepatitis, chronic alcohol use, obesity and diabetes mellitus etc [2].
What cancer is associated with hepatitis B?
People who are infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C (HCV) virus may develop a chronic infection that can lead to cirrhosis. The damage that results increases the risk of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).
How does hepatitis B cause hepatocellular carcinoma?
HBV likely causes HCC via both indirect (necro-inflammation and regeneration injury) and direct (by integration of its DNA in the host genome) pathways. During recent years it has become evident that HBV viral load >2000 IU/mL is associated with a high risk of malignant transformation.
Is hepatitis related to the liver?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Alcohol consumption, several health conditions, and some medications can all cause this condition. However, viral infections are the most common cause of hepatitis.
What is the life expectancy of a person with hepatocellular carcinoma?
Unfortunately, HCC is typically diagnosed late in its course, with a median survival following diagnosis of approximately 6 to 20 months. In the United States, 2 years survival is less than 50% and 5-year survival is only 10%.
How does hepatitis affect the liver?
Hepatitis C causes damage to the liver mainly in the form of inflammation, which then leads to scarring or fibrosis. Hepatitis C results in the death of liver cells. It is uncertain whether the virus kills the cells or if it is the immune system's response to invasion by the virus.
Does hepatitis A cause liver damage?
In rare cases, hepatitis A can cause liver failure and even death; this is more common in older people and in people with other serious health issues, such as chronic liver disease.
Does hepatitis cause liver lesions?
Symptoms and Causes
Researchers aren't sure why some lesions develop. Possible causes include: Scarring (cirrhosis) from chronic liver disease, which occurs with hepatitis B, hepatitis C and heavy drinking.
What is hepatitis pathophysiology?
Viruses enter the blood stream and spread to the liver. They infect the hepatocytes and multiply. They change the antigen structure on the virus site. The body begins to use self-mediated immune response attempting to damage the hepatocytes. In Hep B and C, they can continue this process over and over for years.
Where does hepatocellular carcinoma spread to?
The most common sites of metastasis in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma are the lung (44%), portal vein (35%), and portal lymph nodes (27%). Also, intra-abdominal lymph nodes and bones are common sites.
Is hepatocellular carcinoma an adenocarcinoma?
A type of adenocarcinoma and the most common type of liver tumor.
What is the most common cause of hepatitis?
Hepatitis viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis in the world but other infections, toxic substances (e.g. alcohol, certain drugs), and autoimmune diseases can also cause hepatitis. There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E.

- Hepatitis C. This particular form of hepatitis is one of the most common bloodborne viral infections in the United States.
What diseases causes hepatitis?
Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, and certain medical conditions can cause hepatitis. However, hepatitis is often caused by a virus. In the United States, the most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
What are the chances of surviving hepatitis B?
The estimated 5-year survival rates were 97% for patients with chronic persistent hepatitis, 86% for those with chronic active hepatitis, and 55% for those with chronic active hepatitis with cirrhosis. The usual cause of death was liver failure and its sequelae.
What is the life expectancy of someone with hepatitis B?
The estimated carrier life expectancy is 71.8 years, as compared to 76.2 years among noncarriers (Figure 5). These results are consistent with other estimates, which indicate that 15% to 40% of HBV carriers die of liver complications.
Is Hep B carcinogenic?
Epidemiological studies have established that persistent HBV infection is a major risk factor for the development of hepatocel- lular carcinoma (HCC) and HBV is now thought to be one of the most important environmental carcinogens for humans [1, 2].
How does hepatitis B turn into cancer?
(The body's immune system does not wage war against the virus.) The hepatitis B virus is able to multiply and flourish in the body without causing the hepatitis (liver inflammation caused by the immune system) that leads to cirrhosis. However, the virus can damage the DNA in the liver cells and cause liver cancer.
