The use of a filter needle is required when drawing up medication or solution from a glass ampule. This allows any glass particles to be filtered out of the solution before using that solution in a patient or final product.

Are filter needles necessary?

Why do we need to use a Filter Needle? The ampoule is opened by breaking the neck. This process can cause a shower of miniscule glass shards that may fall undetected into the vial. ... A filter needle will reduce the chance of glass being introduced into a medication.

What type of needle do you use with an ampule?

Blunt filter needles or filter straws with a 5 micron filter should be available and used each and every time a medication is aspirated from a glass ampoule to reduce glass particle contamination Such action will promote patient safety and reduce the risk of patient harm.

What is a filter needle for?

Nursing textbooks and manufacturer inserts recommend the use of a filter needle when preparing certain powdered medications for IV or IM administration. ... Additionally, filter needles prevent the inadvertent administration of small glass fragments when drawing up medications from a glass ampule.

How many times can a filter needle be used?

Thus it is essential that filter needles be used only one time and used in only one direction. Using a filter needle to both withdraw and expel solution will cause any material trapped in the filter to be expelled into the final preparation.

What Are Filter Needles? A Solution For Broken Glass Particles In Ampoules.

What size filter needle should be used when withdrawing the contents of an ampule?

The ASHP 2008 guidelines involve the above USP 797 standard and the use of a 5-µm filter needle or straw when drawing medication from a glass ampule. The INS (2011) Standard 28.6 states: “a blunted filter needle or filter straw shall be used when drawing medication from glass ampules” (p. S34).

Why use a drawing up needle?

Are filter needles one way?

b) BD Blunt Filter Needle is a one-way filter only and should be removed once fluid is filtered into the syringe. ... Remember to aspirate into the syringe an amount of air equal to the volume in the vial to be removed. Inject air into the vial prior to medication removal.

How does an ampule not spill?

Assuming there is very little air inside the ampoule, if the area of the opening is A and the mass of the liquid is m, the liquid doesn't flow out as long as the pressure from the inside at the level of the opening is smaller than the air pressure: Pint=mg/A<patm.

What happens if you inject glass?

Injected glass particles can travel through the blood vessels to arrive at various organs, and cause inflammatory responses. They are known to cause blockages, embolism, tissue necrosis, and sepsis (Brewer and Dunning 1947; Shaw and Lyall 1985; Carbone-Traber and Shanks 1986; Preston and Hegadoren 2004).

Because the air cannot escape from inside the syringe, when you then try to push in the plunger, the air inside the plunger is compressed into a smaller volume. ... This higher pressure pushes outwards against the plunger, which is why it becomes much harder to push the plunger further into the syringe.

Why must a filter needle be used when withdrawing medication from an ampule?
