Diorite may contain small amounts of quartz, microcline, and olivine. Zircon, apatite, titanite, magnetite, ilmenite, and sulfides occur as accessory minerals. Minor amounts of muscovite may also be present. Varieties deficient in hornblende and other dark minerals are called leucodiorite.

What minerals does diorite contain?

diorite, medium- to coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock that commonly is composed of about two-thirds plagioclase feldspar and one-third dark-coloured minerals, such as hornblende or biotite.

What crystals are in diorite?

Composition of Diorite:

It has hornblende, biotite, and pyroxene minerals as minor content. Diorite has traces of other minerals found in other igneous rocks. The presence of quartz and feldspar gives it a contrasting black & white appearance. If it has too much quartz content, it becomes quartz diorite.

Does dolerite contain quartz?

Dolerite. Fine grained, ophitic texture. Primary minerals - plagioclase, pyroxene, hornblende and quartz.

Does diorite have Crystal?

Diorite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock. It contains large interlocking, randomly oriented crystals. ... It usually occurs as quite small intrusions often associated with larger intrusions like granite. Slow cooling produces the large crystals.

Geology: Granite, Granodiorite and Diorite.

Is diorite igneous rock a mineral?

Diorite (/ˈdaɪ. əˌraɪt/ DY-ə-ryte) is an intrusive igneous rock composed principally of the silicate minerals plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite, hornblende, and/or pyroxene.

Where can you find diorite rocks?

Diorite is an intrusive rock intermediate in composition between gabbro and granite. It is produced in volcanic arcs, and in mountain building where it can occur in large volumes as batholiths in the roots of mountains (e.g. Scotland, Norway).

Is dolerite a basalt rock?

əˌbeɪs/), also called dolerite (/ˈdɒl. əˌraɪt/) or microgabbro, is a mafic, holocrystalline, subvolcanic rock equivalent to volcanic basalt or plutonic gabbro.

What type of rock is granodiorite?

Granite and granodiorite are intrusive igneous rocks that slowly cool deep underground in magma chambers called plutons.

What type of rock is obsidian?

Rondi: Everyone, meet Obsidian , an igneous rock that from melted rock, or magma. Obsidian is an "extrusive” rock, which means it is made from magma that erupted out of a volcano. If it was an igneous rock that formed from magma underground and did not erupt, it would have been called an "intrusive" rock.

Is diorite a mafic rock?

Diorite is a plutonic igneous rock with intermediate composition between mafic and felsic rocks. ... Plagioclase usually dominates over hornblende and other mafic minerals. It frequently contains smaller amounts of pyroxene (usually augite but also orthopyroxene), biotite, quartz, olivine, and magnetite.

Is diorite used for countertops?

Polished versions of the stone are commonly used as kitchen countertops, making it a cost-effective alternative to marble. Diorite is also a type of igneous rock and is similar in composition to granite and basalt although not identical.

Is diorite a hard rock?

Diorite is an extremely hard rock, making it difficult to carve and work with. It is so hard that ancient civilizations (such as Ancient Egypt) used diorite balls to work granite. Its hardness, however, also allows it to be worked finely and take a high polish, and to provide a durable finished work.

What is the silica content of diorite?

Compilations of many rock analyses show that rhyolite and granite are felsic, with an average silica content of about 72 percent; syenite, diorite, and monzonite are intermediate, with an average silica content of 59 percent; gabbro and basalt are mafic, with an average silica content of 48 percent; and peridotite is ...

What metamorphic rock is formed from diorite?

Diorite - Medium-grained hornblende diorite metamorphosed in part to amphibolite and hornblende gneiss. Diorite and gabbro - Complex of diorite and gabbro, subordinate metavolcanic rocks and intrusive granite and granodiorite.

What is obsidian rock made of?

obsidian, igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (about 65 to 80 percent), is low in water, and has a chemical composition similar to rhyolite. Obsidian has a glassy lustre and is slightly harder than window glass.

Is Galena a mineral or a rock?

Galena, a sulphide mineral, contains up to 86% lead, and may contain up to 1% silver. The large volume of galena that is processed for lead produces enough silver as a by-product to also make galena the leading ore of silver.

Does granodiorite have crystals?

Granodiorite is an attractive, coarse-grained rock. The crystals making up the mass of the rock can easily be seen with the naked eye. The main minerals in granodiorite are feldspar, quartz, hornblende, augite and mica. There are two main color varieties of granodiorite.

What is the difference between diorite and granodiorite?

is that granodiorite is (rock) an intrusive igneous rock similar to granite, but containing more plagioclase than potassium feldspar while diorite is (rock) a grey intrusive igneous rock composed mostly of plagioclase feldspar, biotite, hornblende and/or pyroxene.

What type of rock is pumice?

Pumice is pyroclastic igneous rock that was almost completely liquid at the moment of effusion and was so rapidly cooled that there was no time for it to crystallize. When it solidified, the vapours dissolved in it were suddenly released, the whole mass swelling up into a froth that immediately consolidated.

Is dolerite a greenstone?

The majority of greenstone used for hand axes is a medium- to coarse-grained basic intrusive rock (generally dolerite or sometimes gabbro) that may often have undergone low-grade metamorphism with the development of various secondary minerals.

What type of rock is granite?

Granite is an igneous rock that forms when magma cools relatively slowly underground. It is usually composed primarily of the minerals quartz, feldspar, and mica. When granite is subjected to intense heat and pressure, it changes into a metamorphic rock called gneiss.

Where is granite found?

Granite is found mainly in Texas, Massachusetts, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Georgia, as these are the top producers of granite in the U.S., accounting for 64 percent of the country's production. In 2016, natural stone was produced at 276 quarries within 34 states.

Where is diorite mined?

Diorite, being a relatively rare mineral, is only commercially mined in small pockets of areas where its deposits occur, such as the United Kingdom and some other European countries, New Zealand, and a few sub-Saharan African, South American, and North American countries.

Is diorite a type of granite?

In the dimension stone industry, diorite is sold as a "granite." The dimension stone industry uses the name "granite" for any rock with visible, interlocking grains of feldspar. This simplifies discussions with customers who do not know how to identify igneous and metamorphic rocks.
